Irving Cracks the Whip in Picture Perfect Style
Westfield, MA - Mark Irving claimed an emotional victory this past Saturday at Whip City as he broke Justin Barger's eleven win, undefeated streak in the 250cc class.
Irving's Dunkin Donuts of Logan Airport #21 blasted through the pack from his 10th starting place to take the lead away from Billy White in the #13 New Boston Crane Machine on lap four. By the halfway point, it was Irving, multi time winner Justin Barger, Billy White, Tim Bertrand, and Glen Clark.
A few laps later, as Barger desperately tried every conceivable line to get around Irving, disaster struck on Barger's Cortlandt Auto Body #32 and he came to a halt at the end of the front straightaway. This set up a shootout to the end between Bertrand and Irving. Irving pulled away to a four-carlength lead on a lap fifteen restart, but a caution with two laps to go would tighten up the field. Bertrand would try to work the bottom of turn one with a lap to go, but just didn't have enough as Irving claimed his first win of the season. Bertrand in the NAPA Auto Parts #47 ended up second followed by Frank Palmietto in the Gateway Restaurants #28, Billy White, Glen Clark, Mark Colson, Doug Sherwood, and Bill Shultz.
In the 650cc class, a multi car pileup on lap one involving Matt Norrie, Jim Petrovic, and Dave York would halt the action for fifteen minutes at the start. Norrie and Petrovic were able to continue, even though Petrovic's wing was badly damaged. When racing resumed, Carl Sherman, who was running a brand new Honda powerplant, charged into the lead. Sherman, in the Better Built Equipment/Stallard #5, would go on to dominate the rest of the feature, winning his sixth of the season. Geoff Gernhart also posted a very impressive run in his Kenny Ives Racing/Bailey Chassis finishing second, followed by Petrovic, Steve Robinson, Bob Badura, Marc Green, Steve Dorazio, Bobby Farrington, and Charlie Lewandowski.
In the 750cc class, John Ogle in the J.C. Ogle Excavating #50 claimed the $500 dollar to win purse put up by Atlantic Coast Trailer Sales, and a free tire, put up by Kenny Ives Jr. Ogle blasted to the bottom of turns three and four on lap seven to take the lead away from Troy Slack. With other top runners such as Jeff Keller, Justin Barger and Rich Lemlin hot on his tail, Ogle could not afford to miss a beat. With two laps to go, Ogle worked under the bottom of heavy lap traffic as he separated himself from Keller by a few carlengths and went on to claim victory. Keller would have to settle for second, followed by Lemlin, Barger, Slack, Art Reid, Keri Townsend, and Greg Godek.
In the Dwarf Feature, Bob Charland in the #11 claimed another win, as he has proven to be the car to beat lately in this division. Charland took the lead away as he battled side by side with Steve Travinski for over four laps. By the time multi time winner Jonathan Holder had broken free of traffic, Charland had ran away and hid. Holder would have to settle for second, followed by Travinski, Tim Johnson, Ray Charland, and Sherman Bauman.
In the 1200cc class, Billy Guertin in the Aquatique Pools #12 claimed his second victory of the year. Guertin took the lead away from rookie Shawn Tryon in the #20 on a lap four restart and never looked back as he went unchallenged for the rest of the race. Tryon, who has been very fast lately went virtually unchallenged in second place for the rest of the race. The most exciting race of the night was the race for third. Kevin Weeks in the Smith Sled Shop #4 and Billy White in the Mark Bennet Racing #16 raced side by side for the last five laps, with Weeks grabbing third, followed by White, David Haskell, and Walt Black.
In the 750cc Sportsman class, it was none other than Josh Winchell in his Winchell Racing/Bailey Chassis taking down his eighth win of the year. Winchell grabbed the lead on lap two and had to battle heavy lap traffic for the majority of the event. Winchell's teammate, James Mossman, would finish second, followed by Tim Lynch, Tom Richard, and Dan Schaubert.
Taking down wins in the Karts this week were, Kyle Levreault in the
Novices, Daryl Moquin in the Turquoise, Eric Bacon in the Juniors, Daniel
Reid in the two strokes, Kelly Haskell in the Lites, Bob Byron in the mediums,
Bob Byron, again, in the heavies, and Keith Stanfield in the microstocks.

Barger Does It Again:
King of the Whip Thus Far
in 1999
Westfield, MA - Justin Barger in the King Motorsports/Cortlandt Auto Body machine was at it again this Saturday at Whip City as he notched his win total up to seventeen wins in 1999.
