I really enjoy history. England and Scotland have so much to offer and admire. I first visited Scotland in November of '98. We went up to
Gretna Green to get things rolling for my wedding, which was scheduled for the early part of the coming year. A marriage which didn't last for many reasons. But that is another story, which doesn't have a nice ending. So, we won't get into that, will we? LOLTo drive around Scotland was a dream I thought would never happen......but there I was looking at all the things I saw in books, and dreamt about for so many years. I saw many things in the Galloway & border region (which is the southern part of Scotland) that I loved......

Part of the Caerlaverock Castle dates back to the late 13th and 14th century. The castle is in a shape of a triangle with an inner and outer moat. This castle stood guard over the Solway Firth (River) and as a sentry to Scotland for over four hundred years. The rich red stone is peaceful now, but if those stones could talk they would tell of knights and sieges, lords and lieges, courts and kings.

Lady Devorgilla of Galloway founded the Abbey of Sweetheart, in the town of New Abbey, in 1273 in memory of her late husband, John Balliol. At her own death in 1289 her body was laid to rest before the high altar and her husband's embalmed heart, her 'sweet, silent companion', placed beside her in the tomb. The monks chose the beautiful name of Sweetheart, or Dulce Cor, for the abbey in her memory.

While I were there, I also went to see where Robert the Bruce was born, which was totally in ruins and in such an isolated place by a loch....very eerie. I searched one of the caves, which they claimed, he hid from the English for three months.....following is a picture of the cave. On the top is also writing in the accent Scottish scroll....the picture doesn't show it to well, but it was so neat to see it in person......carved in stone with a piece of metal or whatever they use in those days.

Following are some pictures of
Edinburgh Castle, where the annual Military Tattoo is done each year....both are taken from the bus tour around the city of Edinburgh|
