MOSES BAIRD

MOSES BAIRD lived in Fredericktown, Madison Co., Missouri. It is speculated where he came from and who his parents were. This website was started to try to find these answers in a more organized way. One reference says that he came to Missouri in 1801 from Ireland. He may have been born in Ireland or possibly his parents were but I don't think he came directly to Missouri. MOSES BAIRD owned a Hotel in Fredericktown MO.

Wives of MOSES BAIRD and/or MOSES BAIRD JR: POLLY married 1/23/1824; MARY (Elizabeth)(ARNETT), the widow of Moses, married 3/20/1829, b. 6/10/1799 d. 10/9/1859; FANNY TAYLOR m. 5/2/1858 Iron Co MO (from Missouri Pioneer Vol.2); ELECTRA (SNOW?)b. 10/8/1789 (from notes & Queries 8/9/1935, 26 d. 1864.

From Cemetery in Fredericktown MO: MARY (Mary Elizabeth Arnett) wife of MOSES BAIRD 6/10/1799-10/9/1859; married 3/20/1829.

msheffield@ddpo.com wrote: I have a copy of the BAIRD'S - in Fredericktown Cemetery - don't have it with me here at work. I'll look at it tonight - see if I have any more info - on ELECTRA BAIRD.

I did find MOSES BAIRD in the 1830 Census in Madison County (Fredericktown) - but since they only list the heads of the household - I didn't have the children's names - so I appreicate that. I don't see MATILDA JANE BAIRD there in the census - there aren't any 15 year old females listed(I changed her birthdate to 5/1/1819 so she would have been 10 or 11. She died 5/6/1879 in Fredericktown, Madison, MO). Was she already married then? Another discrepancy we've had about MOSES - is when did he die?

Goodspeed's Book - says 1853 - from Cholera. Another source - my sister found said 1833 (1853?). I searched at the library and couldn't find MOSES in the 1840 or 1850 Census records for Missouri. He also isn't listed in the cemetery with his wife there at Fredericktown.??? I know he died in Cape Girardeau and I speculated that they burned his body, but I'm not sure.

The children of MOSES BAIRD were identified from a deed in Madison Co, Missouri which distributed his estate.
MOSES BAIRD'S CHILDREN (not necessarily in order):

1) ELIZABETH BAIRD m. BENJAMIN F REYNOLDS
2) CAPT RUFUS BAIRD Bricklayer (age 26) b. 8/16/1832 d. 5/27/1911 m. JANE (CARUTHERS ANTHONY, widow)

Children of RUFUS BAIRD and JANE:

i. WILLIAM BAIRD
ii. MILTON BAIRD
iii. RUFUS BAIRD JR b. 4/10/1871 d. 2/7/1900 Will probated in Madison Co MO 6/3/1902 m. 1859 to LEVINIA MAZE b. 11/13/1837 d. 5/28/1879 English & German descent

3) MOSES M BAIRD JR
4) ALVAN BAIRD m. MARIA B
5) WASHINGTON BAIRD
6) ROBERT BAIRD
7) JOHN A(RNETT) BAIRD b. 1817 MO m. 1850 Hempstead Co., Arkansas to MELVINA WILLIAMS

It looks like JOHN ARNETT BAIRD came back from Arkansas to Missouri when his father died. - I guess to help his mother. I went to the Mormon church and requested MOSES' will - what I got was a court appearance - concerning MARY ELIZABETH (executrix of MOSES' will) and JOHN ARNETT BAIRD - her agent - it talked about her receiving $3,000 a year for support of the younger children and also - JOHN ARNETT BAIRD received $17.00 for some expense involved with handling the family business. The lady at the church suggested I contact the Missouri state office - and ask if they have an actual copy of the will. I haven't done that yet.

ELVIRA ARNET dau of JOHN ARNET (probably family of ELIZABETH ARNET wife of MOSES BAIRD) settled in Madison Co MO in 1840. She married ALEXANDER NIFONG. Several ARNET'S were prominent in Madison Co. MO.

JAMES ARNETT was an Assessor in 1857-58. JOHN ARNET witnessed the will of my ancestor JAMES C BERRYMAN husband of MATILDA BAIRD on 3/21/1872.