In the 250cc division, it looked as if Chris Telesca in the FTZ Racing/Hyper Chassis would challenge Barger for his first win, but on the 13th lap, Barger overtook Telesca, who would slow with problems a few laps later. Barger, who had numerous problems throughout the evening, switched engines in the intermission and went on to lap all the way up to the eighth place car in the feature. Billy White in the New Boston Crane/RTS Chassis ended up finishing a strong second, followed by Tim Bertrand in the NAPA Auto Parts of Tolland #47, Tom Taylor in the Assabet Tree Service #11, Mark Marrone in the Mr. Electric #42, Mark Irving, Frank Palmietto, Jeff Fisher, Dave DeBeaucort, and Bob Dance.
In the 750cc class, due to a bad week three weeks ago, Barger sat on the outside pole. Within a matter of five laps, he had stretched out his lead over the #90 Bailey Chassis of Jeff Keller. Barger would go on to lap over three-quarters of the field, as he won his third in a row in this class. Keller would finish a slim second over the #50 J.C. Ogle Excavating machine of John Ogle, Rich Lemlin, Art Reid, Chet Hinkle, Troy Slack, Mark Barsoleau, and Keri Townsend.
In the 650cc feature, Steve Robinson took over the lead early in the Lowbed Johnson #17. At the halfway point, it was Robinson, ELS regular Rich Wood Jr. in the Jay Mckinney #35 Factor One machine, multi feature winner Carl Sherman in the Better Built Equipment/Stallard Chassis #5, Doug Norrie in the #92, and Geoff Gernhart in the Kenny Ives Racing/Bailey chassis that had been badly wrecked the previous week. All of a sudden, two laps later, Wood slowed on the frontstretch and brought out the caution. On the same caution, Sherman would drop out with exactly the same engine problem as Wood, and two laps later Norrie would retire. Robinson would cruise to victory over Gernhart, Jeb Stearns, Bob Badura, Dave York, Bobby Farrington, Matt Norrie, and Wayne Campbell.
In the Dwarf Car feature, Bob Charland in the #11 claimed victory for the second week in a row. The victory didn't come easy though, as Charland had to battle with multi feature winner Jonathan Holder in the #2 and his brother, Ray Charland, in the truck body #6. With two laps to go, Charland and Holder approached heavy lap traffic. Charland looked as if he were going to take the high side going into turn one with Holder following, but instead darted to the bottom, leaving Holder three carlengths behind coming out of turn two. Charland would hold on for the victory followed by Holder, Ray Charland, Tim Johnson, Sherman Bauman, Thomas Chandler, and Chris Travinski.
In the 1200cc feature, it was business as usual for Ray Legary in the Great White Cleaning #7 as he claimed another victory in the division. Legary jumped into the lead on lap two, followed by Billy Guertin in the #12, Roland Huot in the McDonalds of Westfield #5M, and "Revin" Kevin Weeks in the Angelo's Fried Dough #4. As Legary opened up his lead, Huot and Guertin would race side by side for second for two laps. Legary took down the victory followed by Huot, Guertin, Weeks, Shawn Tryon, Pete Pascale, Dave Haskell, and Brian Kerk.
In the 750cc sportsman, Josh Winchell in the #70 took down another win.
Winchell has been the one to beat every week and it it was no different
this Saturday night. He stormed into the lead in his Bailey Chassis on
lap two and never looked back. His teammate, James Mossman who also drives
an
identical Bailey Chassis, put forth a very strong run, as he finished
second, followed by Tim Lynch, last week's winner Lance LaFernier, and
Tom Richards.
Taking down wins in the go karts this week were Chris Haskell in the Juniors, Neil Provost in the Lites, Kimberly Rivet in the Novices, Steve Doll in the Mediums, Nils Christianson in the Heavies, John Tonlino in the Microstocks, and Christopher Reid in the Turquoise division.

Barger Triumphs on Double Duty at the Whip
Westfield, MA - Nothing seems to stop Justin Barger and the Cortland
Auto Body team, as they have become one of the top winners in the Northeast
behind the likes of open wheel greats such as Kenny Tremont, Terry Schaeffer
and Fred Rahmer. Barger has strung together ten wins in a row in
the
250cc class and five wins in his 750cc machine, bringing him to a total
of fifteen wins.
