Subject: THOMAS BURNS 1761

My name is ROBERT BURNS (HOMER, EDWARD, STEPHEN, ARCHIBALD, THOMAS) an ex Sligo PA resident and a sixth generation descendant of THOMAS BURNS 1761. I know all the children of THOMAS, STEPHEN, EDWARD & HOMER but not all the children of ARCHIBALD. I know of RICHARD, WILLIAMS & STEPHEN and where they are buried. In Fact I know where all my ancestors are buried up to THOMAS. Unfortunately nobody seem to know where he is buried.

I have a photograph of STEPHEN and eight of his nine children taken in 1907. JOHN "UNCLE JACK" BURNS was not in the photo. He was, however, still living at that time.

From: WIN APEL
Back in the 1860s this mystery lady lived part of her life in the little village of Windsor, Ohio. After her last child was born in 1889 she seems to disappear from all records. Possibly she divorced and moved away or re-married and died. - we have no idea when she died, nor where she is buried.

Adding to the confusion I have seen her listed as ELLA, ELLEN and DELLA. ELLA BURNS married GEORGE HENRY GUSHARD on June 30, 1883 in Mansfield, Ohio. I could not find GEORGE in the 1900 Ohio census, but he does show up in the 1910 census as divorced - and living alone - later however the 1920 census lists him as widowed and in 1936 his obituary states he was widowed - so these records do not agree.

Their children are: 1) MARY GUSHARD, 2) ARTHUR HENRY GUSHARD, 3) BLANCH GUSHARD, & 4) CATHERINE GUSHARD - all of Ohio and all deceased.

Descendants of Unknown BURNS - Oct 17, 1999 ------------------------------------------------------- FIRST GENERATION

1. Unknown BURNS. He was married to MARGARET MONTGOMERY (born in Scotland (PA?)). MARGARET MONTGOMERY is probably the mother of THOMAS BURNS. She died in U.S. Unknown BURNS and MARGARET MONTGOMERY had the following children:

+2 i. THOMAS BURNS

SECOND GENERATION

2. THOMAS BURNS born 1761 in Ireland, died Feb 2, 1846 in Clarion County, PA. He was buried in Curlesville, PA. THOMAS BURNS served in the Revolutionary War.

TOM BURNS, descendant of THOMAS BURNS, has extensive history of the BURNS family in his published family history. -- BURNS History.
"There are only two clues, as far as I know, relating to the birthplace of THOMAS BURNS. Perhaps the best, and first, is in a History of THOMAS BURNS, written by CAROLINE MONKS of Cleveland, OH., in 1976: "In the fall of 1946 I went to Kittanning and Clarion (PA) to see what I could learn at the courthouses, and I went to Curlesville and Sligo (PA) to try to find someone descended from THOMAS and MARGARET BURNS. Also, I hoped to locate their graves, but I did not accomplish this.

Someone suggested that I call on Mrs. MARTHA HAMILTON of Hawthorn. I paid her a brief visit one afternoon, and she graciously permitted me to copy some information from a piece of paper which appeared to be a copy of a Bible Record, but, although I have tried earnestly to locate this Bible I have never been able to do so. As I believe that THOMAS and MARGARET BURNS lived with their son ARCHIBALD BURNS for a number of years before their deaths, it would seem reasonable that if there is a Bible which once belonged to them it must now be in the possession of some descendent of ARCHIBALD BURNS.

The paper, which Mrs HAMILTON permitted me to copy was headed: "Children of THOMAS BURNS,SR., son of an Irish Peer, Ireland, and of MARGARET MONTGOMERY of Scotland. It stated that THOMAS BURNS was born in Ireland in 1761."

On this trip, I also visited Mrs FLORA L KETNER of Sligo,PA., who told me she was a granddaughter of ARCHIBALD BURNS. She did not know where THOMAS and MARGARET BURNS were buried, she did not know of a Family Bible, but she did have some information which she promised to send to me. I received a letter from her dated Nov. 19,1946, containing the same information I had obtained from Mrs HAMILTON. There was a difference in the heading, however. She wrote: "THOMAS BURNS, SR. was the son of an Irish Peer in Ireland. His wife, MARGARET MONTGOMERY, was born 1769 and died June 1848."

How can we then account for the records given to me by Mrs HAMILTON and Mrs KETNER? I have concluded that both of these ladies misinterpreted this record, that Mrs KERNER'S was a copy of Mrs HAMILTON'S except that she actually stated that MARGARET MONTGOMERY was THOMAS BURNS' wife, which both ladies believed. However, the record shown to me by Mrs HAMILTON can be interpreted in a different way, namely, these are the children of THOMAS BURNS, who was the son of an Irish Peer of Ireland and MARGARET MONTGOMERY of Scotland, PA.

