Death: Clyde Houlden...

We learned that Clyde Houlden, Jr., former NSD Buildings and Grounds Supervisor, passed away at the age of 76 this past Sunday, September 7, at the Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln. His death was caused by heart attack. We were told that he and Rubie were in the process of moving to the Good Samaritan Center in Hastings, they'd stopped for dinner and he passed on right after that dinner date.

His memorial service was at All Saints Catholic Church in Holdrege, Nebraska (about 1/2 hour drive southwest of Kearney) on Wedneday, September 10. Burial of cremains will be at a later date. We were told that there will be another memorial service in Omaha in the future.

He was born June 14, 1927, on the family farm northeast of Elwood to Clyde Sr. and Mary Ann (Hansen) Houlden.

He graduated from Elwood High School in 1946.

He worked as a ditch-rider for Tri-County Irrigation District in Holdrege and later was stationed at the Canaday Steam Plant near Lexington.

In 1948, he married Eloris Sill. She died in 1960.

On April 29, 1961, he married Rubie O'Grady.

They moved to Omaha in 1965. He was employed by the Nebraska Department of Education as superintendent of buildings and grounds at the campus of the Nebraska School for the Deaf until he retired in 1993.

They retired to Elwood, where he enjoyed working in his yard and garden and spending time with family.

He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Lexington. He was also a member of the Eagles Motor Patrol 154 in Omaha.

He enjoyed Nebraska football, restoring antique cars and his church.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Joe O'Grady of Blair, Brad of Cambridge and Tim of Omaha; daughters, Sherry Easterday of Eustis and Judy Bunger of Hildreth; brothers, Dean and Melvin, both of Elwood; sister, Barbara Holloway of Virginia; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son and a sister.

Many of you will remember Clyde for his stern manner toward others but he loved NSD.

Deaf Digest mentioned about us...

[I copied an article from recent email I received from the Deaf Digest - August 17th issue]

'THE DEAF OF NEBRASKA JUST WON'T FADE AWAY'

The Nebraska School for the Deaf was closed up by the state. This tragic decision made by the state government in 1988 has not stopped the deaf leaders of Nebraska from moving forward.

The group, led by the Nebraska School for the Deaf Alumni Association (very active and very involved), has come up with a mission - to spearhead a course for deaf children of future Nebraska. Also involved is the Nebraska Association of the Deaf.
