BEYOND TAMMY

Wednesday March 7, 2007 was a victory, of sorts, for one abducted, raped, and murdered, little girl - Jessica Marie Lunsford, and her family. The jury took four hours to find John Evander Couey guilty. I can't imagine the hell she went through of being raped then being buried alive.

Mark Lunsford, like other parents before him (the Smart family, Mark Klass, John Walsh, et al.) is a hero. I can't imagine how he gets out of bed each day; I can't begin to imagine his grief. He has started a foundation, The Jessica Marie Lunsford Foundation. The goal is to help children in crisis.

To Mark Lunsford, Mark Klass, Adam Walsh, the Smart's, and all of the other families that suffer through having a child abducted, my heart goes out to you. It's sad but true, the laws only change in response to an abduction. Laws are not made prior to abductions in many states. We have mandatory federal sentencing when it comes to breaking drug laws but not when it comes to abducting, molesting, and killing our children. Something needs to change!

Megan's Law

"Megan's Law" is the name given to 1996 federal law requiring registration and community notification laws and named after Megan Kanka of New Jersey. Megan was raped and murdered by a neighbor after he moved in across the street from her. The 1996 federal law required each state to develop some form of registration and notification. Each state and the District of Columbia has developed their own "Megan's Law" and you can read and download each state's here:
