Chrono Cross

"What was the start of all this?
When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?

Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
From deep within the flow of time...

But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...

Yet even then, we ran like the wind,
Whilst our laughter echoed,
Under cerulean skies..."

- Chrono Cross Intro

Chrono Cross is the most well-known sequel for Chrono Trigger. It is the story of a boy named Serge, who lives a normal life, until he accidently discovers a portal leading to another world, much like his own, but yet in many ways different. Here his adventure begins. In the alternate reality, Serge discovers secrets and truths about himself in this realm. History, it seems is quite different here as none of the familiar faces of his old friends seem to know him. From here, Serge meets a girl named Kid who may well replace his girlfriend Leena, and together they take on the demi-human Lynx whose evil plans must be stopped. Lynx, is after an all-powerful object called the Frozen Flame, to put his evil plans in motion. Serge and Kid, together, must do what they can to stop him.

For Chrono Trigger fans, Chrono Cross is like its predecessor in many ways, and yet is completely original. It has the multiple endings feature of CT, as well as the New Game + feature, but it also has story branches within the game. There are 40 playable characters in CC. Certain are obviously developped better than others, as some it seems at times are just to fill party space, but they still each have individual personalities. Which characters you meet and which ones join your party, depend on the choices you make in the game. The system for magic is also entirely unique and works with "Grids" that allow elements to be placed on them. For CT fans, there are also many references to Chrono Trigger and its plot in CC, but it is not neseccary to play CT in order to understand CC. Characters from the orginal game also make appearances and are involved in the story. Chrono Cross, although it cannot replace Chrono Trigger, is still an awesome game that deserves a spot in any RPG Fan's Library.
