CHRIS STAPLES WINS OPS
PRO STOCKS AGAIN
OXFORD, ME - Chris Staples showed why he's perhaps destined to be Maine's
next nationally recognized race car driver with his performance Saturday
night at Oxford Plains Speedway. The 18 year old Pro Stock racer got into
a great side-by-side duel with veteran Bruce Haley of Minot in his 12 lap
heat race before winning by a « car length margin. Then, with
the outside pole positron at his disposal, led the entire 35 lap race without
any serious challenges for the win; his second of the year and hirs second
of the month of July. He won on July 1 and again on July 31 with
several other strong finishes in the races in between. Pole starter, Al
Hammond suffered mechanical woes early into the event and dropped out of
the field early. Jerry Babb was the only driver who really could
run with Staples. Even though he tried both the low and high side
of the determined Staples he really could run with, but couldn't pass Staples.
Both cars were about even in speed and handling qualities. Saturday
night, Bruce Haley, did manage to make a two lap run at Staples before
Babb's arrival, but just
wasn't fast enough to maintain a consistent hope of getting his first
win in several years. Tim Brackett caught the front trio but wasn't
fast enough to run better that fourth with Danny Bubar rounding out the
top five
Dennis Spencer, Jr. did something in the Late Model Stock Car division's
30 lap main event. He won back to back features and a record setting
sixth of the year. Spencer appeared to be satisfied with a third
place run as the laps were down to only three to go when race leader Henry
Hudson III had
his transmission jump out of gear. That momentarily broke the
momentum of Hudson and Spencer slipped to the bottom groove and Hudson
was out of the top spot. The other big loser in that scenario was
Don Wentworth. He was on the outside of Hudson and when Hudson slipped
up the track, Wentworth had to back off the throttle even more and faded
to sixth. Point leader, Leon Heckbert, pitted during a lap one restart
and then drove from the 22nd spot to finish third. Frank Snow who
started at the rear twice then drove back to fourth with David Bersaw posting
his third straight top five which is a career best string of three consecutive
races.
Jerry Harrison got two big resume items in the Limited Sportsman division. He got another win with relative ease and with cousin Kenny Harnson dropping out of the 25 lap race with two laps to go with a flat tire he might have retaken the division point lead. When the official OPS point standings are released on Tuesday he just might be atop the list but if not then, he'll be within a very few markers of the other racing Harrison family members. Corey Sanborn moved around Chuck Estes with four laps to go to cement the runner-up spot and Estes had a seasons best effort at third. Steve Bennett, who won the last time out, came back to race fifth and rookie of the year point leader, Roy Lee Weymouth, finished fifth which takes him that much closer to capturing the Wal-Mart sponsored rookie title crown.
David Haseltine won again in the Strictly Stock division and retook the point lead when Shane Green dropped out before the half way mark with mechanical misfortunes. Haseltine got the lead from Cam Richards in the closing laps as the result of a restart and then won by a car length. Richards stayed second and Jeff Merrill scored his second straight third place finish. Larry Emerson was fourth again and rookie, Ben Alden, rounded out the top five.
George Brown, Jr. finally got his long awaited Mini Stock division first win. After several close misses this year and last, the driver of the Dodge Daytona quickly moved to the front of the field in the 20 finale and then held off the bid by Craig Dunn to upstart the determined Brown. Ralph Felker was third with Bill Thibeault and Butch Keene next in line.

SUMMER SERIES PRESENTED BY
TEXACO
Oxford, ME - Sally Gherardi of Gorham won her fifth straight Ladies division race of the Big Apple Summer Racing Series presented by TEXACO at Oxford Plains Speedway, but this time she had to do the hard way. Jessica Hutchinson led the first lap and then Tina Follette took command of the 20 lap race, but a caution flag on lap 17 helped Gherardi make up lots of track positron. The deciding moment, however, was when Follette got tangled up with a lapped car and spun out of the lead. Now Gherardi was the leader and Follette could only wish she'd taken a different line around the slow traffic. Jennifer Reed rounded out the top three.
Mini Cup Series driver Tom Gould has made the same mistake two weeks in a row. Get wide out of turn four and you loose the top spot and for the second straight week it was Tom Purington of Gorham who took advantage of the leaders lap eight mistake. This time Steve Daoust got the runner-up spot and Charlie Marks moved to thrid in the process.
Matt Chick of Winthrop made it a career first with the win in the 4 Cylinder Series. He took the lead on lap 10 and was never bettered over the second half of the 20 lap race. John Parent made his first start a good one with the runner-up finrsh. Wil Shurtleff picked up his trophy for the third place finish. Chick was also the lucky winner in the "Your lucky Driver Contest" as he and Karen Gurney of Windham won $25 each in TEXACO System 3 Gasoline for winning the luck of the draw positron contest.
