About the Battle School

An Interplanetary Fleet installation designed to train its future captains, commodores, and admirals.

Battle school students are generally admitted at age six and graduated at sixteen. Battle School core subjects are math, computers, military history, and strategy, with emphasis on participation in battleroom manuevers. Selected battle school graduates move on to Command School, another military installation located on Eros.

The Battle School itself is an orbital station, featuring the battleroom at its center. The Battle Room is kept in a nullo, or weightless, state. Students practice microgravity manuevers in the battle room, in preparation for duty on an attack vessel.

During the maneuvers, students are divided into various platoons and are equipped with flash suits and guns. When a flash-gun beam comes in sufficient contact with a flash suit, the affected area of the suit becomes frozen. When enough of a flash suit becomes frozen, the student becomes immobilized and is counted as a casualty. The general idea is to immobilize all the members of the opposing platoon.

Extensive statistics are kept concerning the maneuvers, including number of times each student is immobilized, fires, scores and fails to score.

A successful maneuver strategy pioneered by Ender Wiggin involved conceptualizing the enemy gate as "down" -- the object being to "fall" towards the enemy gate. (Remember, maneuvers take place in microgravity). Wiggin also ordered his platoon members to freeze their own legs and use them as body shields as they maneuvered towards the enemy gate.
