Northern Areas of Pakistan
Pakistan’s
Northern Areas are as fascinating as it’s southern region. It is here that the
world’s three famous mountain ranges meet the Himalayas, the Karakorams and the
Hindukush. The whole of Northern Pakistan has come be known as a paradise for
mountaineers, climbers, trekkers and hikers.
In the northern
regions of Pakistan , at a stone’s throw from the Amu Darya, is Bame-Dunya “the
roof of the world” this was the name given to the great pamir plateau, apex of
six of the mightiest mountain ranges of the world
The historic
Karakoram Pss 5575 meters, an ancient trading route between Kashmir and sin
kiang, gives its name to the range west of it, which forms the watershed between
the Indus and the central Asian deserts. The eastern boundary of the Karakoram
is the upper shyok river from where it extends over 322kms. Westwards to the
Karumbar River and the Hindukush range. To the north the karakoram is bounded
by the shaksgam tributary of the Yarkand River and south by the Indus. Here,
the Naga Parbat 8,126 metres massif is the western anchor of the great
Himalayan range, which stretches in an arc 24,124 Kms.
East to Burma, a
boundary and barrier, “the razor’s edghe” which for centuries has determined
the destiny of the Indian sub-continent.
Such is the settings of the Karakoram Range, this
remnant of a primeval ice age, “the third pole,” with extensive glaciers
mountains in the world. Some of the largest glaciers Lake Saiful Muluk have a
touch of the unreal about it, nesting 3,200 metres high in the shadow of the
Malika Parbat (Queen of the mountains) 5,291 metres high. You can go boating on
the lake and hear the local legends about Prince Saiful Muluk who fell in love
with a fairy. Further up are quaint woodland villages; Battaakundi, burawai,
Besal Gittidas and Lalazar.
