JOHN C ARNETT Sr.(THOMAS) settled in Madison county in 1814. The ARNETT'S came from Kentucky -
I believe. I'll get more info and send to you on them.
JOHN C. ARNETT (THOMAS) 1771 - 1840 had several children (see below) - some married and lived in Fredericktown, MO. In the Madison County Cemetery book - Volume II - we found.....
BAIRD, MARY (ELIZABETH) (JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) - Born 10 June 1799 - Died 9 Oct 1854 - daughter of JOHN C ARNETT Sr. and ELIZABETH DUNCAN
*MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT (JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) married MOSES BAIRD SR. I don't have a marriage date for them.
MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT BAIRD (JOHN C Sr; THOMAS) was found in the Madison County, MO Abstract of Deeds microfilm. She sold land to B.F. REYNOLDS (a son-in-law) on Dec 8, 1853...presumably after MOSES BAIRD (her husband) died.
I can't recall all the details (I think my sister, LINDA, found where MOSES was married to someone else - I don't think she had a name for the first wife - but I think there were a couple of children by the first marriage - before MOSES married MARY ELIZABETH ARNETT. To complicate matters, sometimes they call her MARY and sometimes it's ELIZABETH and there are children with those names as well, so it gets very confusing.
The ARNETT'S (most of them , that is) moved on to Arkansas - and our ancestor, JOHN ARNETT BAIRD (?)(JOHN; Thomas), went with them. As a matter of fact, he married his wife, MARY MELVINA in Arkansas.
MAE SHEFFIELD mshhefield@baroid.com or msheffiedl@ddpo.com
Several ARNET'S were prominent in Madison Co. MO. JAMES ARNETT was an Assessor in 1857-58. JOHN ARNET witnessed the will of my ancestor, JAMES C (COLEMAN) BERRYMAN, husband of MATILDA BAIRD on 3/21/1872.

I was doing some research on the Internet on the ARNETT surname. I found your page and began reading the info. I am wondering if you or the lady named LINDA that you refer to at the bottom of the website may know any info. about a connection between the ARNETT surname and the Cherokee Indians? I have a cousin who is researching the possible connection between the ARNETT family of southeastern Missouri and the Cherokee tribe.
I would appreciate hearing from you or someone else who is interested in this. My Great Grandmother was IDA ELMYRA ARNETT (DUNCAN; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) and she married WILLIAM RICHARD KING. IDA'S father was DUNCAN ARNETT, sometimes spelled DUNKLIN. Thanks, PHYLLIS

Subject: ARNETT family of Missouri AGAIN
I am currently using my business PC which does not have my family geneaology data, but I am responding with a "few" notes in regard to the ARNETT & KING families to which I am related to.
DUNKLIN ARNETT (JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) has been a name that always stood out to me since early childhood. I was fascinated with both names for some reason?? =)
After doing some research into the ARNETT surname I have discovered names, DUNCAN & DUNKLIN ARNETT. It is my opinion at this time, that DUNCAN is the correct spelling and pronunciation and the family somehow pronounced it incorrectly as DUNKLIN or census takers misspelled it. However, there is the county in southeastern Missouri known as DUNKLIN County so there may be a connection somehow.
The BAIRD surname was not familiar to me until I looked at some ARNETT notes and I found these notes written for DUNCAN ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN; THOMAS), born 4-22-1841.
DUNCAN (BENJAMIN SR.) was the son of BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ARNETT SR and wife MARGARET (no surname listed for her at this time).
The notes state- 1850 Census of Madison Co, MO. Household #355. (Sep 23, 1850) ARNETT, BENJAMIN (John C Sr; Thomas) age 57(b. abt 1793), farmer..100.00, born in KY; wife MARGARET age 47 (b. abt 1803) , born in KY; son BENJAMIN ARNETT Jr. (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 20 (b. abt 1830); JAMES ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 16 (b. abt 1834); JOHN ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 14 (b. abt 1836); JOSEPHUS ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 12(b. abt 1838); DUNKIN ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 10 (b. abt 1840); NAPOLEON ARNETT (BENJAMIN SR.; JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) age 4 (b. abt 1846).
---DUNCAN ARNETT worked in construction along with RUPHUS BAIRD & JAMES GEORGE. Some of the buildings DUNCAN ARNETT built in the Arcadia Valley in the early 1840's are now classified as historical markers by the local Historical Society.
*DUNCAN ARNETT'S brother, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ARNETT JR married MARY JANE KATO. She is known to have been 50% Native American. She lived to the age of 102 and smoked a corncob pipe. (info from CHARLES ARNETT, great great grandson of BENJAMIN ARNETT JR).
Please clue me in as to where your information of "ELIZABETH ARNETT'S (who married MOSES BAIRD) mother was a DUNCAN. fits in??
I have an ELIZABETH (DUNCAN) ARNETT (THOMAS) as living with her daughter ELVIRA (ARNETT) NIFONG (JOHN C Sr.; THOMAS) in the 1850 Census of Madison Co, MO. She was listed as age 79, and being born in VA.
My original ARNETT data begins with the couple of JOHN C ARNETT Sr. b. 1771 VA d. 4/10/1840 MO and wife ELIZABETH (DUNCAN) ARNETT born abt. 1771 in VA. They were married on October 17, 1795 in Madison Co., KY. She died after 1850.