In the 250cc feature, Chris Telesca in his Hyper Racing #27 jumped out to an early lead. Telesca's lead would be cut short though as tenth place starter Barger in his #32 King Chassis and the #42 of Mark Marrone stormed to the bottom of turns three and four. Marrone would lead briefly only to be overcome by Barger a lap later. At the halfway point, it was Barger, Tom Taylor in the #11 RTS Chassis, Tim Bertrand in the NAPA Auto Parts of Tolland machine, and Mark Irving in the Gordon Irving Trucking owned #21 machine.
Taylor would close the gap on Barger to less than three car lengths with two laps to go, but would run out of time as Barger continued his undefeated streak in the class. Taylor would have to settle for second in his best run yet, followed by Irving, Bertrand, Marrone, Telesca, Billy White, Jeff Fisher, Rich Crooker, and Tim Lane.
In the 750cc feature, pole sitter Barger in the #32 Interstate Lube
Products machine looked as if he would have to take the back seat to the
#90 Bailey Chassis of Jeff Keller. Keller drove a flawless race as he worked
through lap traffic, expanding his margin over Barger to more than ten
carlengths.
With two laps to go, Keller was stuck in heavy lap traffic, racing
three wide through the turns. Barger closed the gap to a car length with
a lap to go, and with the fans on their feet, Barger went into turn three
high and blasted to the bottom under Keller coming off the fourth turn
to take his second win in a row. Keller would have to take second, followed
by Billy Guertin, Rich Lemlin, Adam Clark, Keri Townsend, Troy Slack, and
Art Reid.
In the 650cc feature, Carl Sherman in the Better Built Equipment/Stallard
Chassis #5 and Geoff Gernhart in the Kenny Ives Jr. Racing #11 could have
been covered with a blanket for the second half of the feature. Sherman,
who had come from the back of the pack after making repairs, closed the
gap
on Gernhart with five laps to go. Then, a lap later tragedy struck
for Gernhart. His machine got slightly out of shape coming off the second
turn and caught the outside berm sending him on a wild flip down the backstretch
wall. Luckily the fifteen-year-old driver was able to walk away from the
flip with minor bruises, but with a heavily damaged machine. When racing
resumed, Sherman cruised to his sixth win in a season where he either wins
or has mechanical problems. David York in the #2 Tom Whitney Excavating
machine finished second, followed by Wayne Campbell, Jim Petrovic, Matt
Norrie, Jason Cherry, Peter Robinson, Bob Owen, and Marc Green.
In the Dwarf car feature, Steve Travinski jumped out to an early lead
only to be overtaken early by the #36 of Sherman Bauman. Bauman would take
command for a few laps, only to be overtaken by the #11 of Bob Charland
at the halfway point. The two would battle side by side for the next five
laps
until Charland pulled away, taking down the win. Bauman ended up second
followed by Tim Johnson, Steve Travinski, and Jonathan Holder.
The 750cc class elected to have a double points feature and extra laps
to make up for a timeout the previous week. The #12 of Lance LaFerniere
jumped out to an early lead, but was hotly pursued by the #70 of Josh Winchell
by lap five. The two would make contact coming off the second turn at the
halfway point, leaving Winchell's machine at a halt coming off the
second turn. LaFerniere, who just turned fifteen a short while ago, would
earn his first victory as he cruised to victory. Tim Lynch finished a strong
second in the #67 Lemlin Overhead Doors machine, followed by James Mossman,
Tom
Richards, and Kelly Haskell.
In the first 1200cc feature held over from last week, Billy Guertin
earned his first win of the year. Guertin took over the lead on lap six,
after Ray Legary broke, and took down the win over Kevin Weeks in the Smith's
Sled Shop #4, Brian Kerk, Roland Huot, David Haskell, Ed Ianitelli, and
Billy
D'Innocenzo.
In this week's 1200cc feature, Ray Legary in the Great White Cleaning
#7 struck early, taking the lead on lap two. A scary wreck involving Ken
Bonardi, Billy D'Innocenzo, and 750cc driver Keri Townsend halted the action
for fifteen minutes as track personnel tended to the drivers and their
machines. When racing resumed, Legary pulled away from the field as he
has done many times this season. Finishing a strong second in his best
run yet was Roland Huot in the McDonald's of Westfield #5M, Kevin Weeks,
Billy Guertin, and Billy White.
Taking down wins in the Karts this week were Roy Gauthier in the Lites,
Danny Reid in the two strokes, Roy Bacon Jr. in the Heavys, Kim Rivet in
the Novices, Eric Bacon in the Juniors, David Bodio in the Turquoise class,
and in the microstocks it was John Tonlino in the #03. Whip City Returns
to
regular action next week, but in the meantime go to www.whipcityspeedway.com

Not Even Bad Luck Could Stop Barger
Westfield, MA - Not even bad luck affects Justin Barger in his 250cc machine as he has strung together perhaps the most impressive win streak ever at Whip City Speedway.
