Last summer, I spent mostly all my time in the Upward Bound program. This summer, I am going to spend more time in the program again.
Upward Bound assists low income and
first generation students in achieving their goal of obtaining a college
education through school year and summer academic programming. Our currently
funded grant will operate until May 31, 2008.
During participation in the summer session, students attend classes, go on field
trips, play sports, engage in other educational activities and, of course, have
fun! Students stay on campus for six action packed weeks during the summer each
year. The summer session operates 7 days per week.
Upward Bound staff helps students during the school year to make sure they are
getting good grades, and are taking the classes appropriate for college bound
students. Tutorial and counseling services are provided every week. Students
attend fall and spring workshops. These weekend workshops usually consist of a
self-development class, mini skill development sessions, and free time for
students to talk to the friends that they have made during the summer.
| Commitment/Expectations of Upward Bound Participants | |
|
Participants are expected to commit
themselves to maintain satisfactory academic progress. Part of this
commitment REQUIRES Upward Bounders to attend workshops and other activities
during the school year. Also, participants must attend tutorial sessions IF
needed. Summer session attendance is required |
THINK POSITIVE:
If you want to get somewhere, you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never give up.
The secret of life isn't what happens to you, but what you DO with what happens to you.
Help other people to cope with their problems and your own will be easier to cope with.
Never use the word impossible seriously again. Toss it into the verbal wastebasket.
Self-trust is the first secret of success. So believe in and trust yourself!
Stand up to your obstacles and do something about them. You will find that they haven't half the strength you think they have.
Joy increases as you give it, and diminishes as you try to keep it for yourself. In giving it, you will accumulate a deposit of joy greater than you ever believed possible.
How you think about a problem is more important than the problem itself --so always think positively.
Go at life with abandon; give it all you've got. And life will give all it has to you