This would mean that MARGARET MONTGOMERY was THOMAS BURNS' mother, and that it was his intention to record where his parents came from. We know that his wife MARGARET was born in this country. Therefore I do believe that MARGARET MONTGOMERY was his mother." *End of excerpts from CAROLINE MONK*" -- BURNS History, p.1

"The second clue can be found in a History of St. Joseph co. Indiana on page 854. in an autobiography of THE HONORABLE ALBERT MINNIS BURNS There is, I believe, at least one error in this sketch, which says that THOMAS BURNS' father was a native of the Northern Ireland, born August 5, 1812, but when a young man he came to America,. taking up his abode in Pennsylvania where he became a prominent contractor and builder, devoting his entire life to that Pursuit.

If we now look at the Register of Relatives developed by WILLIAM W BURNS, a grandson of THOMAS and MARGARET BURNS, we will find that there was a THOMAS BURNS, b. 5th of August, 1812 to THOMAS and MARGARET BURNS, but THOMAS and MARGARET at that time were in Pennsylvania, not Ireland. We can readily conclude that it was not ALBERT'S father who was born in Ireland, rather it was ALBERT'S grandfather. It may be that an error was made by the publisher of the book in transcribing information probably furnished by ALBERT M BURNS." -- BURNS History, p.1.

"From the Lycoming Gazette of July 10, 1825, page 3, found at the J.B. Library in Williamsport PA, this item: A certain messuage, or tract of land, situate in Chapman Twp., in said county, containing 100 acres more or less, adjoining lands of ROBERT LUSK, ESQ., and others, on the north side of the west branch of the Susquehanna, about two miles above the mouth of the Sinnamahoning creek, with the appurtenances consisting of a Log Dwelling House and Barn thereon erected with about thirty acres of cleared land, in the occupancy of THOMAS BURNS. Seized, taken in execution, and to be sold as the property of the said THOMAS BURNS. Sheriff's Sale of 100 acres more or less, adjoining lands of JOHN BAIRD, JOHN CALDWELL, and others and the river Susquehanna, with a cabin dwelling house, and stable thereon erected, with about thirty acres of cleared land, in the occupancy of JOHN BARR Seized, taken in execution and to be sold as the property of THOMAS BURNS and JOHN BARR." -- BURNS History, pp. 1-2.

THOMAS BURNS was married to MARGARET MCNEIL, daughter of ARCHIBALD MCNEIL (MCNEAL) and ANN FEW (GRUBB) in 1787 in Chester Co., PA. THOMAS BURNS and MARGARET MCNEIL has 14 children, and all but one had children. WILLIAM was the only one who did not, as he died as as an infant. -- MARTHA BURNS

There is extensive history of all descendants of the 14 children of THOMAS BURNS and MARGARET MCNEIL in the BURNS Family History written by TOM BURNS (more at the bottom of this page). MARGARET MCNEIL was born on Feb 22 1769 in Chester Co., PA. She died on June 4, 1848 in Clarion County, PA & was buried after June 4, 1848 in Alum Rock, PA.

"Some information indicates that MARGARET MCNEIL BURNS was buried at Alum Rock, PA. However, her husband is buried at Curlesville, PA, as are several other members of the BURNS Family and it is quite possible she may be buried with her husband. The farm on which she and her husband lived is near Curlesville. Alum Rock is at some distance."

"THOMAS BURNS, b. 1761, was in Chester County PA and in the right township during the years when MARGARET MCNEIL [granddaughter of ELIZABETH HAMILTON] was of marriageable age. The MARGARET MCNEIL identified as the granddaughter of ELIZABETH HAMILTON in ELIZABETH'S will is believed to be the same MARGARET who became the wife of THOMAS BURNS, b. 1761."

