A short history of Blindness...

Blindness was formed in Brussels in the Summer of 1992 by five Spanish students. As they said at the time: "There are lots of bands with a wonderful musical knowledge and very little imagination, why not try the oppositte?".

After a few years of rehearsals and writing their first songs, two of the members, Jose and Santiago, recorded "Praga bajo el mar" ("Prague under the sea").It was a collection of songs conceptually centered around their trip to that city in 1993.It was performed without drums or bass and included 3 instrumentals. According to the authors it was "the first time we could capture our songs as they were in our heads".The highlights were "Sleep" and "Praga".

Together with new bass player Pablo (a heavy metal fan!), they recorded "Bloom", perhaps their darkest and hardest album.Together with old material from "Praga" (reinterpreted with the whole band), the new songs were faster and more guitar led. However many of its best moments are of a different sign: Bloom (a dark piano ballad), Lower things (a funky mid tempo),etc... Many lyrics dealt with partings and goodbyes, (two of the members and many of their friends were leaving Brussels, as they finished school), but without any nostalgia.

In September 96, Pablo, Sergio and Santiago got together in Brussels to record "Outside Nowhere Station" their first multitrack album.Jose sent them lyrics from Madrid and had his voice recorded from the phone for the title track, but the record suffered from his absence.Santiago's voice is here dark and theatrical and most songs feature echo and many other effects. It features, nevertheless, some of Blindness' best songs. Some of them are quite "traditional" ("All the days", "Radio Nowhere", "Time", "Joy"), but one of them was a beautiful pop song called " London Town", (written by Jose and Santiago), which opened a new way for Blindness. With its happy chorus and bluesy guitar, "London Town" was certainly the way forward.

In August 97, the band finally got to play together at last (which hadn't happenned since 95)and recorded "Bal de nuit". The new album soundded much happier and melodic, and Jose,Sergio and Santiago shared the singing. One of the main themes in the lyrics was to be the the price of fame, and everything that goes with it, but there were also songs about imagining music and falling in love with answer machines. Although some songs like "Montecarlo" or "Jazz" had a certain "retro" feel to them, others, like "Residential" or "Digital" (a jungle pop song) were much more modern. For Jose "this is really an evolutive record". For Santiago "each song in this album sounds as if it was performed by a different band, and I love that"

However, there wasn't enough Rock'n Roll in this for Pablo, who, after finishing the recordings announced his departure.

The rest of Blindness (Santiago A. Calvo,Jose M. Dominguez and Sergio B. Negrin) continue to work together although it is not known if the new material will be appended to "Bal de nuit" or will be a part of a new album.