Jeff Moon of Gray posted his fifth win of the year in the Oxford Outlaw division. He grabbed the lead on lap eight and won by a single car length over Randy Henderson. Moon started the race in the 20th positron. Point leader, Jason Ricker, maintained his slim point lead with a third place finish.

DENNIS SPENCER SCORES 5TH
OXFORD LMS WIN OF THE YEAR
OXFORD, ME - Dennis Spencer, Jr of Turner won his 10 lap qualifying race and then held off the challenges of Henry Hudson, III of Harrison for two restarts and 30 laps of racing to post his fifth Late Model Stock Car division win of the year Friday night at Oxford Plains Speedway. Joe Constantino of Auburn raced third for most of the night, second for a couple of laps and Ron Moon of Cumberland moved from deep in the 23 car field to run fourth. Don Wentworth of Bridgton rounded out the top five. Spencer later said in victory lane that although Hudson was ultra fast, he was able to maintain his lead because Hudson just couldn't run as fast in the middle of the race track as he could on the bottom.
"It was a case of being able to catch me, but not pass me. He raced me real clean and that's when it gets fun."
Steve Bennett of Buckfield took the lead on lap two from Andy Phippips,
Jr. of Phillips and then simply raced to a five car length win over Troy
Flaerty of Winthrop for his first win in several years. Flaherty
made it close a couple of times but just didn't have quite enough to overhaul
Bennett. Tom Ricker was fast, but could only manage to race his way
to third with Doug Poland of Livermore Falls and Jerry Harrison of Freeport
rounded out the top five in the 25 lap main event in the Limited Sportsman
division.
The most exciting race of the night was the Strictly Stock 20 lap main
event. After a see-saw battle for the lead between Mike St. Germain
of Auburn and Ben Alden of Greene, Vance Martin of Peru moved into the
top spot. Martin would eventually get disqualified because his frame
height was to low after the feature event but the last lap was the lap
that 3000 race fans will talk about for weeks and weeks to come.
With the white flag flying and Martin and Jeff Merrill running sirde by
side, Davird Haseltine
made the commitment to win the race by going three wide. Point
leader Shane Green of S. Paris decided to do likewise and they finished
one and two with Jeff Merrill being elevated to third on the Martin DQ.
Wayne Reynolds and Jon Brill rounded out the top five.
Mike Small of Mechanic Falls took the lead on lap 14 when then leader, George Brown, Jr., made the wrong choice of lanes to go around a lapped car and from that point on Small was easily enroute to his third Mini Stock win of the year. He lead the last six laps and Brown stayed in the number two spot. Butch Keene then finish third and fourth. Fifth would go to Ralph Felker and Craig Dunn.
Ed Chapman of Auburn won the 25 lap True Value Legends Car feature event. He took the lead from Gary Chrysler of Gorham who then held off Doug Coombs of Livermore Falls for the second half of the race Dan McNamarra of Waterville, Long Island, NY was fourth and Chip Keene of Poland rounding out the top five.
Oxford returns to action next Saturday, July 31, night at 7:00pm. All five of Oxford's racing divisions in the weekly series will be on the docket. The 5th annual Hell on Wheels Show is set for 1:00 pm on Sunday, August 1.

SAM SESSIONS WINS THIRD OPS
PRO STOCK FINALE OF '99
OXFORD, ME - Sam Sessions of So Pans wasted no time in proving
that he's having his best ever Pro Stock season at Oxford Plains Speedway.
Saturday night he posted his third feature event win in the 35 lap main
event for Oxford's premier division. After trailing pole sitter,
Tom Mayberry of
Naples, for four laps, Sessions simply drove his ultra fast Chevrolet
Monte Carlo around the race leader. Even four caution flags, one
with only three laps to go, didn't allow Johnny Clark made a serious threat
develop into anything more than a test of speed. Every time Sessions
would drive away
by two or three car lengths to maintain the top spot. Clark stayed
second for the duration although Tommy Tompkins made a serious threat of
his own with three to go. Dana Staples ran thrid but lost it to Tompkins
at the checkered flag strip and Nick Nichols was able to hold off point
leader, Scott Chubbuck, for fifth at the finish line as well.
Brad Hammond won his fourth Late Model Stock Car point race of the year after taking the lead away from teammate Joe Consantino on lap three. After that, first it was Henry Hudson III trying to wrestle the lead away from the Hammond Chevrolet. He eventually faded to third. For ten laps Donnie Wentworth trid his best to make a solid run at the leadership role. He could catch Hammond but passing is always a different story. That was where it ended for Wentworth. Hudson was safely in front of David Beisaw who's fourth place finish was a career best ever effort. Mark Verrill again proved why he's a contender for the season points championship with yet another fifth place finish.
