Crag – 27 yrs, At 27 years old, Crag is getting too old to lead the clan. Lately, he prefers the comforts of his hearth fire to the hunt, and has taken to hunting with his sling more often. As a leader, he is somewhat firm and uncompromising, although he keeps the clan’s best interests in mind. He is very strict with the women of the clan and with the hunters. He is good at organizing and making decisions and does not tolerate any questioning of his decisions. As he gets older, Crag is given more towards uncontrolled outbursts. Crag is somewhat reluctant to give up his leadership and has the excuse that he has not had any sons born to his hearth to train for the clan leadership. After Oba bore him four girls, Crag took another mate, Ada, who has since give him only two more girls. Crag enjoys the girls when they are babies, but does not take much notice of them when they begin to grow up. He claims that he has too many duties as leader of the clan, but in reality he does not want to be reminded of the fact that his mates have no sons. His totem is the Musk Ox.
Oba – 23 yrs. Oba is not bothered by the fact that Crag took another mate. It gives her a chance to relax more in her old age, as Crag uses Ada to relieve his needs and do most of the cooking. Oba enjoys weaving and has been experimenting with new basket-making techniques whenever her rheumatism keeps her bound to the hearth. Her totem is the Gannet.
[Dara – mated]
Riba – 8 yrs. Riba is somewhat shy and is not looking forward to the Clan Gathering. She recently became a woman and knows that, at the Clan Gathering, Crag will be looking for a mate for her. Riba is afraid of being mated to someone of another clan and having to leave her mother and her friend, Naga. Her totem is the Roe Deer.
Dika – 6 yrs. Dika is very friendly and eager to please. She is at the age where she wants to be treated as a grown-up and often plays ‘mates’ with Draz. Her totem is the Jerboa.
Karba – 5 yrs. Karba idolizes her older sister, Dika, and follows her everywhere. She does not do much thinking for herself, but lets Dika make the decisions for the pair. Her totem is the Lemming.
Nona – 1 yr. Nona is the delight of Crag, now that he has another mate to produce sons for him. She is indulged and coddled by both him and Oba. Oba was worried about the birth, because of her age, and it left her somewhat weakened. Her totem is the Mole.
Ada – 15 yrs. Ada was honored to be taken as second mate to the leader of the clan, even though he was so much older than her. She is quick in gathering and butchering and does most of the cooking around the hearth. She is pregnant again and Crag hopes that it is a boy, even though he would be too young to take over the leadership of the clan. Her totem is the Mouse.
Oza – 4 yrs. Oza always tries to tag along with Karba, but Karba feels that she is too grown up to play with a “baby”. Oza instead clings to her mother, never going far away. Her totem is the Goose.
Ivra – 2 yrs. Ada’s youngest is fascinated with the new baby at the hearth, Nona. She can often be found sitting on the floor, a thumb in her mouth, staring at Nona. Her totem is the Snowy Owl.
Second Hearth
Goub – 24 yrs. Goub is the second-in-command and, like Crag, is getting too old for his job. He secretly wishes that Crag would pass on the leadership so that the two men could spend more time in the cave and less time at the hunt. After Goub’s first mate, Urla, died, he decided to take another mate, as neither of the children at his hearth were mated yet and had hearths of their own. Goub, who is a somewhat comfort-loving man, wanted a young mate to bed every night and to prepare him special meals. Kova was the only unmated woman in the clan at the time and was given to Goub, despite her young age. Karv and the son of his mate, Breg, had both had their manhood hunts, but Goub was given preference because of his age and high status in the clan. His totem is the Mongoose.
.
(Urla) – deceased. She was a good mate for Goub and doted on him. Her totem was the Vole.
[Breg – mated]
Onra – 12 yrs. Onra is somewhat resentful at having a woman the same age as mate of her father and mistress of the hearth. She tends to flaunt her status as daughter of the mate of the second-in-command and is hoping to mate with a man of equally high status. She recently became a woman, somewhat later than the other girls in her clan, and is hoping to find a mate at the Clan Gathering. Her totem is the Snapping Turtle.
