BLACKBURN AND PRETTY BUCK

BLACKBURN AND PRETTY BUCK

We would like to give you a chance to find out
more about the stallions, Blackburn and Pretty Buck.
I will be adding more information as time allows.

PRETTY BUCK
Pretty Buck was bred and foaled on the Waggoner ranch of Vernon,
Texas in May of 1942. E. Paul Waggoner was the owner of both the
Waggoner ranch and the Three D’s Ranch near Arlington Texas. He was
registered # 2103 with the AQHA in 1945. He is registered a light
brown with black points, but some say he was a dun with black points.
The sire of Pretty Buck was Pretty Boy, foaled in
1928, AQHA #2229. He was also registered a brown.

Pretty Boy was a noted sire of ranch horses and a great broodmare sire.
He was the sire of the great mares Pretty
Rosalie and Sheilwin. When bred to Poco Beuno (another Waggoner
stallion) Pretty Rosalie produced Poco Pine and Poco Stampeed. Poco
Pine is the second leading sire of AQHA Champions with 37. When Poco Pine
was bred to Hobo Sue they produced Dollie Pine the dam of Zippo Pine Bar.
Zippo Pine Bar is the all time leading sire of
AQHA ROM show horses.
Poco Stampeed was the 1959 NCHA World Champion Cutting horse
and the 1958 AQHA Honor Roll Cutting horse.

Sheilwin was by Pretty Boy and out of a Blackburn mare. She was broke
to ride by Bob Burton and proved to be athletic and gentle so was put into
the broodmare band at the Waggoner ranch. She had 7 foals by Poco Bueno.
The foals were AQHA Champion Poco Tivio who is the noted broodmare
sire of such noted horses as Cal Bar, Boon Bar, Doc’s Haida, Doc’s
Remedy, Fizzabar, Doc’s Prescription, Doc’s Lynx and many others.
AQHA Honor Roll Working Cow horse Pretty Pokey.
AQHA Champion Poco Lena (the dam of Doc O’Lena and Dry Doc).
AQHA Champion Poco Champ.
Poco Sandra, who had considerable success on the West Coast in open
Hackamore classes and stock horse competition,
and the last two foals died while they were still young.

This would be a good time to mention that Poco Beuno sired 36 AQHA
Champions. Of those thirty-six Champions, half (18) were out of mares that were either sired by or
grand get of Pretty Buck or Blackburn.

Pretty Buck is the sire of 29 ROM performance foals with 52 halter
point earners. He sired 9 AQHA Champions. His get earned 1,260 points in
both performance and halter with four superior halter horses and two
superior performance horses.

His most noted performer was the gelding Snipper W who earned 129
cutting points and 52 halter points with superiors in both of these events. He
earned $44,815.47 in NCHA cutting. He was the 1953 NCHA World
Champion Cutting Horse and the 1951 and 1952 NCHA Reserve World
Champion Cutting Horse. He earned the NCHA Silver and Bronze award.
Snipper W was out of Snippette by Blackburn.

If you look at the extended pedigrees of many of
today's top performance horses you will find Blackburn
and or Pretty Buck. They have stood the test of time
in the show ring, and on the ranch. Great pleasure
horses, reining horses, working cow horses, rodeo
horses and family friends trace back to these
wonderful old stallions.
We are continuing these great lines through our
stallion Mr Blackburn 940.