I thought MOSES' wife was MARY. Then I thought ELIZABETH ARNETT might have been a previous wife. Now you (MAE SHEFFIELD) called her MARY ELIZABETH ARNET from the probate paper you found.
Perhaps we can look in PA, MA, & OH for MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT.

The MOSES BAIRD b. abt 1786 in Fayette Co PA m. a MARY. Arnett's were from Fayette Co OH. Can we find a marriage for them or perhaps children?

More children from the distribution of MOSES BAIRD (of Frederickstown MO) estate: 8) HARTSHORN BAIRD m. ARAMITTA

MATILDA JANE BAIRD b. abt 1815 MO d. bet. 1853 & 1860 MO m. 1st 1/22/1835 to NATHAN B HARRIS m. 2nd 5/18/1845 Fredericktown MO to JAMES C (COLEMAN) BERRYMAN b. 9/1/1806 Isle of Wight VA d. 3/1882 Fredericktown MO.

They had 8 children. JAMES C BERRYMAN had seven children when he married MATILDA.

(For more on her children get the book, The ANTHONY, BURNS & Allied Families by NORMA R (BURNS) FARMILO (1986). It can be obtained through Interlibrary Loan.

According to History of S.E. Missouri by Goodspeed, MOSES BAIRD came to Missouri in 1801. On July 12, 1819 MOSES, along with 14 other men, was indicted on charges of assault and battery, was found guilty and fined. He owned a hotel in Fredericktown MO and in 1827 the town was incorporated with MOSES BAIRD being one of the original members of the board of Trustees.

MOSES BAIRD was found numerous times in the Madison Co., MO Abstract of Deeds microfilm. The following transactions were made by MOSES BAIRD:

Feb 8, 1823 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN BURDETTE
Feb 18, 1823 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN BURDETTE
Feb 29, 1823 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN BURDETTE
Sep 2, 1825 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from EDMUND RODGERS
Mar 20, 1829 MOSES BAIRD sold land to ELIZABETH STEPHENSON
Dec 6, 1829 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN BURDETTE
Feb 10, 1832 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN ROBINSON
Apr 6, 1833 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOHN BURDETTE
Feb 13, 1834 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from GEORGE SENTEE
Apr 3, 1847 MOSES BAIRD purchased land from JOSIAS BERRYMAN

MOSES BAIRD showed up in the U. S. Census (1830) in - Madison Co., MO
MOSES BAIRD'S exact date of death is not really known, but we can safely surmise that it was either 1848 or 1849. According to the History of Goodspeed, he died in 1853 of cholera, in Cape Girardeau Co., MO, but we know that date is NOT correct since his will was probated in 1850. Assuming he did in fact die of cholera, we know that Cholera epidemics occured in the U.S. during the years 1848 & 1849. Since he last purchased land in 1847 and his will was probated in 1850, we know that his date of death had to be between 1848-49.

Census: 1830, U.S. Census - Madison Co., MO - MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT BAIRD was found in the Madison County, MO Abstract of Deeds microfilm. She sold land to B F REYNOLDS (husband of daughter ELIZABETH BAIRD) on Dec 8, 1853...presumably after MOSES BAIRD (her husband) died.

STORY OF RUFUS BAIRD AND OTHERS

Democrat News 1950's??

THE OLD GREEN BRICK By CLARICE B WELKER, Historian

There is always something fascinating in the razing of an old building. This is particularly true in the "old green brick" recently known as the Price Dress Shop. It was located at the Northeast corner of Mine La Motte and College Avenues until it was torn down to make way for a used car lot.

The building was erected by RUFUS BAIRD. He was a son of MOSES BAIRD and MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT (who was a daughter of JOHN ARNETT.) These two families were very influential in the early days of Madison County.

The BAIRD'S made their own bricks a block south on Water Street, known today as the lots back of the homes of Mrs. FRANK RUTH, Mrs. E P FRANCIS and VAL ADAMSON. At the time the brickyard was there, the creek ran down the west side of the road across these lots.

RUFUS BAIRD was a very busy man, but he had plenty of help from some of his relatives. Namely, his brothers JOHN (BAIRD), ROBERT (BAIRD), MOSES (BAIRD) JR., HARSHORN (BAIRD),and a cousin DUNCAN ARNETT. He also had help from his wife's brothers BEVERLY L. MAZE, FELIX J MAZE, BINUM MAZE and BARTON J. MAZE. Some of these men were carpenters as well as brick masons.