Kova – 12 yrs. Kova was not pleased with the mating that was arranged for her two years ago. She and Breg had been playmates when younger and she had hoped to be given to him when she became a woman. Her mother, Urka, begged her mate for Kova’s sake, but she was given to Goub instead. Kova does not dislike Goub and the man is kind to her, but she feels that Goub sees his young mate only as a trophy (which he does). She still wishes that she had been mated to Breg and is pleased that he often seeks her out to relieve his needs. Kova is pregnant again and secretly hopes that the baby will be of Breg’s totem. Her totem is the Salmon.
Thag – 1 yr. Thag is a serious baby who is indulged by both his mother and her mate. He seems intent on learning how to walk. Thag’s totem was just revealed to be the Ibex.
Third Hearth
Karv – 14 yrs. Karv is a young man who is not happy with the hand that life has dealt him. He is not particularly tall or fast and is only a mediocre hunter. Karv has no chance to rise to fame or a position of importance. He sees his mate as another personal failing. Rather than spending more time on the practice field, Karv spends the time watching and disciplining Dara, often with vicous beatings. He contents himself that, if he can’t have the best hunting arm or the best set of running legs, he’ll have the best behaved mate. His totem is the Wolverine.
Dara – 12 yrs. Growing up, Dara developed an impulsive, slightly disobedient set of behaviors as a way of getting the attention of the man at her hearth, Crag. It did not matter to her that the attentions she received from the leader of the clan were negative, she was at least able to draw his attention away from the men’s activities. Dara got all of the attention that she needed after being mated to Karv, who seems determined to correct all of her “faulty behavior”. Although she doesn’t enjoy the beatings, they seem to offer some inner satisfaction that he concentrates so much attention on her, which is why she continues her behavior. Still, there is no fondness between Karv and Dara, and she was displeased to find out that her totem was defeated, as she is sure it was Karv’s totem that she swallowed. Karv attributes her behavior to her strong totem, the Arctic Fox.
Crouz – 26 yrs. Crouz is a quiet, almost dreamy man. He spends much of his time meditating on some of the mysteries of life and takes his role as mog-ur very seriously. The members of the clan see him as very empathetic and wise and often come to him for advice in matters other than spiritual ones. Crouz is very perceptive and aware of people’s emotions, and is not blind to the faults of the son of his mate, Karv. He has become very close to the son of his mate’s mate, Dara, who lives at their hearth. His totem is Ursus and the Caribou.
(Anha) – deceased. The mate of the mog-ur died some years ago from the burning sickness. The holy man never desired to choose another mate to replace the quiet, patient woman. Her totem was the Oriole.
Fourth Hearth
Greb – 32 yrs. Greb does not want to admit his age and often tries to accompany the other men on hunts. He still has a strong arm and keen eyesight, but Crag privately wishes that he would put his talents to use with a sling or bola, as Greb slows the hunters down. Greb used to knap the flint when he was younger and Crag has been encouraging him to do so again, as it will keep the older man in the cave and away from the hunting grounds. His totem is the Badger.
Akra – 30 yrs. Akra is the mother of Urla, Thaz and Ilba. Everyone is surprised that she has lived so long, but her health is beginning to fail. Her mind is still sharp and she enjoys telling the women’s stories, but she is not able to leave her hearth as often anymore. Her totem is the Mole.
Fifth Hearth
Thaz – 19 yrs. Thaz is a short, powerful man with a love of hunting and a zest for life. He is never as happy as when he is doing something physical and is good at most everything he sets himself to, whether it be spear-hunting, bola-hunting, or running. He is very fond of his mate, Ooga, and sets himself to doing things to please her, bringing her favorite pelts and cuts of meat. Thaz is kind of equivilant to the Neanderthal-version of the dumb jock with the heart of gold. His totem is the Elk.
Ooga – 19 yrs. Ooga is a strong, capable women who can often be found organizing the women’s activities. She felt a piece of her spirit was lost when her eldest son died and is reluctant to let her youngest son hunt. However she is very good at keeping busy and hiding her fears and sadnesses behind her work. Her totem is the Muskrat.
(Grav) – deceased. Grav was trampled by a bison and died during his manhood hunt. His mother and his mate were both devastated, as Thaz was sure that Grav was a child of his spirit. His totem was the Horse, but he couldn’t run fast enough that time.
