Ask the average "Joe" about your state's budget. Does he know where most of the money is being spent? Probably not. Most people are surprised to discover that a large segment of tax dollars (often over 50% of the budget) goes for education. Why? Because people care about the education of their children. That applies to teaching them spiritual truths as well.
Your customers are no different. And if you show them that you care as much about their kids as they do—and as Jesus did—your store will not only grow economically, but it will plant spiritual seeds in the hearts of young people that could last for generations!
How to reach little ones?
Try a once-a-month story time. I suggest you do it in your store. If the thought of fifty to a hundred little one's banging through your aisles makes you a little nervous, consider this: yes, they may break a thing or two, then again, maybe not. Likely, their parents will buy enough products to more than compensate you for any damaged goods. (Use common sense, by the way. Get breakables out of harm's way).
Saturday afternoon is a busy time for your store. It's also a good time for story time. Let your customers see that you care. Let them spread the word about all the children that were crowded into your store.
Think into the future! Twenty years from now, the little one's who visited your store this week will have fond memories of story times. They will want to come back.
Story time, of course, will be a time when you, a staff member or volunteer will read from a book you have in stock. Make it available to parents, maybe at a discount.
What if parents don't come? Require them to be there. After all, story time is not a free baby-setting service.
The way to ensure that parents accompany their children is make story time by invitation only. Have fliers printed on color paper. Make them available on your counter and give them to parents when they shop. The fliers will include an enrollment form that will require parents to accompany their children. Promote story time as an occasion for parents to enjoy a time together with their children.
Think of a name for your story time that communicates this thought. I personally like "Together Time" with a sub-heading, "A Special Time When Parents Can Listen to Bible Stories with Their Children."
If you'd like to see a sample flier, just let me know. I'll fax one to you. The best way to reach me is by email: 1492@usa.com.
Hints:
When printing fliers, print them "two up" to save money. That is, print two fliers per 8.5 by 11 paper, then have the printer cut them to 8.5 x 5.5.
In some area, children's missionaries may volunteer to do story time for you. (I suggest you pay them for their time. $50 to $100 would be a reasonable honorarium).