MARGARET MCNEIL was one of many grandchildren mentioned by name in the will of ELIZABETH HAMILTON. ELIZABETH HAMILTON had two sons, HECTOR and ARCHIBALD. ELIZABETH could have been the child of either one. THOMAS BURNS and MARGARET MCNEIL had the following children:

+3 i. ESTHER BURNS
+4 ii. HECTOR BURNS
+5 iii. CATHERINE BURNS
6 iv. WILLIAM BURNS born Oct 23, 1794 in Pine Creek Township, Lycoming Co., PA. He died in infancy.
+7 v. ELEANOR (ELLEN) BURNS.
8 vi. ELIZABETH BURNS , born Aug 21, 1798 in Lycoming Co., Berkeley PA. died 1848 in Davis Co., IA. She was buried 1848 in Davis Co., PA, West Union Cemetery.
9 vii. JAMES BURNS born Aug 21, 1798 in Lycoming Co., PA. died Mar 9, 1873 in Van Buren, IA.
+10 viii. NANCY A. BURNS
11 ix. ARCHIBALD BURNS
12 x. MARGARET GALLAGHER MONTGOMERY BURNS
13 xi. HARRIET DUNCAN BURNS
14 xii. RICHARD BURNS
15 xiii. THOMAS BURNS
16 xiv. STEPHEN DUNCAN BURNS

Subject: Descendents of STEPHEN DUNCAN BURNS

I noted while perusing your web site about THOMAS BURNS, b. 1761, husband of MARGARET MCNEIL, that your list of descendents did not include any children of STEPHEN DUNCAN BURNS. STEPHEN DUNCAN BURNS was born 25 Dec 1814, in Lycoming Co, Pa and married SARAH M TORRANCE of Clarion Co PA, born 16 Oct 1815.

Their Children were as follows:

MARGARET JANE BURNS m. ____ Helper,
ALICE BURNS, 1850-1873
SARAH BURNS, 1852-1852

I can trace the descendents of THOMAS BOLTON BURNS to Myself and beyond. THOMAS BOLTON BURNS married MARY JANE ARMSTRONG 22 Feb 1872 in Clarion Co, PA where both were born, while both died in Adams Co, Ne.

THOMAS B BURNS SR married QUESTA LEONE FRAETIS in St Paul MN in 1946. QUESTA was born in Southgate, CA in 1921. Little is known of her family except for her mother, EDITH M PITT FRAETIS BRADFORD and her only brother, ELDEN "RED" FRAETIS.

Their children are as follows:
THOMAS BARROWS BURNS JR, 1947- *
JOHN ELDEN BURNS SR, 1953- *
JAMES WILLIAM BURNS, 1959-all living

JOHN ELDEN BURNS SR, SSG, USA, (RET) married JERRY DEE ALLEN in Las Vegas, Nevada, 12 Mar 1972,(3 wks after their 1st child was born). JERRY was born 3 Mar 1954, in Topeka, Ks. They remain married until divorced in Nov 1978. Together they had 3 children. JOHN later married JANIECE GAIL BURNS, of Kansas City, (by telephone, while stationed in Germany on 3 Jan 1980 at Ft Leavenworth, her; and Schweinfurt, Germany, he), no issue.

THOMAS and SANDY had one son, THOMAS BARROWS BURNS III 1974-living

2. His brother JAMES DUNCAN BURNS was apparently not as lucky, according to family stories, JAMES went to NY to join what believed to be a NY Inf Reg, designation unknown. Further Family stories say that he died 30 Nov 1864 (KIA), where? unk, buried, unconfirmed, Arlington Nat Cem.

3. THOMAS BARROWS BURNS SR, served the US Army Air Corps (stateside, training) during WWII. discharged 1945, 2Lt, bombadier, navigator.

Just a note to introduce myself and give you a little info. My name is JOHN E BURNS SR. I too am a descendant of THOMAS BURNS b. 1761 and Margaret McNeil. I am descended through: STEPHEN DUNCAN BURNS b.1814, THOMAS BOLTON BURNS b.1846, JOHN CORE BURNS b.1886, THOMAS BARROWS BURNS SR b.1921. If you have visited Norma Burns' pages lately you will see the entire branch of the family tree. Also on one, I'm not sure, I think Family Search.com I noticed a mistake in one of your entries. There were two STEPHEN D BURNS'. One is from the first generation born in PA, the son of THOMAS BURNS I, the second was born to ARCHIBALD b.1802, his son was b. 1840. If I can remember correctly you had this 2nd STEPHEN D BURNS listed in the previous generation(son of THOMAS I).

Now, just a little info, on my branch. The 1st STEPHEN'S son THOMAS BOLTON BURNS b. 22 Jan 1846, served in the civil war with Co K, 103rd Pa Reg Vol Inf, Oct 1861 and was transferred to Veterans Reserve Corps (for medical) in Mar of 1864, less than one month before the entire Regiment was captured at the fall of Plymouth, NC. I now have the Soldier's Memorial for his unit.

