Lynda,
I am surprised that Norma has not been in touch. Have you queried her directly? I suggest you info everyone in this group on every message, rather than just reply to sender. I often find that effective.
As for Irish vs. Scots, Lowell took a deep ancestry test and is R1b1b2a1a, a haplogroup found mostly in northern England and lowland Scotland. I therefore assume the others in the group also are. But whether they migrated directly from that area to America, or went in two steps via Ireland (Scots - Irish) I do not know. If the latter, they could have picked up Irish-sounding names in the process, or maybe even in America.
No, the test you describe would not work because the Y-DNA cannot be passed through a female. Does the stubborn gentleman you describe have any male relatives named Burns? I assume he has no sons, but perhaps his father had a brother who did? Or even his grandfather? That is your only hope.
Paul

Actually most of my family moved from Ohio to Iowa before some of them migrated to Missouri. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS at age 7 and age 16 is shown on the Iowa census. Many of my family members still live in Iowa.

The June 3, 1870, Census, Wright Township, Wayne Co., Iowa, page 8,lists:

The Father of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS, SAMUEL BURNS, is buried in Confidence Cemetery, South Section row 2.12, From N.W.Corner From North, To South Wayne, Iowa states that he died November 11, 1889 at the age of 71 years 8 months and 27 days. The stone also shows his wife ISABELLA WOLFORD BURNS buried there but she died in Arkansas while living with one of their daughters and there is a stone there with her name and corresponding date of birth and death there in Hiwassee, Bellville, Arkansas.

While my Grandfather B. K. BURNS was living I tried to get him to talk about the family but for what ever reason, he refused.

Lynda,
I hope you have had further communication with Linda, Norma, Richard Lee, and Dale. You all are so genetically close that you have to be related. DNA is impersonal and does not lie. Paper trails often do, but I don't see from Norma's site that it does. The trail you outlined seems clear enough.

Of course, genetic genealogy is not precise enough for use in courts, but surely that is not your objective. The very fact that BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS is a family name is evidence, as is the open knowledge of your "family scandal."

Absolute proof you never will obtain. "Beyond reasonable doubt" should be enough.
Paul

good morning, Paul,
Thank you for clarifying the dna results options..i was fairly certain of that.. Dale's family was in Missouri, mine in Iowa. About BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS being odd.. not really in this family.. first of all, my father's 1/2 sister, HELEN BURNS, was a genealogist way back, and had done a lot of work on this Burns line.
She was the daughter of the first wife of BENJAMIN BURNS', GRACE ALBEE, my father being the son of GRACE'S sister, ROSE ALBEE.

GRACE ALBEE and BENJAMIN BURNS lived next door to ROSE ALBEE and her parents in 1905. My father was born nine months later, just after GRACE died - thus, there was an affair, and a family scandal.

JAMES DIXON BURNS
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS SR
BENJAMIN GRANKLIN BURNS JR
. BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS' children with GRACE ALBEE:
1. HELEN BURNS
2. DONALD BURNS
BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS' child with ROSE ALBEE: JAMES BENJAMIN ALBEE (BURNS) - my father..
but...I couldn't prove this, despite the family stories, the adoption papers, etc.. sorry to ramble on..this is all so confusing, I know.. thanks again.

JAMES DIXON BURNS (MAGILL & MARGARET DIXON; JAS, ESQ; JOHN; JOHN B) b. 12/30/1808 Lewistown, Mifflin, PA d. 10/24/1895 Fort Dodge, Iowa m. Highland Co. Ohio to MARIA LOUISA GILBREATH b. 3/2/1918 Highland Co, Ohio d. 11/5/1901 Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Their Children are:

i. MARGARET BURNS (JAMES DIXON, MAGILL, JAMES ESQ., JOHN, JOHN B) b. 1838 m. JAMES EVANS BURNS (SAMUEL E & MARY ANN EVANS, JAMES ESQ, JOHN, JOHN B) b. 1837. [JAMES EVANS BURNS is a brother to my EVELINE M BURNS b. 3/22/1833 Lewistown, Mifflin Co PA, daughter of SAMUEL E BURNS & MARY ANN EVANS].

ii. EVELINE MARBLE BURNS (see Mike Short's comment at the bottom) m. THOMAS FEAR BURNS b. 8/8/1828 PA d. 10/30/1811 Cass Co Iowa (says EnidGillA@aol.com)

ENID GILL says that she lives near Rowley, Iowa in Buchanan County. It's about 30 miles North of Cedar Rapids. But "I grew up in Southwest Iowa, the town of Anita, in Cass County. My husband and I are retired school teachers, and taught various places in Iowa, but for about 30 years here in Buchanan Co. before retiring".