There were two BENJAMIN DUNCAN's who had lived in Pittsylvania Co. VA in the
late 1700's. One died in 1796 in Madison Co. KY, the other between 1801 and 1807 in Fayette Co. KY. Both left a widow ELIZABETH.
BENJAMIN DUNCAN (Sr.) (ROBERT) whose will dated 5 Nov. 1796 was filed on 6 Dec. 1796 in Madison Co. KY (Will Book A, pg.134, and posting by ROSEMARY WEBB) is said to be the BENJAMIN DUNCAN from Pittsylvania Co. VA, who with his first wife SARAH (DAR records) had a son SAMUEL DUNCAN (SAMUEL DUNCAN's Rev. War Pension S12812, d. 1845 Lincoln Co. KY m. to ELIZABETH Children: JOHN DUNCAN (m. 8/20/1807 Madison Co. KY to LUCY WHITE), BENJAMIN (m. 06/13/1796 in Lincoln Co. KY to CHRISTINE BAUGHMAN,) and ELIZABETH (m. to JOHN ARNETT).
I have not been able to locate confirmation for BENJAMIN DUNCAN's "first wife SARAH" as given in the following genealogy by MRS ROBINSON, and this
may be in error or I may just not have found it.
SAMUEL DUNCAN's first wife is given as SARAH before he married MARY SAMPSON on 24 Oct. 1782 in
Pittsylvania Co. VA, and this may have caused confusion.
There is an excellent discussion of this BENJAMIN DUNCAN in the manuscript genealogy "The KY Ancestors of EMMA GOODLOE GREGORY MORROW" Vol.II, GOODLOE, WOODS, DUNCAN, WHITE; by ANN MORROW ROBINSON, 1981. This genealogy gives sources.
One BENJAMIN DUNCAN recorded 400 acres in Pittsylvania Co. VA on 4 March 1762 on the south side of Blackwater River between the lines of ---- HARTH and Stephen HARD (Record Book 1737-1770, pg.276). BENJAMIN DUNKIN had deeds recorded in Pittsylvania Co. VA Deed Book 1, pgs.104 and 352, for 229 acres of land on Black Water River which he bought on 27 May 1768 from STEPHEN
HEARD and sold on 23 Aug. 1769 to WILLIAM BEAMS. (FHL film 33,262)
Probably the same BENJAMIN DUNCAN bought 200 acres on Tomahawk Creek on 28 Aug. 1772 from WILLIAM NEALLY (Deed 3-59 on FHL film 33,263) and sold 100 acres of that land to JOSEPH ATKINS on 16 Dec. 1783 (Deed 7-217 on FHL film 33,265). About the same time, on 15 April 1783, SAMUEL DUNCAN bought 172 acres from KILLIN KREEK (Deed 7-12) which he deeded as 182 acres to BENJAMIN
DUNCAN on 19 Aug. 1783 (Deed 7-135) and which BENJAMIN DUNCAN and wife ELIZABETH sold on 24 Sept. 1784 to JEREMIAH HEZEE (Deed 8-178 on FHL film 33-266).
BENJAMIN DUNCAN on 12 Aug. 1788 bought 278 acres in Madison Co. KY on Silver Creek from LEWIS CRAIG and wife ELIZABETH of Fayette Co. "VA" (Madison Co.
KY deed A-105 on FHL film 183,283); BENJAMIN DUNCAN and wife ELIZABETH sold 52 acres of this to ROBERT GUTHRIE on 31 Oct. 1796 (Deed D-147 on FHL film
183,285). This is the BENJAMIN DUNCAN who died in Madison Co. KY shortly afterwards.
This is the BENJAMIN DUNCAN referred to on page 167 of MAUD CARTER CLEMENT'S 1929 "History of Pittsylvania Co. VA" (FHL book 975.5665 H2c), when she said
that BENJAMIN DUNCAN made his home on the Staunton River at the mouth of Blackwater, and after the Revolutionary War, he moved to Madison Co. KY
where his will was proved in 1796. Her information may have been from some of his then-living descendants, whom she named.
One BENJAMIN DUNCAN (WILLIAM) b. about 1772, son of WILLIAM DUNCAN and ROSANNA NORMAN, mar. ELIZABETH BROWNING on 28 Feb. 1793 in Culpeper Co. VA, died in Fayette Co. KY and after his death his family moved to Logan Co. KY; from the manuscript "The DUNCANS of Culpeper County, Virginia to Logan County, Kentucky" by Mrs. J. Wells Vick, Russellville, Kentucky 46804 (DAR Records,
on FHL film 870,802).
BENJAMIN DUNCAN of Culpeper Co. VA, had bought 390 acres on Panter Creek in Pittsylvania Co. VA on 29 Aug. 1791 from EMANUEL PAYNE of Lincoln Co. KY,
witnesses include JOHN DAVIS. (Pitts. Co. VA Deed Book 9, pg.162, on FHL film 33,627).
BENJAMIN DUNCAN's Will was recorded in Logan Co. KY Will Book A, pg.186 (on FHL film 364,608), dated 21 July 1801, Will of BENJAMIN DUNCAN of Fayette
Co. KY; wife ELIZABETH all personal estate during her widowhood or till my children come of age, then estate equally divided amongst my children but she shall keep as much as shall maintain her during life then equally
amongst my children after her death; if any of the children shall die before they come of age then that part divided as above; appoint wife ELIZABETH
sole executor. Wit. ABNER BROWNING, PEGGY BROWNING. Proved 17 June 1811.
Between the date of BENJAMIN DUNCAN's Will (1801) and the date it was filed for probate (1811), there was a court action recorded in Pittsylvania Co. VA
Court Order Book 12 (on FHL film 33,312):
Pg.347: Court Mar. 1807, BENJAMIN DUNCAN estate. VINCENT SHELTON pltf vs JOHN DAVIS; ELIZABETH DUNCAN, widow of BENJAMIN DUNCAN decd; MALINDA DUNCAN; SQUIRE DUNCAN; ANNE DUNCAN; ABNER DUNCAN; JULIA DUNCAN; heirs and distributors of BENJAMIN DUNCAN dec'd dft.

