(NLMRA) Official Racing Rules

All rules are subject to change without notice.

It is the responsibility of the builder and driver to be familiar with and adhere to the following rules as suggested and agreed upon by the NLMRA organizing members. Any questions concerning these rules may be directed to any of the members listed on the last page.

1. Track Rules

  1. No alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs may be consumed before or during a race. Violators WILL BE DISQUALIFIED.
  2. Intentional rough housing or unsafe driving will result in DISQUALIFICATION.
  3. Safe passing is the responsibility of the overtaking driver--go around on the outside.
  4. Drivers must keep both hands on the steering wheel except to momentarily operate other controls.
  5. Drivers who leave the course are out of the race.
  6. If a mower stalls on the course, the driver's first responsibility is to move the mower to a safe position off of the track.
  7. A mower must be completely stopped before a driver dismounts.
  8. All drivers MUST attend all announced driver's meetings.
  9. Drivers are allowed a maximum of two people besides him/herself in the pit area.

2. Driver Safety Requirements

  1. Drivers under 18 years of age need to file a parental consent form with the NLMRA. This can be done on race day. Or you can print out this form and bring it with you.
  2. Drivers must wear LONG pants, closed shoes, and shirt.
  3. Drivers must wear a helmet that covers the ears if racing in the outlaw class, and is highly recommended for every class.
  4. No smoking is allowed in the race area.
  5. Engines must be stopped before drivers dismount the mower.
  6. Drivers must dismount before refueling.
  7. Drivers are responsible for the conduct of his/her guests and crew, even while on the track.
  8. All individuals entering the racing course, including crew members and guests, MUST sign a release form discharging NLMRA and the race sponsor from liability. All individuals entering the track area must display a wristband.
  9. NO pets allowed.

3. Technical Inspection

(All mowers are subject to technical inspection at any time.)
  1. EVERY mower entered in any NLMRA event MUST be approved for competitions by the technical inspector BEFORE practice laps or actual racing.
  2. When mowers have passed technical inspection, they will be given a # sticker for identification and to signify that it passed technical inspection.
  3. Drivers must show their safety equipment during the technical inspection.
  4. All mowers must be built from a lawn mower frame, with lawn mower engines and transmissions.
  5. Mower width should NOT exceed 42" (3'6": measured according to outside tire width).
  6. Mower length should NOT exceed 78" (6'6").

Mower Safety Requirements

Includes the following, but is not restricted to...
  1. Cutting blades must be removed completely from all mowers.
  2. Mower brakes must be in good operating condition, easy to operate, and operating on a minimum of two wheels.
  3. Mowers must be free of projecting objects that could injure the driver, another competitor, or his/her mower. (i.e. Open flywheel without starter).
  4. Mowers must be SAFE and COMPLETE. All parts and panels must be in place with no missing nuts, bolts, or cotter keys.
  5. All exposed chains and sprockets must be fitted with metal guards which will direct a broken chain downward.
  6. All positive (live) electrical terminals must be insulated with a cover or heavy tape.
  7. Batteries MUST be well secured.
  8. Body must be mounted in the center of the wheels.
  9. Only lawn mower seats can be used and must be solidly mounted in the center of the tractor.
  10. Tires must match in size per axle, not to exceed 24" in height.
  11. No studded tires.
  12. Clutch--engines must be able to start and run without tractor moving.

Racing Classes


A. STOCK-CLASS DESIGNATION C: Minimum age: 10 years old.
  1. Governed top no-load RPM of 3600 max.
  2. No blades.
  3. Deck optional.
  4. All stock tires--equal size per axle.
  5. All stock parts.
  6. No power or performance improvements.
  7. Automatic throttle return optional.
  8. No pure alcohol fuel.

B. SUPER STOCK-CLASS DESIGNATION B: Minimum age: 13 years old
  1. Governed top no-load RPM of 3600 max.
  2. No blades.
  3. Deck optional.
  4. Tire modifications allowed but must be of equal size per axle.
  5. Pulley modifications allowed.
  6. Must have an automatic throttle return OR an engine shut down mechanism in case of driver absence (kill tether).
  7. No pure alcohol fuel.
C. OUTLAW-CLASS DESIGNATION A: Minimum age: 15 years old.
  1. No blades.
  2. Deck optional.
  3. No RPM limit.
  4. No pure alcohol fuel.
  5. Pulley modifications allowed.
  6. Tire modifications allowed, but must be of equal size per axle.
  7. Must have an automatic throttle return.
  8. Must have an engine shut-down mechanism in case of driver absence (kill tether).

Fees

A. Membership--All racers must become a member of the NLMRA to compete.
  1. Cost: $1.00 per year. You will receive an official 2002 membership card, and a number given on a first come first serve basis. You will keep this number all season, and any points you accumulate will go with your membership number.
  2. You must sign an official release form. You can print out a copy here and bring it with you on race day.
B. Entry Fees
  1. Stock Class: $3.00 per event.
  2. Super Stock and Outlaw Classes: $10.00 per event.
  3. All entry fees are subject to change by the race sponsor.