In the 250cc feature, Rich Crooker in his Superior Water/RTS Chassis blasted to the front to take the lead on lap two. Crooker would lead until lap ten when a broken shifter would slow, but not completely take him out of the action and Mark Irving in the #21 Irving Excavating/Stallard Chassis inherited the lead.
Through this, Justin Barger in the #32 Cortlandt Auto Body machine had pitted on the eighth lap with what appeared to be a broken shifter. After making repairs, Barger resumed at the tail of the twenty-two car field and began his charge to the front. With six laps to go it was Irving, twentieth place starter Tim Bertrand in the Heritage Lawns/RTS Chassis, Chris Telesca, and Barger. Barger slipped past Telesca, after a restart, battled side by side with Bertrand for two laps, and then set his sights on Irving. He tried numerous times over the last two laps to get by, but coming off the fourth turn with the fans on their feet, the two made contact and Barger crossed the line on two wheels, winning by a half car length. Irving had to settle for second, followed by Bertrand, Billy White, Tom Taylor, Mark Marrone, Rich Crooker, Jeff Fisher, Chris Telesca, and Chuck Camosse.
In the 650cc race, Carl Sherman in the Better Built Equipment #5/Stallard
Chassis jumped out to an early lead, and absolutely dominated the majority
of the feature. It seems as if Sherman "sets the standard" when mechanical
woes do not put him on the sidelines. Tremendous racing took place for
the
second and third spot as David York, Wayne Campbell, Geoff Gernhart,
and Jim Petrovic all battled side by side for the entire race. York in
the Tom Whitney Excavating/Bailey Chassis took down second, followed by
Wayne Campbell in the Hyper Racing machine, Gernhart in the Ives Racing/Bailey
Chassis, Petrovic in the Doug's Auto/Stallard, Bob Badura, Doug Norrie,
Mark Green, and Bob Owen, after a terrible wreck in the heat race.
In the 750cc race, John Ogle in the J.C. Ogle Excavating #50 took down yet another feature win. Ogle has been fast and consistent this year, and has propelled himself to the top of the points rankings. Once Ogle charged to the outside of Art Reid on the backstretch, it was clear sailing ahead. Reid would have to settle for second, followed by a strong performance by Rich Lemlin in the Lemlin Overhead Doors #30, Billy Guertin, Jeff Keller, Keri Townsend, Chet Hinkle, Troy Slack, and Mike Pascale.
In the Dwarf Car feature it was none other than Mr. High Groove, Jonathan Holder in the Spectro Oils #2 taking down another win. For the majority of the feature, it was Steven Travinski and Robert Charland battling side by side, through lapped cars, swapping the lead over and over. While this action was going on, Holder and Tim Johnson had closed the gap to almost nothing. As the leaders approached a lapped car, Holder took the high groove and sailed to victory. Charland ended up second, followed by Travinski, Johnson, and Don Lewandowski.
In the 1200cc feature, Ray Legary in the Great White Cleaning #7 absolutely smoked the field, as he roared to yet another victory this year at Whip City. Legary charged into the lead on the second lap and never looked back. Shawn Tryon in the #20 had put forth an impressive run, until he contacted the wall and had to retire with four laps to go. Following Legary across the line was Kevin Weeks, Art Reid, Brian Kerk, Roland Huot, Billy White and David Haskell.
In the 750cc sportsman feature, Josh Winchell in his #70 Bailey Chassis took down another win as he dominated the sportsman feature. He took the lead away from the #12 of Lance LaFernier on lap four and never looked back. Winchell has absolutely dominated since the early portion of the season, as the car has been near perfect every week. LaFernier ended up second, followed by James Mossman, Tim Lynch, and Scott Keegan.
Taking down wins in the Karts were Ernie Whidden in the two strokes, Jason Wood in the Lites, Nils Christianson in the Heavies, Zoe Hastings in the Novice, and Christopher Reid in the turquoise division.
Next week at Whip City will be a special event: $500 to win in a 650cc/250cc
"Shootout." We'll see if multi time winner Justin Barger in the 250's can
bear the heat of hard charger Carl Sheman in the 650's.