As you can see I can definitely rattle on. But, I would really enjoy hearing from you, and see about obtaining a copy of your book, history was one of my favorites, and I LOVE Civil War info! (The book, ANTHONY - BURNS and Allied Families can be obtained only through Interlibrary loan. It's by me, Norma R Burns Farmilo. It doesn't include as many names as my website does. However, if you are in my direct line it includes a few things that the website doesn't include. The above line is not included in the book.

Hello Norma,

Thank you for responding.I found your site on google.com. I had typed in the word "FRAETIS". Several entries down I saw "THOMAS BURNS 1761 page 1 of 2". Once I clicked on it I scrolled down until I saw the words "QUESTA LEONE FRAETIS". She was my mother's 1st cousin. I always had the names and birthdates of JOHN ELDEN BURNS, THOS. BARROWS BURNS and the birthdate of their younger brother, but no one knew where they were. The boys are retired military and know nothing of their mother's family. I have much info. to share with that family. They can solve the mystery of what happened to their mother. I would be very grateful to you for putting me in touch with them.
Thank you. Rosemary Pohl (Portland,Oregon)P.S. Isn't the internet great?!?!

NANCY is buried with her husband, HENRY, in Mt. Joy Cemetery, next to Mt. Joy Methodist Church, 1.5 miles north of MYERS Mill homestead in Clarion County, PA, near Wentlings Corners, PA. NANCY A BURNS, who became the wife of HENRY MYERS JR, joined the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1823. Her parents did all they could to prevent her from becoming a Methodist. "Her desire" to join the church ended in her walking alone from her home on the Clarion, carrying her baby all the way, over a slippery road in winter, ten miles to a quarterly meeting held by DENNIS B DORSEY and J.M. HUDSON at Armstrong School House. She reached the place by running part of the way, just in time to hear Brother DORSEY announce for his text, "ALEXANDER, the Coppersmith, did me much harm." -- Taken from the history of the Erie Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Volume No. 2, written by Rev. J.N. Fradenburgh, and published for him by the Derrick Publishing Co. in 1907, and as rewritten in the typewritten notes of THEODORE HENRY MYERS, 1977.

NANCY A BURNS is related to the Scottish poet, ROBERT BURNS. -- MARIAN MYERS. She was married to Henry MYERS Jr. (son of Henry MYERS Sr. and MARY SARAH STROBLE) on Jan 28 1818. Married January 28, 1812. -- Bible, Paper #3. Married in 1818 [which may be the right year, given that the first child was born in 1819 and 1812 means NANCY was only 12 years old when married]. -- TOM BURNS. Married January 28, 1819. -- MYERS family tree

All the children of HENRY MYERS and NANCY BURNS listed by T.H. MYERS match the list of TOM BURNS. -- T.H. MYERS, TOM BURNS.

"When our ancestors came here this [Clarion County] was part of Venango Co., and it was a vast wilderness. Earliest settlements were made in (1802-3-4.) Clarion Co. was not organized until 1840. They were an honest, upright, God-fearing optimistic people. Each one had a piece of wood; and cleared it, built log houses with fireplaces outside (now we have them inside), log barns and the various outhouses.

I tell you it was labor to grub the second growth, chop the big trees, roll and burn the big logs. I remember my Father telling me of Grandfather chopping the logs into cord wood and burning it to make charcoal. In 1850 they sold it to the Keating Furnace for one dollar a cord. At that time practically all farming and hauling was done with oxen and the roads were just trails. All grain was sowed by hand. The grain was cut with the sickle, and then some one invented the grain-cradle, and that was a faster and better way to cut it.

The old settlers were a social set. They would assist each other in a pinch, and were neighborly. If anybody would butcher a hog or a sheep, their neighbors got a portion of the fresh meat, and all were happy.

They had what they called folics, log-rollings, corn husking parties, barn raisings, and for the lady of the house, there were apple parings, quilting bees, barn dances and square dances.