Corey Sanborn of S. Paris made the Limited Sportsman event the premier excitement event of the night by overtaking Troy Flaherty on lap 24 to scored his second win of the year. Flaherty, who had just one two go, thought he had his second win of the year himself but Sanborn sported that effort. Point leader, Kenny Harrison, added to his lead by finishing a very close third just ahead of Doug Poland who was trying to win two straight. Kurt Hewins recovered from a spin out on lap two and a close call on lap eleven to finish fifth.
While the Limited Sportsman race was exciting for the entire 25 lap
distance, the 20 lap Strictly Stock event had the most exciting finish.
Vance Martin led the first five laps but faded to ninth at the end.
Todd Bisbee took control at lap six and appeared to be cruising to his
third victory of the season. Shane Green then closed the gap by leaps
and bounds. In just four short laps he took the lead (lap 19) and
appeared to be headed for his fifth win of the year. That was before
backmarker, Mike Melcher, spun coming off turn four and, with the leaders
closing on the finish line, Green had to lift off the throttle because
he would have hit Melcher broadside if he didn't. Bisbee raced past
on the low side to post
his third win of the year and his second in three races. Green
was second, previous point leader David Haseltine was third and Wayne Reynolds
and Larry Emerson rounded out the top five.
Once Ralph Felker tasted the fruits of victory lane two week ago he made a habit of racing up front. Saturday night was no exception as he led the entire 20 lap distance to post his second win of the year and career at the same time. Butch Keene tried for 20 laps, but just didn't have the horses available to get around Felker. Mike Small continued to impress the mega crowd on hand with yet another third place finrsh. Point leader Jimmy Childs was fourth and Don Mooney rounded out the top five.
Oxford has a special Fiday night run the weekend, July 23. The True Value Legends Cars stage another of their traveling Championship night events. In addition the Oxford Late Model Stock Car, Limited Sportsman and Strictly Stock and Mini Stock divisions are on the agenda for the 7:00PM start. The Oxford Pro Stocks travel to Halifax, Nova Scotia for the fourth round of the International Pro Stock Challenge Series.

GORHAM TO SECOND OXFORD WIN
Oxford, ME - Sally Gherardi of Gorham won her second straight Oxford Plains Speedway Big Apple Texaco Summer Racing Series event of the year by taking the lead on lap 14 of the 20 lap race. Robbin Alden of Greene led the first four laps, then it was Jennifer Reed of Parsonsfield taking the top spot. Gherardi then moved to the front and never was challenged after that. Reed was second and Debbie Penny of Oxford then moved into the third spot. Patsy Hatch and Alden rounded out the top five.
Three drivers led the Mini Cup event of 20 laps. Danny Thurston of Andover was the first to set the pace. Erwin Carey of Mexico tried to win his third race of the year but Charlie Marks of Durham had the better car and he became the first three time winner. Carey fell back to second and Adrian Labrecque of Banger rounded out the top three.
Conrad Childs of Leeds took the lead from the pole and led the entire 20 laps of the 4 cylinder race. Scott Audet moved to second in the late going, just ahead of his brother Ted at the finish.
A couple of early lap spins out made the trip to the front of the Outlaw Race easy for points leader Jeff Moon of Gray. He was the leader on lap five of the 20 lap race and held off Adam Sanborn and Mike Ballard to score his third straight win. Kenny Farrington, Jr. and Jason Ricker rounded out the top five.
The Summer Racing Series at Oxford Plains Speedway continues next Wednesday night at 7:00PM at the Route 26 famed oval in Oxford.

RALPH NASON WINS THE JULY

TRUE VALUE 250 AT OXFORD
AGAIN
OXFORD, ME - Ralph Nason got into the True Value 250 the easy way in 1999. He won his 20 lap qualifying race with ease and that put him on the outside of the front row. Forty-six drivers made the race from a paid entry list of 101.
Nason, the defending Champion of the Classic, usually fights his way into the big event and then must drive a bonzi style to get to the front Sunday night, in front of more than 10,000 fans who witnessed the 26th annual True Value 250 in near 93° heat, Nason led and led and led. On lap 97, he and Tracy Gordon tangled, putting both at the rear of the field. Nason conducted a driving clinic for all who were watching.
Pete Shepherd of Brampton, ONT led the first lap, but he faded back into the field and finished 34th. Nason then led until his encounter with Gordon which handed the lead over to Ben Rowe of Turner until lap 124. That's when Nason had finally worked his way back into the lead. He made his insurance pit stop on lap 148. Oxford's weekly point leader, Scott Chubbuck, took the lead but it was only for lap 149. Second year driver, Tommy Tompkins of Carthage, then moved into the front spot. He held the lead until lap 171 when Ben Rowe took over. Rowe stayed on top of the field until lap 192 when Nason was scored as the official race leader.
That was the last time they were close for anything other than the final two caution flag that slowed the field a total of 17 times. That's not a record for caution flags, but it was probably the only thing that prevented Nason from making a shambles of the event. Rowe stayed second, although an incident with Tompkins, who was trying to get to the pit area because of mechanical failure with just a handful of laps remaining, almost took that position away from him. Scott Fraser of Shubenacadie, NS was third.