Boda – 9 yrs. Boda is somewhat taller than the other women, but is still considered to be very handsome. She is quite good at working with hides and is proud of her skill. She has her Ooga’s modesty, though, and will not be found gloating like her friend, Onra. Her totem is the Mink.
Corv – 8 yrs. Corv is eager for his own manhood hunt. He practices with Thaz and Lorc and both of them feel that he is ready, although Ooga is still reluctant to let him go on the hunt. His totem is the Wild Cat.
Lorc – 33 yrs. Although his eyesight is failing, Lorc still has a strong arm and many animals fall prey to his bola. Despite being the oldest member of Crag’s clan, Lorc contributes much to the hearth of the daughter of his mate, Ooga. His totem is the Cheetah.
(Doa) – deceased. Lorc’s mate was the medicine woman of the clan before she passed on the role to her daughter, Urka. She made sure that all of her daughters were useful women, either by learning her healing lore or by learning to do well the tasks required of a Clan woman. Her totem was the Beaver.
Sixth Hearth
Broov – 17 yrs. Broov is the clan’s flint knapper and he is also the eminent jokester. Broov cannot remain quiet while knapping and will often keep up a wry, running commentary as he works, sometimes mimicking the people around him with realism. He also puts this talent to good use telling stories and is often chosen to help with the hunt dances. His totem is the Ptarmigan.
Ilba – 16 yrs. Ilba is considered the mother of the clan. She can often be found surrounded by all of the children and is all too happy to stay back from extended hunting trips to watch the young ones. There is a genuine fondness between her and Broov. Her totem is the Quail.
Draz – 6 yrs. Although Draz was not born deformed, he was born small and weak. He has been learning to hunt with the sling, as he does not have the strength or endurance for the running and jabbing of spear-hunting. Draz has recently shown an interest in learning flint-knapping, which Broov encourages, privately thinking that the boy will never have the strength to be a hunter. His totem is the Ptarmigan, the same as the mate of his mother.
Karn – 3 yrs. Although Karn is three years younger, he is very protective of his older brother, following him around all the time to make sure that he is O.K. His totem is the Merlin Hawk.
Seventh Hearth
Soob – 11 yrs. Soob is the mog-ur’s acolyte and he is not a very confident young man. Crouz wants to pass the mog-urship to the younger man, but Soob is still very unsure of his abilities. His totem is the Peregrin Falcon.
Naga – 9 yrs. Naga is everything that a good Clan woman should be…and that’s about it. She has no particular interest in anything, especially not in her mother’s healing lore. Her totem is the Cod.
Urka – 22 yrs. Since the recent death of her mate, Deek, Urka has lived at the hearth of her youngest daughter, Naga, and her mate. She comes from a long lineage of medicine women and is disappointed that her daughters do not have any interest in carrying on the line. Urka is pleased that Dara seems to show an interest in healing magic and has been training her and, even though the young woman does not come from an unbroken lineage, she seems to have the memories for it. Her totem is the Woodchuck.
(Deek) – deceased. Deek and Urka were very close and his recent death took a lot of spirit out of her. His totem was the Badger.
Eighth Hearth
Breg – 13 yrs. Although he is young, Breg has proven himself as a strong hunter and a quiet leader. Since he was a boy, he harbored a fondness for Kova, the quiet daughter of the medicine woman. It was understood that she would be given to him when she became a woman. He was shocked and hurt when Kova was given to the mate of his mother. Breg feels somewhat resentful towards Goub, feeling that the man asked for Kova just to spite the son of his hearth. Despite Breg’s resentful feelings and lack of respect, he is able to control his anger around Goub, and often simply avoids the older man. Breg is kind to the woman who was given to him, Yana, but still wishes that it was Kora who shared his furs at night. His totem is the Golden Eagle.
Yana – 11 yrs. Yana has a deft, steady hand and can cut the skin away from an animal without puncturing the hide. She tries to be a good woman as she truly cares for her mate. She knows that he does not return the feelings and feels that it is perhaps because of a failing of hers. Because of this, Yana is always striving to be better and attain some kind of perfection. Her totem is the Trout.
Rooa – 1 yr. Rooa is a cheerful baby who is always making more noises than a Clan baby should be making. Yana is afraid that the unnecessary noises will reflect badly on her, but finds it difficult to reprimand the adorable baby. Rooa’s totem was recently revealed to be the Duck.