My BURNS line, says ENID GILL (EnidGilIA@aol.com), came to Iowa by 1859. EVELINE MARBLE BURNS (ii) & THOMAS FEAR BURNS (my great grandparents) were married in Shelby County, Ohio on 29 October 1858. In 1859 they were living in Delaware Co., Iowa where my grandfather, ORIN PERRY BURNS was born on 17 Oct 1859. They can be found in the 1860 census for Delaware Co. in Delhi Twp, enumerated on 26 July 1860. They apparently traveled to that area from Ohio with others of the BURNS line, including the JAMES DIXON BURNS family.

After living in Delaware Co. for a while, JAMES DIXON BURNS and his family moved on West to Webster Co., IA in the Fort Dodge area. This included EVELINE BURNS & brother, JAMES EVANS BURNS who married MARGARET BURNS. More BURNS cousins marrying!!!

THOMAS FEAR BURNS & his wife EVELINE MARBLE BURNS had another child in Eastern Iowa. RACHEL BELLE BURNS was born 10 March 1861 in Jackson Co., Iowa, evidently not far South of where they were living in Delaware Co. By 1869 they had moved to Cass Co., Iowa. In the 1870 census the family is shown in Cass County, in what was then known as Turkey Grove Township, 25 July 1870.

Both THOMAS FEAR BURNS & EVELINE MARBLE BURNS give Pennsylvania as their state of birth. THOMAS & EVELINE BURNS are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Anita, Cass Co., Iowa. Their tombstones (and family info) have their birth and death dates.
EVELINE MARBLE BURNS Mar 22,1833 - Oct 30, 1886.
THOMAS FEAR BURNS Aug 8, 1828 - Oct. 30, 1871.

In the 1880 census EVELINE MARBLE BURNS, then a widow is listed in Cass Co., Lincoln Twp. (south of Anita, IA) with son ORIN PERRY BURNS, age 20, daughter RACHEL BELLE BURNS, age 19, plus a niece, JANIE BURNS, age 15. This niece appears to be the daughter of EVELINE's brother, JAMES EVANS BURNS, and apparently was visiting them temporarily.

ORIN PERRY BURNS, my grandfather, married my grandmother, EMMA SCHOLL, daughter of JOSEPH LEO SCHOLL & CATHERINE KUNZIG SCHOLL, on 9 Jan 1889 in Atlantic, Iowa at the residence of the officiating minister, Rev. C. W. BLODGETT. They had 4 children:

i. GRACE EVELYN BURNS b. 10 Apr 1893
ii. THOMAS LEO BURNS (my father) b. 5 Nov 1898
iii. WINIFRED MARY BURNS b. 22 Mar 1904
iv. STELLA MILDRED BURNS b. 16 Nov 1895 d. 21 Nov 1896

Grandpa ORIN PERRY BURNS (ENID GILL'S brother is also ORIN) died on Sept 1927.

Orin's sister, RACHEL BELLE BURNS married JAMES J BREWER on 12 Feb, 1882. They also lived in Cass Co., where she died 20 Nov 1920. RACHEL BELLE BURNS & JAMES J BREWER had one daughter, RUBY EVELYN BREWER, b. 20 June 1884.