Pg.557: Court Aug. 20, 1807, VINCENT SHELTON plt vs (above DUNCAN defts) Ordered land to be sold by DAVIS to pay costs etc ... money received averts? to infant defendants when they arrive at full age.
In June 1811, ELIZABETH DUNCAN, the widow and executrix of BENJAMIN DUNCAN (WILLIAM) decd. late of Fayette Co. KY, appointed her friend JAMES DUNCAN of Logan Co. to act for her concerning the Will of BENJAMIN'S father, WILLIAM DUNCAN in Culpeper Co. VA and also to act for her in Pittsylvania Co. VA. This document, witnessed by REUBEN and ABNER BROWNING, was recorded in both Logan Co. KY Deed Book C, pg.268 (FHL film 364,582) and Culpeper Co. VA Deed Book EE, pg.499 (FHL film 30,955).

Subject: ARNETT Family
I noticed a question asking if you might know of a connection to the Cherokee Indians in the ARNETT family. A younger cousin asked me that question when she saw a picture of Dr. JAMES E ARNETT and RODA C MELTON ARNETT and their family. These were our great-grandparents.
RODA was the daughter of WILLIAM MELTON and she and Dr. ARNETT lived in Tennessee. After he died, RODA and the children moved to Texas. She is buried in Navarro county, Texas, as are some other family members.
DR JAMES E ARNETT was born in Henderson County, KY in 1830, the son of ELIJAH MELTON. I have information on his family back to JOSEPH B ARNETT who was born in Delaware. Haven't been able to get further back than that, but I believe that the family came from Scotland, based on the fact that this is what DR ARNETT'S daughter, my grandmother, told my mother, her daughter.
I have just recently found that another great-grandfather whose father had a plantation in Lowndes county, Alabama, married a planter's daughter from Russell county, Alabama, and they moved to Texas. He was JAMES DEGRAFFENREID MILES, son of AQUILLA MILES and ELIZABETH P DAVIS. JIM MILES' wife was ELLEN L DAY, daughter of WILLIAM WILEY DAY and LUCRETIA VANN. In tracing LUCRETIA'S family back, I found that the VANN family goes back to a Scottish settler who married a Cherokee woman, among others, and the half Cherokee men also married Cherokee women, and also white women. The only pictures I have of that side of the family are of JIM MILES, ELLEN DAY, and JIM'S sister, JOSEPHINE. They don't appear to have Native American features and they did live as white people of that time.
Anyway, I just wondered if anyone had information on any Native Americans in this Arnett family line.
