Meet Moby

Moby and Robbie relaxing together

Almost two years after I adopted my foster boy, Moby, he was diagnosed with cancer. And a quick three months later (10/99) I lost him to the dreaded disease. He was the epitome of the happy, loving Golden, with an abnormal obsession for tennis balls! His temperament was outstanding. He came to me 40 lbs. overweight (thus the name!) and after losing it became a lean muscular gorgeous red boy. His loss left me with great sadness, but fond memories. My friend wrote the following beautiful poem for Moby after he went to the Bridge:

My Friend the Red Dog

It was summer
the day we met;
You were a beautiful, red dog
happily bounding along
after a tennis ball
while the warm sunbeams danced
along your gleaming red coat
and I smiled-
right down to my toes I smiled;
What more simple pleasure
could one human ask for
on a summer day,
or any day
than you-
a gentle breeze
a most golden soul.

My sweet, red friend
you simply greeted me
with a mouthful
of tennis balls,
and a gleefully wagging tail;
and I laughed so hard
like my heart
was your tennis ball too!
How fortunate I would be then
to have
such love and devotion!

And though today I am sad,
and will miss you-
I will fondly
think of you often
-of rubbing your soft ears
and your warm, red coat,
and of watching
your eager face
as you wait
expectantly
for me
to throw you a tennis ball
and then you give it right back
to me again
and again and
again.

I will imagine you
running, happily
amidst the greenest
of fields;
My friend, the red dog
playing
in the warm sunshine
for always;
And on that blissful day
we meet again
God willing-
I'll bring you
a tennis ball.
