The philotic communicator was in military use during the 3rd Bugger invasion, and came into commercial use thereafter. Like the original Ansible, the philotic communicator can transmit a transgalactic message with no apparent lapse of time.

The philotic communicator took its common name, ansible, from novels written by Ursula K. LeGuin in the late 20th century