Fraser had gone down a lap early in the race and got back into the lead when Nason made his insurance pit stop. That put him at the tail end of the lead lap and when the lap 191 caution flew he was then able to join the race at the end of the realignment.
Sam Sessions, Tim Brackett and Scott Chubbuck all spent countless laps
in the top five throughout the 250 lap event. They finally earned
the fourth through sixth positrons. Adam Friend was seventh and even
he shared some top five time. Jeff Taylor returned to Oxford Plains
Speedway for the 250
and ran eighth after an encounter with the front stretch retaining
wall with Kirk Thibeau of Presque isle and Tompkins rounding out the top
ten.
Nason earned a tidy $42,700 for winning his second straight 250 championship. The crusty veteran then announced that he will make a 110% effort to become the first driver to win the "Richest One Day Short Track Race in North America" for a third straight year and be the only driver on record to accomplish that feat. Dave Dion of Hudson, NH is the most winning diver in the event with three wins. Geoffrey Bodine is the only driver to date to win back to back titles which he did in 1980 and 1981. It took Nason 21 tries to win his first one and now he's made it two straight.
Heat race winners of the 250 were Shepherd, Nason, Thibeau. Johnny Clark of Hallowell, Danny Bubar of Windham and Tompkins Andy Shaw of Center Conway NH, Mike Maretta, Jr. of So Portland, and Nick Nichols of Farmington won the second round events. Tommy Rowe of Turner made it to the race by winning the "Last Chance Race"
Support races were won by Doug Poland in Limited Sportsman, David Haseltine in Strictly Stock and Jimmy Robbins in Mini Stock.

CHRIS STAPLES IN WINNERS CIRCLE AT OPS
OXFORD, ME - Chris Staples of Brunswick got into the front row
of the 35 lap Maine State Lottery Night Pro Stock feature event by winning
his 12 lap qualifying race. He was on the outside of the front row
while Tom Mayberry of Naples started on the pole because he won the other
heat race. Staples
was the best car on the start and he was the best car whenever the
field was under caution because on each of the two restarts he simply outraced
whoever was beside him at the time. The end result was that Staples
led all 35 laps and even two time feature winner Sam Sessions was no match
for the 18 year old sensation Jerry Babb of Windham kept Sessions very
honest over the final 12 laps of the race and that allowed things to go
just a bit easier for Staples it was the "kid's" first win in a Pro Stock
in a career that spanned just four short years. The former LMSC Rookie
of the Year and then Pro Stock rookie of the year last year finally got
the break through win in the top ranked Pro Stock series. Session
was next and then Babb with Tommy Tompkins of Carthage was fourth and 1996
True Value 250 champion formed the field and finished fifth. Scott
Chubbuck should have retaken the point lead. Point leader Tim Brackett
appeared to explode an engine on lap 22 which brought out the final caution
flag of the race. Chubbuck of Wiscasset finished sixth and Brackett
was officially 26th. Twenty-five of the original 30 starters took
the checkered flag.
Brad Hammond won his fourth Late Model Stock Car feature of the year.
Ron Moon could only give chase after Charlie Colby spun himself out of
contention. That brought out one of the five yellow flag periods.
Don Wentworth of Bridgton was third Mike Short fourth and Corey Sanborn
fifth. Short
unofficially took the point lead because series leader Leon Heckbert
cut a tire down and finished 15 on the next to last lap.
Richie Morse returned to Oxford in fine style. The two-time champion led wire to wire in the 25 lap Limited Sportsman main event. Point leader, Kenny Harrison, was a close second and John Drew tried to wrestle the lead away from Morse in the early going faded back to third. Kurt Hewins moved to fourth and Archie Watt was fifth.
David Haseltine of Pownal returned to his favorite location at Oxford Plains Speedway with his third win of the year in the Strictly Stock division. For the second straight week Larry Emerson was second and Jon Bill was third Gerry Freve was fourth and Mark Bowie rounded out the top five.
Wayne Ttus of Lisbon Falls was the 1995 Mini Stock champion and Thursday
night he returned to victory lane for the first time since that championship
season. He led from lap three on and although Matt Barley ran second
he was no match for the more experienced Ttus. Mike Small continued
to be
impressive with another third place finish just ahead of Billy Thibeault
of Oxford and Don Mooney of New Gloucester.

PRO STOCK OPEN COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP
HUDSON BIG OPS WINNER ON SATURDAY NIGHT
OXFORD, ME - Henry Hudson III of Harrison started on the outside
of the front row on the 30 lap Late Model Stock Car division feature event,
and waiting until lap two before driving around lap one leader. Joe
Constantino of Auburn it was his third win of the year at Oxford Plains
Speedway.
