Dear Norma I came across your name as the keeper of the Burns surname registry for Mifflin County 1681 to date. I am looking for any Burns names from the period up to 1830. My 4 x great-grandfather was James Burns, Esq., of Derry (b. 1740), my 3 x great-grandfather was Robert Burns (b. 1771, d. 1830), my great-great-grandfather was Liberty Burns (b. 1816, but I dont know where either Derry, Juniata, or Jefferson County). Robert Burns married Sarah Turner, also of Mifflin in 1796, but all the kids ended up in Jefferson County, as did the widow Sarah in 1830, and the Family Search site of LDS shows Robert and Sarahs marriage was recorded in Jefferson County in 1820. Robert Burns is buried in Corsica, over near Jefferson County. Thanks so much for any help or advice you can give me! Katherine Burns Vaughan

Subject: BURNS & TURNER families
Dear Norma,
I was astonished and thrilled to find your page on the BURNS family, which
pretty accurately depicts my own line through LEWIS TURNER, who was my great-grandfather. He was, however, not the son of BERGATA, but of the second
wife. There are three children of the marriage to BERGATA, and the dates and places of birth are not quite right on the other children.
They did not arrive in Bluffton until about 1837, shortly after which BERGATA died.
The woman ROBERT married was also from Pennsylvania, and I would like to trace
her-- it seems likely they knew each other from then. My information on this is scattered, but for the LEWIS TURNER family we do have the Bible.
Wherever did you get this information on that branch of the family? I am amazed. I spent an enormous amount of time figuring out where ROBERT B TURNER
came from in Pennsylvania, and it was only when I discovered that he had been a member of the Indiana legislature and later a judge did Mifflin
show up. I had looked at TURNER'S all over Pennsylvania, and the dates never lined up right. I now have the will of his father, but could get no
farther back than this. So your work is a Godsend.
I haven't quite assimilated the whole site, which is truly excellent and amazing. Congratulations. Would you mind if I ask you a few questions as I
get a chance to work through it?
Best,
STEPHEN TURNER

Hi Jack,
I have been checking, but have been unable to find any new data
This is what I Have :
1 James H. TURNER
Birth: abt 1765, Derry Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania
Death: 23 Apr 1811, Derry Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania
Reli: Presbyterian
Father: John or Johannes TURNER (<1718-1802)

James father's records are reported to be in Carlisle Courthouse.
Born prior to 1765, migrated into Derry Township in 1800 from Cumberland County. Purchased 242 acres of land on East Side of Kish Creek in vicinity of Mt. Rock
This could be the father of Sarah Turner. The 1810 Census of Miffin County, Pennsylvania shows a James Turner with males Under 10-1, 10/16-2, 16/26-1 and 45 /over-1. Females under 10-1, 16/26-1 and 45/over -1.

Jim writes, "I haven't done any genealogical work for several years but I was able to find my notes concerning the Turner family ( my Wife's ancestors). I found the document that proved James Turner to be the Son of John Turner of Cumberland County in the will books of the Cumberland County Court House. Mifflin County was once a township of Cumberland County. The will may be found in will book (F) page 336. Also, at the same court house in the land records, I found a deed from James Turner to James Culver in Deed Book (L) page 351. The will listed all of the children of John Turner and locates the son James in the correct township. If my memory is correct, James moved to Mifflin County shortly after the will was settled and probably bought land with the proceeds. I have a copy of the will but the copy is poor and it is very difficult to read. They may have a better copying machine at the court house now. If you are unable to obtain it, I will send you a copy of the one I have. I did some searching for the Father of Mary Beatty in Philadelphia but I never found anything."
Spouse: Mary BEATTY
Birth: abt 1760
Death: 23 Mar 1827, Derry Township, Mifflin County, Pennsylvania
Marr: abt 1782
Notes: On Mary Beatty
Reported to have come to America from Scotland when she was seven years old. About 1770
Went with her son Robert to Ohio about 1830
John Beaty b. abt 1737, was married to Elizabeth ?. They lived for a time in Cumberland Co, PA where several of their children were born, but John died in 1823, Wayne Twp, Mifflin co, PA.
John and Elizabeth had the following children; i. Eleanor Beatty (my ancestor), ii. George Beatty (died young), iii. Hannah Beatty, iv. Margaret Beatty, v. Martha Beatty, vi. Jane Beatty, vii. Susannah Beatty, and viii. Mary Beatty (John & Elizabeth).
Eleanor Beaty married George Baxter 1-9-1794 in Hopewell Twp, York co, Pa. They had the following children, all christened at the Hopewell Presbyterian Church, by Rev. Cathcart; Rosanna (my ancestor), Jno. McDonald, Margaret, Susanna, and Andrew Finley.
These people were, apparently Scots-Irish that settled in the Hopewell Twp area of PA, in about 1750, and were part of a group of 15 or 16 families who established the Round Hill (Hopewell) Presbyterian church, in 1759.

Sarah Turner was born November 20, 1793 (Tombstone Dates) in Mifflin, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. She was a daughter of James Turner and Mary Beatty Turner. Mary Beatty came to the United States from Scotland when she was seven years old.
JOHN MORRISON and SARAH TURNER were married in Lewistown, Pennsylvania, December 13, 1813. They moved to Jefferson County, Ohio, in about the year 1817. They rode horseback, with Sarah Turner Morrison carrying her oldest child, JOSEPH MORRISON, on her lap. She also carried with her her six silver spoons, each of which was made from a Mexican silver dollar (the only kind of silver dollars then). John Morrison had the spoons made for her, sending the six silver dollars to Philadelphia. They were all engraved with her initials S.M.
They first settled at Steubenville, Ohio. They then moved down on the west side of what is known as Gould's Tunnel. Later they moved to Unionport. They moved again in the spring of 1838, coming down the river on a steamboat, the Buffalo. They landed at the mouth of the Little Hocking River and moved onto the Curtis farm where they stayed a few weeks until they bought the farm in Troy Township, Athens County. They then moved over on Big Hocking to the farm known as the Dinsmore farm. Joseph Morrrison, John Davidson and John Reed hewed the logs for the house. The whole farm was uncleared when they moved there. The house they built was 20' by 24' with one room downstairs and one room upstairs. This property stayed in the possession of the Morrisons until about 1890.
John Morrison died March 22, 1875.