Back to Ohio, 1850 census for Miami Co, Washington Twp. SAMUEL E BURNS & wife MARY ANN EVANS are listed with children:

1) HUGH BURNS age 19 b. abt 1831 PA
2) EVELINE MARBLE BURNS age 17 b. abt 1833 PA
3) JAMES E(EVANS) BURNS age 13 b. abt 1837
4) SAMUEL W BURNS age 11 b. abt 1839
5) LIBERTY MCGILL BURNS age 7 b. abt 1843
6) born in Ohio
7) born in Ohio
8) born in Ohio

So there you have my BURNS line as they came to Iowa. I still cannot connect THOMAS FEAR BURNS into a BURNS family. Every time I think I might have it, I get proven wrong. Family lore said that EVELINE MARBLE BURNS & THOMAS FEAR BURNS were cousins of some sort, and I am sure that they were. Because of the alternating names of THOMAS and ORIN (my brother was named ORIN also).

I have thought he might be connected to the JONATHAN BURNS line out of Susquehanna Co., PA, as he had sons named THOMAS BURNS and ORREY BURNS. But it is so hard to tie in in the 1830's when families were not all listed in the census.

2) ELIZABETH L BURNS b. 1839

3) JANE ANN BURNS b. 1841 married LEVI R ROTH

4) WILLIAM BUTLER BURNS b. 1843 m. EMMA b. 1847

5) MARY E BURNS b. 1845 m. T. S. KNAPP

6) JAMES BURNS b. 1848 d. in the Civil War 1864 in Rome, Georgia

7) BENJAMIN F(FRANKLIN) BURNS b. 9/2/1850 Laporte Co Indiana m. HATTIE INEZ PIERCE b. 1856

8) ALICE C BURNS b. 1852

9) EVA BURNS b. 1857 m. FRED M CORNELL

10) ANGELINE BURNS b. 1860.

SAMUEL BURNS b. 9/17/1754 d. 12/1/1837 married 7/26/1781 to MARY SEASLY. Their children are:

1) SAMUEL BURNS

2) Z(G)ABRIEL BURNS b. 6/28/1782 10:00 P.M.

8) & 9) JOHN & MARY BURNS (Twins) b. 3/29/1796 6:00 a.m.

SAMUEL BURNS b. 1754 York Co PA d. 12/1/1837 m. MARU (MARY?). While residing in the York District (in South Carolina Roster pg. 126) he served three months under CAPTAIN WILLIAM BYERS, COLONEL THOMAS NEEL AND GENERAL WILLIAMS during 1778. Thereafter, he volunteered under COLONEL MOFFETT AND COLONEL BRATTON.

In 1779 and in 1780 he was in the cavalry and was wounded by a bail (ball?) passing through his body just above his hips.

THOMAS BURNS enlisted in the Third Regiment (in South Carolina Roster p. 126) on 2/10/1779 under CAPTAIN JOHN C SMITH. S.C. H.& G, V, 148; .A.853.

PETER BURNS (R20205)b. 1733 Ireland served in the Third Regiment (in South Carolina Roster p 125) under CAPTAIN CHARLES HEATLEY. In addition he was in SUMTER'S brigade after the fall of Charleston, Salley, Doc., p 6; S.C.H.&G., II, 188; III, 73.

JOHN BURNS m. MARY was killed in service. Annuitants Claims (in South Carolina Roster p 125)

JAMES BURNS served under CAPTAINS JOHN MCCLURE and HUGH KNOX during 1780. (in South Carolina Roster p 125) A.A.930; Z44B; C.S.

MAJOR LIBERTY M BURNS (probably the son of ROBERT BURNS & the grandson of JAMES BURNS ESQ) came to White County, Indiana in 1839. He was born in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania June 5, 1810 and died in Monticello March 27, 1879. In 1849 he crossed the plains to California in the search for gold. In 1843 he united with the Presbyterian Church at Monticello and retained his membership therein until his death.

In November 1837 he was joined in marriage with MISS AMANDA GRIGGS of Preble County, Ohio and to this union was born two children, a son and a daughter.

NORMA,

I don't think I can add much to the DIXON name in the BURNS family beyond what I gave you before. What I do have came originally from PAUL BURNS, JR. of Pennsylvania. Two sons of JAMES BURNS ESQUIRE married DIXON sisters.

MAGILL BURNS (b. 1769) married MARGARET DIXON (b. 1770), daughter of JAMES DIXON and MARY CLARK. They had a son named JAMES DIXON BURNS (above) who migrated to Indiana and then to Iowa. MAGILL'S brother, JAMES BURNS, JR. (the General) married MARY DIXON.