Hudson then withstood the challenges of several divers during a total
of five yellow flag periods 1996 Champion Scott Luce of Strong ran second
for most of those restart challenges and stayed on Hudson's rear bumper
throughout the race. Charlie Colby of Newcastle challenged for the
win, then fell back to four and then raced back to third at the end.
Mike Short of Auburn and Corey Morgan of Bowdorn rounded out the top five.
Kenny Harrison of Pownal dominated the 25 lap Limited Sportsman main
event. He got the lead away from Mike Rand of Bridgton on lap 11
and never looked back. Harrison got some help from two early race
yellow flags and then when he finally took control he literally drove away
from the competition.
Rand stayed in the runner-up positron for the balance of the race with
Archie Watt, Jr. of Auburn finishing third. Chuck Estes of New Gloucester
raced to a fourth place positron and Jerry Harrison of Freeport rounded
out the top five.
The Strictly Stock feature event is 20 laps and it's qualifying races are 10 laps and in each case Shane Green of South Pans conducted a driving clinic. He raced around the 3/8 mile asphalt oval on the rim, also known as the Angel's Expressway, and won his 10 lap race with ease. He came back and did the same thing in the 40 car main event to take the lead on lap 11 and never looked back after that. Rick Dyer of Harrison was second and Larry Emerson of Durham raced hard to earn his third place finish. Defending champion David Haseltrne ran fourth and Kevin Morns of New Gloucester rounded out the top five.
Opie Tripp of Auburn got the break he needed with a lap 15 restart in the Mini Stock division mail event to score his second win of the year and his career. Early leader Ralph Felker looked like a sure winner until the yellow flag regrouped the field on lap 15 and he eventually faded to fourth, behind the racing Mooney brother of Bobby and Don. Point leader Jimmy Childs of Leeds finished up the night in fifth place.
Chip Keene of Poland had the strongest Legends Car of the night and
easily won the non-stop 25 lap main event for the popular type racer.
Joe Constantino of Auburn, who did double duty at Oxford on Saturday night,
stayed ahead of Doug Coombs of Livermore Falls for more than a dozen laps
to
finish second. Legends Series point leader Ed Chapman of Auburn
was fourth and Dale Stanley of Lincoln was fifth.
Oxford now prepares for Maine Speed Week '99 with it's traditional fireworks
and racing show on Thursday night at 7:00PM. The Big Apple
Summer Series presented by Texaco along with the Legend Cars is the feature
lineup on Friday night at 7:00PM. Mam-ly Action Sports will present
the weekly
racing series on Saturday night at 7:00PM when the Mini Cup cars get
added to the program.
Sunday at 2:00PM it's the $200,000 True Value 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway. The 26th annual event is expected to draw more than 100 hopefuls for it's potential $50,000 winners check from at least 10 states and five provinces of Canada.

BRACKETT TOPS OXFORD PRO STOCK FIELD
OXFORD, ME - The Saturday night weekly racing scenes at Oxford
Plains Speedway has been the meeting point for car counts and big crowds
all season long and this week saw the biggest weekly series crowd in recent
memory. Tom Brackett of Oxford came out atop the Pro Stock field
for the
second time this year, Dennis Spencer, Jr. won his third Late Model
Stock race of the season and Don Poulrn, Jr. made it a career first in
the Limited Sportsman ranks. David Haseltine got his second Strictly
Stock win and Jimmy Childs made it two straight in the Mini Stock finale.
Brackett stated the 35 lap feature run in 24th positron, but it was
his good fortune not to be involved in two major crashes that saw no less
the two Pro Stocks on their roof tops before the dust could settle.
The first incident was a 10 car crash and roll spectacular that saw Glenn
Josselyn on his roof top. Somehow all the other nine involved managed
to return to the track, minus many body panels in the second sequence front
runner Tom Mayberry and Chris Staples got together. When the dust
settled there Mike Weeden was on his roof top after working his way into
the top six in the running order. Johnny Clark eventually worked
his way to second and Bub Bilodeau did likewise to run third. Dana
Staples and Scott Moore survived a couple of near miss situations to round
out the top five at the finish.
Point leader, Scott Chubbuck, was involved in the first crash and although
returned, he was 13th and one lap in arrears. Coupled with Bracketts
win, those two likely swapped positrons in the point standings to be released
at mid-week.
Spencer of Turner won his 10 lap heat race which meant he's start the 30 lap feature event on the outside of the front row and wasted no time in getting to the front from pole sitter T J Brackett. He then survived at least a dozen serious tests by Don Wentworth before getting ahead by about two car lengths to post his win after suffering through two dismal weeks. Wentworth said that he had nothing for the ultra quick Spencer and was more than satisfied with his runner-up honor and point leader Leon Heckbert was a close third. Ron Moon and Mike Short rounded out the top five.