White Conquers the Whip for Win Number One
Westfield, MA - The racing this past Saturday night was characterized by close calls and hot, side by side action at Bill Guertin and Frank Ferraras premier 1/4 mile clay oval.
In the 1200cc class, Billy White in the Mark Bennett Racing #16 jumped out to an early lead, and for the first half of the race went unchallenged. The action started to heat up though as the #4 of Kevin Weeks was hooked up and charging hard through the field. A restart with two laps to go put White at the point followed by Weeks and hard charging Ken Bonardi. White, once again, jumped into the lead, but coming off the fourth turn on the last lap, Weeks would take one last shot for the win. As he came off the fourth turn, Weeks lost control of his vehicle causing a potentially dangerous situation for the 1200 field. White powered to his first career mini-sprint victory followed by Ken Bonardi, Billy Guertin, Roland Huot, Shawn Tyron, David Haskell, Earl Cooms, Pete Pascale, and Kevin Weeks.
In the 250cc race, Jeff Fisher in the #26 Tims Auto machine jumped out
into the lead on lap one, only to be overtaken by the #71 of Rich Crooker
in the Superior Water/RTS Chassis on a lap 3 restart. Further back
in the pack, ninth place starter Tim Bertrand in the Heritage Lawns/RTS
Chassis and
sixth time winner Justin Barger in the #32 Cortlandt Auto Body/King
Chassis were on the move. As Crooker, Bertrand and Barger approached
a lapped car on lap eight, the car got out of shape and Barger would slip
by all three off the bottom of turn four. Even after a violent flip
in the heat race,
Bargers car continued to handle flawlessly as he cruised to his seventh
victory of the season. Bertrand ended up second followed by Crooker,
seventeenth place starter Mark Irving, Frank Palmietto, Billy White, Tom
Taylor, Mike Bosco, Mark Marrone, and Jeff Fisher.
In the 650cc race, Marc Green jumped out to an early lead followed by Geoff Gernhart and tenth place starter Steve Robinson. Gernhart would take the lead away from Green on lap six, only to be overpowered by Robinson one lap later as he drove to the outside of the youngster. Gernhart would try to retake the lead two laps later, but the two leaders would make contact in the middle of turns one and two and stop dead on the track. It appeared as if Robinson and Gernhart would have to go to the rear, but officials ruled that the caution had been brought out for the #44 of John Ianitelli, who had stopped on the backstretch moments earlier. On the restart, Robinson resumed the race at the point, but Gerhnart would have to go all the way to the rear because he stopped to make repairs. Robinson jumped out into the lead once again and would cruise comfortably to his first win of 1999. Gernhart made an impressive run from the rear to finish second, followed by Jim Petrovic, William Bosma, David York, Marc Green, Keith Fowler, and Charlie Lewandowski.
In the 750cc race, ELS regular John Lieto in the #67 Lemlin Overhead Doors machine cruised to his second win of the season in a limited number of starts. The win did not come easily though as it looked for a while as if Justin Barger in the #32 was well on his way to victory. Barger had moved from deep in the pack into the lead in no time, but mechanical woes struck once again and he was forced to the pits. Lieto would then have to battle with the #98 of Jeff Moulton, as a few laps later Moulton would retire also with mechanical problems. With a clear track in front of him, Lieto cruised to victory followed by teammate Rich Lemlin, Mark Barsoleau, Troy Slack, David Ayers, Jeff Keller, Chet Hinkle, and Keri Townsend.
In the Dwarf Car feature, Jonathan Holder came from deep in the pack to take down yet another win in the Spectro Oils #2. The only serious challenger that Holder would face would be DEs Eddie Towers in the #21. Towers looked low coming off of turn four as he slid his machine through the turn, but did not have the steam to overtake Holder. Towers would have to settle for second followed by Sherman Bauman, Tim Johnson, Robert Charland, Chris Travinski, Ray Charland, Thomas Chandler, and John Magee IV.
In the 750cc Sportsman feature, Josh Winchell took down another win, as he continues to dominate the sportsman field. Winchell took the lead on lap four after Greg Godek in the Racing With Jesus #99 was forced to retire. With Godek out, Winchell sailed to victory followed by Tim Lynch, Lance LaFreniere, who was disqualified for not passing through the tech area, Scott Keegan, and Tom Richard.
Go-Kart winners were as follows: Novice-David Bodio, Turquois-Chris Reid, Juniors-Eric Bacon, Lites-Roy Bacon III, 2-Stroke-Daniel Reid, and Heavy-Ryan Gemme.
Whip City returns to regular action this week, but in the meantime,