PAUL BURNS, JR'S notes say her parents were JAMES DIXON-DICKSON-DIXSON and MARY CLARK. JAMES and MARY had a son named DIXON A BURNS, sometime spelled DICKSON A BURNS. This name seems to vary in spelling, as do many. There were both DIXON and CLARK surnames in Mifflin Co. still in the mid 1800's, but I do not have any clues as to how any are related.

I checked the LDS Family search to see what I could turn up, but found nothing really reliable. There is an IGI marriage for JAMES DIXON to MARY CLARK that says about 1779, of Pennsylvania. This does not seem at all correct to me.

Another ancestral file names JAMES DICKSON born abt 1740, of Pennsylvania, married abt 1760 to MARY CLARK b. abt 1740. Only one child is listed, FRANCES DICKSON b. abt 1765 in PA. Looks like someone has submitted information, but is unclear on all the data. I never can get the LDS site to provide me with the name of the submitter. ENID

Hello,
MIKE SHORT gave me your website. My father JAMES BENJAMIN ALBEE, was the illegitimate son of ROSE ELECTA ALBEE BURNS. She was married to BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS JR.

My father was born 11 June, 1906 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. The family story is that BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS JR. was the father. He was married to the older sister of ROSE, GRACE ALBEE, at the time of his birth.

I would love to learn more about this family.

LYNDA MINTER wildfree@whidbey.com

BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS appears several places in this website. Please check Indiana, Tennessee, & Missouri as well as others.

My name is MICHAEL SHORT and I am currently a resident of Des Moines IA. I am a descendent of JAMES DIXON BURNS (born 1808) that you describe on your site. I have been looking for relations for a long time, ever since my father showed me the family plot just north of what used to be Tara, IA.

Sent: Wednesday, December 20, 2000 1:23 PM
Dad told me that the BURNS relatives had a few people who could play anything at all, and I have somewhere a picture of four or five of them playing some stringed instruments and a clarinet sometime in the '40's, I think, in a room at EVA BURNS' house (she was my Dad's grandmother, and the daughter of MARGARET and JAMES EVANS BURNS).

My brother played trumpet, and then horn, for quite some time, and our youngest brother played cello. Dad strummed guitar (it's too much to say he really played the thing) and my son played clarinet and alto sax, and now plays guitar and bass. When we cleaned out the house this summer (Dad died in July of '98, and Mom died last February) we found an old accordion that HAD to have been in the house since we moved there in 1965, but I had never seen it before. An expert told us that Montgomery Ward sold thousands of those between 1920 and 1950. I think Dad tried to learn how to play, and when he didn't, put it out of sight (and out of mind).

It doesn't really take a lot of practice for each gig (playing the tuba), just a lot of consist daily practice. Which I guess I can start now - I think my college age son just got up!

Yours, Mike Short

JAMES DIXON BURNS, his wife MARIA GILBREATH BURNS and their son-in-law JAMES EVANS BURNS are buried there (North of Tara IA). We could not figure out where JAMES EVANS BURNS came from, and the story was that he and his wife, MARGARET BURNS were cousins, but we could not confirm anything. I posted an inquiry when I finally got on-line at the genforum.com site, and ENID GILLIHAN spotted it and was kind enough yesterday to e-mail me with information, including the address of your site.

MARGARET BURNS and JAMES E BURNS indeed had children:
i. ESTHER E BURNS b. abt 1863
ii. JANE BURNS b. abt 1865
iii. ANNA E BURNS b. abt 1869
iv. CARRIE BURNS b. abt 1872 m. FRANK JONES in Fort Dodge - one child known, GUY JONES
v. JAMES DIXON BURNS b. abt 1874
vi. EVA MARIE BURNS b. abt 29 Oct 1876
vii. WILLIAM GARFIELD BURNS "GUY" b. November 1880.

EVA MARIE BURNS was my great grandmother, and raised my father She even lived with us in the early to mid 1960's. I wish I had known the questions to ask back then!

EVA MARIE BURNS had a child, my grandmother. She was JENNIE LEONA "LEE" BURNS b. 6/1900. The father would not marry EVA BURNS, and she took him to court in August 1900 and won a $5,000 settlement. The lawyers got half.