Instead of making New Year's calls [as] 'my lady' now does, the men would go in companies from house to house, commencing at ten to eleven o'clock P.M. and stand by the door and fire a volley from their flintlock squirrel rifles - be invited in to apples and cider, and so go through the neighborhood shooting the old year out and the new year in." -- WHITLING family tree.
HENRY MYERS Jr. was born on Mar 14 1799 in MD. HENRY MYERS, JR. was born in Maryland. -- 1860 Census. HENRY MYERS, JR. was born March 14, 1799, in Maryland. -- Family Bible, T.H. MYERS, Tombstone. "HENRY MYERS JR was born near Alum Rock, Pa. in 1799." -- Old paper #10. "HENRY JUNIOR Thursday March 14 - 1799." -- Old paper #1, Old paper #11. He died on Nov 8 1885 in Beaver Township, PA, Clarion Co. His will is recorded in Clarion Co., Will Book D, page 57, and dated 16 Nov. 1885. He was buried after Nov 8, 1885 in Wentlings Corners, PA, Mt. Joy Cemetery. HENRY is buried next to his wife, Nancy, in the Mt. Joy Cemetery, next to the Mt. Joy Methodist Church, 1.5 miles north of the Myers Mill homestead in Clarion County, PA. HENRY Myers Jr. was a child of HENRY and SARAH MYERS. The MYERS Post Office, which was located in Venango [since divided into Venango and Clarion] County and operated by Henry Myers, Jr., started on January 3, 1831 and closed May 20, 1843.

The name was then changed to Jefferson Furnace, opened on May 20, 1843 and continued until August 8, 1872. The Blairs Corners Post Office was then opened on August 8, 1872; it closed on January 31, 1940. -- History of WENTLINGS, p. 64. A Henry Myers was listed as one of the customers of King & Heeter General Store in Monroe, PA in 1855-1858. -- History of Wentlings, p. 193. In the 1860 Census, while aged 61 and 60 respectively, Henry and Nancy were listed as having only one child, then 18. HENRY'S occupation was listed as a miller. Subject: John Henry Myers

I am interested in the name JOHN HENRY MYERS from your website. My grandfather is named JOHN HENRY MYERS. I do not know his exact year of birth. 1847 is very reasonable as he fought as a teenager in the Civil War from the state of Pennsylvania. Our family Bible lists NANCY as his sister, no age given. He is buried at the Vancouver Barracks Cemetery in the state of Washington, and his death date is 21 November 1920. He lost a digit in the war, and from my searching it could have been from service with an artillery unit.

We know so little of him since he was aged when my father, JOSEPH POST MYERS, was born in 1915. He may have been 64 when my JOE'S sister, HARRIET MYERS, was born in 1912. From his later years we have a picture of him farming in Orchards, Washington.

I am in the process of building a file of all MYERS who served in the Civil War from the state of Pennsylvania. It is done except for researching for any additional names not in Bates. There are very few JOHN MYERS in Bates and roughly three that seem reasonable. I am searching for his regiment and that will help considerably when found.

JOHN HENRY MYERS had a son named HENRY MYERS who joined the U.S. Calvary in the 1880s. I met him when I was a young boy, though at the time I didn’t have genealogy searching in mind.

JOHN HENRY MYERS was married more than once, the last time to GRACE REMICK, from which marriage came my father. I do not know the name of his first wife. JOHN HENRY MYERS may have had other brothers as a TOM and OLIVER are mentioned, as well as a BILL and HAMILTON BEATTY, indicating his father died and his mother remarried.

Whenever I have more locating information I am sending for JOHN HENRY MYERS military and pension files from the National Archives. I hope I am able to add to your information. Any clues you have will be much appreciated.

The below is the quote of interest from your website, wherein I underlined the name: 3. HENRY SINGREE (SINGRY) MYERS born Aug 5, 1821 on Sunday at sunset (Family Bible) died Aug 30 1855. HENRY SINGREE MYERS was a child of HENRY MYERS JR and NANCY BURNS. He was married to MARTHA GIRTS after 1833. MARTHA GIRTS born Dec 18 1821/29 died after 1848. 1848 was date of birth of last child. HENRY SINGREE MYERS married MARTHA GIRTS. -- GALE MYERS.

HENRY SINGREE (SINGRY)) MYERS and MARTHA GIRTS had the following children: i. JOHN HENRY MYERS born on May 25, 1847, died before 1947. ii. NANCY JANE MYERS born Apr 30, 1848, died in 1934.

I just have a small tidbit of info on ELIZABETH BURNS/ALEXANDER DOWNING, apparently ELIZABETH died, her husband remarried, divorced that lady the same year, then married again. I do have quite a bit of info on the descendents of the THOMAS KING/HARRIET DOWNING marriage, but it isn`t really BURNS names. I would be glad to share if you are interested. Let me know. I suppose the other info should go on a DOWNING or KING page. I am not finding much on the KING'S, don`t know more about THOMAS BURNS than where he was born which was Davis County, Iowa. Their marriage was supposedly the first in the county, and there are still DOWNING'S there.