Mike Rand led the first 19 laps of the 25 lap Limited Sportsman race, but eventually Don Poulin, Jr., who spent 12 laps trying to take the top spot, moved into the lead on lap 20 and went on to score his first ever Limited Sportsman race on the 3/8 mile oval. Kurt Hewrns took advantage of the Larry Ayres and Richie Morse get together on the last lap to end up third. Point leader Kenny Harnson and Keith Stuart rounded out the top five
David Haseltine returned to the winners circle in the Strictly Stock division when apparent winner, Ben Tinker, failed to pass the post race inspection because of improper springs in his car. Cam Richards who led for two laps in the early going then moved up to second and Guy Childs was awarded third Point leader Shane Green would be fourth and Kim Tripp rounded out the top five.
Jimmy Childs made it two straight in the 20 lap Mini Stock main event. He got the lead on a lap 16 restart from rookie, Chris Moins, on the drop of the green. Moins then stayed second for the duration and Mike Small finished in the third spot. Ralph Felker who led the first 10 laps ran fourth and Don Mooney, returned after crashing out a week ago, to round out the top five.
Oxford returns to action for it's weekly series next Saturday night
at 7:00PM with Wal-Mart hosting the program featuring the Late Model Stocks,
Limited Sportsman, Strictly and Mini Stock. Among those four divisions
will be the NELCAR Legend Cars. The Oxford Pro Stocks have the night
off as the
international Pro Stock Challenge Senes moves to Halifax, Nova Scotia,
Canada for a 150 lap event before returning to Maine on July 1 to kick
off Maine Speed Week.

NICHOLS THE LATEST PRO STOCK
WINNER AT OPS
OXFORD, ME - Nick Nichols sits atop the Wal-Mart Rookie of the
Year standings in Oxford Plains Speedway's Pro Stock division and now he
can add a feature event win at the tough and famed 3/8 mile oval.
He started sixth in the 30 car field and after a 20 lap see-saw running
battle with Gary Drew. the Farmington racer, pulled away from the field,
only to nearly hand the win to Tim Brackett with less than a half lap to
go. It was also a test of stamina as twice the red flag flew for
violent and spectacular
crashes that saw the seven drivers involved all walk away from both
incidents.
In the first encounter on a lap two restart attempt Paul Bosse vaulted through the roof panel of Tim Cooks as both cars made contact with the retaining wall in the second encounter on lap 19 Chris Staples, Glenn Josselyn, Scott Robbins, Bill Lagerson, and Dennis Dee ended on top of each other under the starters stand. None of the seven were able to continue.
The five slow down periods gave top runners like Scott Chubbuck and Tim Brackett time to catch the leaders with Brackett being the best of the best. His second was about three lengths ahead of Gary Drew who finished third Chubbuck got around Jerry Babb with the white flag flying high for fourth and of course Babb stayed fifth Bub Bilodeau was a close sixth and Johnny Clark who led the first two circuits finished seventh.
Veteran Ronnie Moon of Cumberland returned to Oxford Plains Speedway this year after a three year layoff and put his Pontiac in front on lap three of the 30 lap Late Model Stock Car feature event to post his first OPS win in several years. Charlie Colby of Newcastle made his Oxford best effort in just over a year of competition with a runner up finish. Mark Vernll was third at the end Mike Short and point leader Leon Heckbert rounded out the top five. Only two minor accidents slowed the field of 23 cars.
Kurt Hewins finally broke into the winners circle in the 25 lap Limited Sportsman main event. He got the lead on lap 23 from Archie Watt Jr. who again showed a runner up effort for the night, his third time to the number two spot this year. Mike Rand led the first nine laps before an early exit with mechanical failure. Neil Martin then took the top spot but he slipped wide on lap 13 giving the lead to Watt who just couldn't hold off Hewins on the final restart on lap 22. Doug Poland scored his second straight third place finish. Point leader Kenny Harnson was fourth and John Drew returned to Oxford in grand style with a fifth place finish.
Rick Dyer of Harnson started thirteenth in the 38 car Strictly Stock feature field and on lap 11 he drove his familiar Ford to the top spot. He then held off point leader Shane Green over the final three laps for his win. Green started the race in the 27th and position and worked his way through the field and avoided the accidents that brought out the yellow flag four times. Mark Bowie was third defending division champion. David Haseltine fourth and Chris Corliss was fifth.
Point leader Jimmy Childs of Leeds won his first feature event of the year in the 20 lap Mini-Stock main event. He started seventeenth in the 22 car field and took the lead at lap 11. Ralph Felker led the first six circuits and then David Mooney took the lead until giving way to Childs. Mooney then stayed second for the remainder of the race with Butch Keen a very close third at the finish. Craig Dunn was fourth again and Steve Barker again crossed the line fifth.
Oxford returns to action again next Saturday night with the weekly racing series and the Big Apple Wednesday night Summer Series presented by Texaco make is 1999 start on June 16 as a mid-week special series.