The child was known as "LEE" BURNS. In December 1923, she married CLARENCE A SHORT in Fort Dodge. LEE BURNS SHORT died in March 1938. CLARENCE A SHORT moved to Florida and remarried. LEE and CLARENCE had two sons.

i. DUANE A SHORT b. 2 Mar 1925 d. 2 Jul 1998 m. EUNICE A DROWN b. 2 Mar 1953, and the result was MICHAEL D SHORT b. 30 Oct 1953

ii. DONALD SHORT, b. 13 Nov 1930.

DAVID A SHORT and JAMES DIXON SHORT seem to be the children of either DONALD SHORT but it is unclear the way this was originally sent to me. DAVID A. SHORT, b. 4 Sept 1955; and JAMES DIXON SHORT, b. 27 Nov 1959. So that's how we fit into this family.

I can send more information as wanted or required, and I live only about 10 minutes away from the state historical library. Feel free to contact me at shortuba@aol.com

Thanks for your effort in putting up this site-just glancing at it, I can see that it is very informative and helpful.

I guess on an earlier message, I wasn't very clear. It says that possibly DAVID A SHORT and JAMES DIXON SHORT might be children of DONALD SHORT. They are not. They are my two younger brothers, so they are children of DUANE SHORT. The "lost" folks are the decendents of GARFIELD BURNS, the youngest child of MARGARET and JAMES EVANS BURNS. They were only lost in the sense that we did not know where they had ended up. They are mostly in Council Bluffs, IA, although a few are elsewhere. We hope to gather them up for a reunion of some sort in the Fort Dodge area this summer.

Hello Norma,
My name is NATHANIEL DAVID BURNS. I have been exhaustively searching anything and everything regarding my family roots. Any information you may have would be highly appreciated on the following.

My g grandfather BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS was born abt. 1848 in Greenburg, Ind. He was married to SARAH EMMALINE HARRIS abt. 1877 She was also from Greenburg, Ind. on or abt. Dec. 18, 1852. I believe they met in Indiana and moved to Jackson Co. Kansas where:

1. STELLA OLDILA BURNS was born June 15, 1878 died Sep. 22nd 1918 Fowler, Meade, Kansas
2. LILLIAN L BURNS was born Aug. 25th, 1883 also in Jackson Co. died Feb 2nd, 1978 in Holton, Jackson, Kansas
3. WILLIAM A BURNS was born Mar. 26th, 1890
4. HOMER GILBERT BURNS was born Oct. 10th, 1892 in Bunkerhill, Russell, Kansas
5. HERMAN BENJAMIN BURNS my grandfather was born Nov. 9th, 1894 in Denison, Jackson, Kansas and died in Cedar Rapids, Iowa Feb. 11th, 1988

My grandfather was the last born to my g grandfather before he passed away sometime around 1897
It was at this time, from what I am led to believe my g grandfather had a brother by the name of JOHN T BURNS who was born July 4th, 1854 somewhere in North Carolina.

Upon BENJAMIN FRANKLIN BURNS'death, JOHN T BURNS stepped in and married my g grandmother on Dec. 17th 1897.

They had one son:
1. MILBURN "PETE" BURNS born around 1901 in Holton, Jackson, Kansas and died abt. 1970.

I do not know as to the true accuracy of everything here. What is confusing to me is the supposed fact that my g grandfather BENJAMIN was older than his brother JOHN T but JOHN T was born in North Carolina after BENJAMIN who was born in Indiana. Hopefully, you may have ran across some info regarding the above.

Thank you, NATE BURNS

Norma - Hello again! It's been a few years since I've sent you anything.

You seem to indicate that EVELINE M BURNS is a sister to MARGARET, daughter of JAMES DIXON BURNS. She is not - she was the daughter of SAMUEL BURNS, and a sister to JAMES EVANS BURNS, who married MARGARET. It's very confusing (too many cousins involved) but EVELINE belongs with the SAMUEL BURNS who was a son of JAMES BURNS, ESQ., not with the descendants of JAMES DIXON BURNS.