When I first knew this old house, there was no sidewalk on the north side of College Avenue. We were intrigued with the maze of pipes in the basement. After asking many questions we learned that water was being piped into this house from a big spring in the center of the street, up College Avenue some 200 feet west, in front of the home of JOHN VALLE and wife, REBECCA OVERFIELD (relatives of KATHERINE SLAUGHTER), now the location of the Baptist Church.

Town Creek had many names; Shell Spring Branch, Tong Creek, Toler and Town Creek. At College Avenue there was no culvert and we used a narrow foot bridge on the south side of the street. There was a heavy wire cable to hold to as a banister.

The Marvin College dormitory girls always had to march in line. We would try to get in step before we got on the bridge so it would swing. When the creek was high the water often was up to the porch of the first house. We had to use (what we called Rocky Mountain) Newberry Street a foot bridge over the creek.

RUFUS BAIRD had married LOVINA MAZE (the daughter of WILLIAM and EVELINE MAZE.) They had three sons: RUFUS (BAIRD) Jr., WILLIAM (BAIRD) and MILTON (BAIRD). After the death of this first wife, RUFUS married the widow of MARK ANTHONY. She had two children: IATE (ANTHONY) (Mrs. GEORGE P. HERZINGER) and Dr. CARUTHERS ANTHONY. Mrs. ANTHONY was born JANE CARUTHERS, the daughter of DAVID LOONEY CARUTHERS and MARY DUBOIS.

This marriage brings up a history of the big brick house south of the Stephens Store. RUFUS BAIRD built this house also. Other houses made from the BAIRD brick were numerous. Among them is my own house, 205 South Main; the Methodist Parsonage - for his sister ELIZABETH BAIRD and her husband BENJAMIN REYNOLDS; the old brick house on the Cobalt property, built for another sister MATILA J(JANE) (the widow of NATHAN B. HARRIS) and her second husband, JUDGE JAMES C(COLEMAN) BERRYMAN. Berryman.

The big brick house south of the bridge over Little St. Francis was started for MOSES BAIRD but he died before it was completed. His wife (widow), MARY ELIZABETH BAIRD, was the daughter of JOHN ARNETT and lived there for several years.

Sometime it might be interesting to discuss the original city limits since we have explained that the eastern limit was a street 50 foot wide. It ran from Saline Creek on the north to the old log school and church house and graveyard on the south, this was called Cooks Water Street.

In other words: The New Era Bank and all other buildings on the east side of Mine La Motte Avenue would have been out of the city limits.

Dear Norma,
I found your email on an internet web site about the BAIRD family. My name is WILLIAM SUBJACK. My wife JOYCE SUBJACK and I are collectors of needlework samplers. We have come into possession of an 1854 needlework by an "EMILICIA BAIRD". She also indicates on her sampler that it was completed in Linden, MO and that she was 11 years old at the time (meaning she was born in 1842 or 1843).

We have tried for over a year without success to locate her genealogically and I am writng to you to see if you can give me any hints on where to look. We wondered if perhaps she used a nickname in the records - EMMA or ??? - but have still found nothing.

Given the Westward migration at the time she may have been born in another state and moved to Missouri to make the sampler but we have still found nothing.

The only information I could find so far is that RAY'S father was EDWARD J BAIRD (I forgot to add that EDWARD BAIRD'S wife was named GRACE MYRTLE VAUL), but I am trying to find out more about RAY, and also who EDWARD'S parent's were, but seem to be hitting a brick wall.
The family tree is in Missouri, Illinois, Tennessee, Indiana, and so on..any help or suggestions would be sincerely appreciated. Thank you and GOD Bless you!

Subject: BAIRD Family Genealogy

My name is DONALD RAY BAIRD II. I am trying to locate info on my ancestry and I believe that my gggrandfather MOSES C BAIRD came from the Missouri area to Woodward, Oklahoma. His wife's name was VIOLET HAUGHT or HOYT. MOSES C BAIRD was born in 1856 and died in 1928 in Woodward OK. He had one son that I know of so far: FRANK SAMUEL BAIRD, my ggrandfather, who was b. 1883 d. 1973 Woodward OK. They are both buried with their wives in the Mooreland cemetery in Woodward OK. If you have any info that could help me I would appreciate it very much...Thank You