SCOTT FRASER WINS HIS FIRST OPEN
AT OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY
OXFORD, ME - The 3rd annual New England Dodge Dealers 500 at Oxford Plains Speedway also served as the opening round of the international Pro Stock Challenge Series in the 100 lap Pro Stock segment. For Scott Fraser of Schubenacadie, Nova Scotia Canada it was well worth the 13 hour drive to the famed 3/8 mile Maine oval. Fraser started on the outside of the front row and then got into a side by side and chase and he battle with Jerry Babb of Windham for the lead. Finally, on lap 58, Fraser took command of the race and then survived four caution flag periods to eventually pull away for a two car length win over a fast closing. Tim Brackett of Oxford Babb would be third, just a length better that Dave Dion of Hudson, NH and he was only just a bit better than the effort from Ben Rowe of Turner. Fraser, duplicated the effort his father who won at Oxford exactly 20 years ago.
Brad Hammond of Turner spent 50 laps watching Corey Morgan and Mark Verrill swap the lead no less than nine times in the first fifty laps before taking command on lap 51 en route to his second straight win at Oxford. Mogan cut a tire in the close side by side race with Verrilll. He came back to run eighth but Verrill, who fell back to as far as sixth at one time, regrouped to get back into the top three. Ron Moon of Cumberland ran fourth and Mike Short, who also had a chance at the top three for more than 50 laps, was fifth at the end.
Kenny Harrison of Pownal had the easiest ride of the night in any of the five 100 lap segments of the 500. He led, wire to wire, to post his third Oxford win of the year. Archie Watt of Auburn got a break when contender Kurt Hewins cut a tire with 15 laps to go and finished a distant second. Mike Rand of Bridgton got back into racing Saturday night and finished third. Tommy Ricker of Poland and Steve Stuart of Naples ended the century count in fourth and fifth. David Haseltine of Pownal won the 500 in 1998 and for 80 laps he followed in the tire tracks of race leader Shane Green or short term runner-up Mark Bowie of Mechanic Falls before finally moving to the front with 18 laps to go. From that point on Haseltine was on cruise control and he posted his second straight 500 win. Bowie got around Green with 10 to go and they stayed in that formation for the duration. Rick Dyer of Harrison got a chance to challenge the top three on lap 91, but then faded to fourth and Jon Brill of Bridgton also got into the chase but settled for fifth.
Billy Thibeault of Oxford looked like a sure winner in the 100 lap Mini Stock segment and for 79 laps he was the best in the class. Don Mooney of New Gloucester chased Thibeault for 68 of those 79 laps and when Thibeault suffered gear failure Mooney jumped into the lead and then had to hold off a very determined Jimmy Childs of Leeds for the final 15 laps. Childs had a chance at the win on lap 94, but gave Mooney enough room to maneuver through lapped traffic and was satisfied with the runner-up spot. Craig Dunn of Strong was third, and the other two racing Mooney brother, Bobby and David finished in fourth and fifth
Oxford is back in action Saturday night with it's weekly racing series program starting at 7:00pm. The Land Power Tractor and Equipment sponsored night features the Pro Stock, Late Model Stock Car, Limited Sportsman, Strictly Stock and Mini Stock divisions

JERRY BABB TOPS 33 CAR TOPS PRO STOCK FIELD
Oxford Plains Speedway presented it's first mega night of racing
at the famed 3/8 mile oval with a total of nine feature events. Jerry
Babb of Windham was perhaps the most impressive driver of the night.
He topped the biggest Pro Stock field of the year at the famed 3/8 mile
oval with a convincing win in the 35 lap feature event Babb drew the outside
pole by virtue of winning the second of the two qualifying races.
He simply out raced Tom Mayberry off turn two of the first lap and then
had to worry
about upcoming potential lapped traffic with a fast closing Tim Brackett
to post his first win of the year.
Bill Lagerson came back to Oxford with a new race car after destroying his primary car two weeks ago. He drove to third. The best race of the night prevailed over the final nine laps with Scott Robbins and Robbie Harrison is a close side by side battle for fourth and fifth Robbins got the edge coming off turn four to the dash to the finish line and equaled his best finish as a Pro Stock rookie.
A pair of Late Model Stock Car feature events characterized two drivers getting their first wins of the 1999 season. Henry Hudson III of Harrison got the win in feature one and Brad Hammond raced back after being the opening race runner up to get his first win of the year. Mike Short shared a runner up trophy by being second in race number two Joe Constantino and Frank Snow were third place finishers.
Kenny Harrison of Pownal won the first of two Limited Sportsman 25 feature
events, but crashed hard in race number two. Tommy "Two Lap" Ricker
of Poland scored his second win in three weeks in the second event.
Runner up honors went to Billy Sprague and Corey Sanborn. The third
place finishers
included Steve Stuart and brother Keith Stuart in the second main event
of the night.
Rick Dyer of Harrison returned to the Strictly Stock ranks this year and won his first race in the division where he started just six years ago. Rookie Skip Tripp of Auburn got his first ever Strictly Stock win by virtue of the disqualification of Ferry Tucker. David Haseltine and Guy Stevens finished second in each of the two 20 lap main events. David Vaughn and Michael Stewart got the third place positions.
Steve Barker of Dryden broke out of the bad luck doldrums with a convincing win in the Mini Stock division Dave Mooney and Jimmy Childs chased Barker across the line from a distance.
Ed Chapman of Auburn won the Legends Car feature event. Doug Coombs and Chip Keene followed the top ranked Legends driver in their first visit to Oxford this year in the 25 lap main event.
Oxford returns to action next Saturday at 2 PM for the third annual
New England Dodge Dealers 500. The unique format features all five
of Oxford's weekly division in big money 100 lap feature events.
The Pro Stock segment will also serve as the opening round of the much
anticipated international
Pro Stock Challenge Series which pits more than a dozen of Canada's
top racers against more than three dozen US candidates. The six race
series will pay competitors more than $300,000 for the races that are divided
between Oxford and Scotia Speedworld in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

BILODEAU WINS OPS 32 CAR PRO STOCK FEATURE
OXFORD, ME---Sunday marked the final Sunday afternoon of racing
at Oxford Plains Speedway
as the famed 3/8 mile oval now switches to the Saturday night format
But Bub Bilodeau of
Standish would probably like to keep up the Sunday format as he roared
to his first Pro Stock
win of the year 32 cars took the grid for the 35 lap main event with
Peter Melanson of St. Albans
on the outside of the front row Rookie Scott Robbins of Dixfield started
on the pole Bilodeau was
lined up fifth Oxford starts their heat races by the points handicap
system, but it's heads up for
the Main Event.
Melanson led the first seven laps before giving way to Gary Drew of
West Burton for lap 8
Melanson went back to the front for lap nine and ten, but then on the
second of the four restarts
Bilodeau got the upper hand and it was all over at that point. 18 year
old Chris Staples moved
through the field quickly from his ninth starting spot to be a factor
for a couple of laps before
settling in for second. Melanson faded back to third, Robbins to fourth
and Jerry Babb raced his
way from fifteenth to fifth
Charlie Colby of Newcastle looked like a sure winner in the 30 lap Late
Model Stock Car, but
when his chassis began to fade away on lap 20 he could only hand on
until lap 23 when Leon
Heckbert of Farmington simple drove to the bottom and Colby was then
hung out to dry A lap
later he was spun by Mike Short, that move prompted a black flag and
Short was placed at the
rear of the field, which let Donnie Wentworth of Bridgton to move into
second. Corey Morgan of
Bowdoin then moved to third, for the third straight week, and Mark
Verrill worked his way to
fourth. Frank Snow of Bridgton, who was a factor for the lead in the
early laps stayed fifth.
The best race of the day was easily the 25 lap Limited Sportsman main
event. Tommy Picker of
Poland led the first 17 laps, but he lost his chance at winning when
he broke a rear axle. For
laps 18 through 20 Corey Sanborn of S. Paris took his turn leading,
but he was in the middle
lane and Kurt Hewins of Leeds was on the bottom lane. Kenny Harrison
of Pownal was looking
at the outside lane while Sanborn were swapping the lead. Hewins was
the front runner from 21
until 23 when Sanborn retook the point. For the final lap they raced
three wide and the margin of
the position spread was just about a 1 2 car length for each
Sanborn was first, Hewins second
and Harrison third. Donnie Poulin Jr. of Greene was fourth, although
he was fast enough to be
better, but there was no racing room available Andy Phillips
of Phillips rounded out the top five
finishers.
The 20 lap Strictly Stock main event was the Todd Bisbee show. He simply
started on the pole,
led the entire distance and had no competition on the lap six restart,
the only time the 32 car
field had to slow down. The best battle was for second through fifth
as Cam Richards of Oxford
had it lost, fell back to fourth and then worked his way back to the
number two spot Michael
Stewart of Durham made his first ever trip to the podium in victory
lane with a third place finish
Mark Bowie who got to second once fell back to fourth and "The Defender",
David Haseltine of
Pownal rounded out the top five Matt Bailey moved his racing operation
to Oxford Plains
Speedway this year, but the way he drove Sunday would leave one to
think that he'd been a
season veteran there. He led all but laps 17 and 18 when Dennis Spencer
of Otisfield got the
jump during the only restart of the day in the 20 lap main event for
the Mini Stock ranks Bobby
Mooney had a double dose of good times with a third in the race, and
the birth of a boy baby on
Tuesday which caused wife Wanda to stay at home with son Kyle instead
of overseeing the
Mooney family racing operation. Billy Thibeault of Oxford and Jimmy
Childs of Leeds rounded
out the top five.
