CHAS & SUSAN’S
EXCELLENT
UK ADVENTURE

Day Eight …

CASTLE
CRATHES!

The original section of
this 16th century Castle
(the tall part, with
towers and turrets)
was started in 1553, and
completed in 1596.

Around 1800 (?) a “Queen Anne”
wing was added. And later, a
“Victorian addition” was built.

In 1966, a terrible fire completely destroyed the Victorian portions, and about half of the Queen Anne wing. What remained of the Queen Anne wing was repaired, but the Victorian additions were not rebuilt.

As with other Scottish Trust Castles,
you’re not allowed to take pictures
INSIDE the Castle.

Want To
SEE INSIDE?

“With its portraits, oak ceilings, heraldic shields, Elizabethan fireplace and more, Crathes is uniquely preserved. The castle is particularly famous for its Jacobean painted ceilings, only uncovered in 1877.
These can be seen in the Chamber of the Muses, the Chamber of Nine Nobles,
and the Green Lady's Room – which is said to be haunted.”
Above RIGHT: a close-up of the CEILING in the “Nine Nobles” chamber.

Here come the pix WE took, from the TOP o’ CRATHES!

OK! Which one is mine? Which is Susan’s?!!!
Again, when processing all our pix, I discovered that Susan and I EACH found
WONDER and AMAZEMENT in the same things!

Here we go AGAIN!!! One is mine. One is Susan’s!
Do you see how one could spend HOURS just walking around in that garden?!

Crathes
Stables

This building
has been renovated
into a GIFT SHOP
and a KIDZ CENTER

We enjoyed
BOTH!

Whatever building this USED to be,
(Dairy, maybe?)
it’s a RESTAURANT, NOW!

I decided to PASS on the
Haggis, Neeps, & Taties
(Haggis, turnips, & potatoes).

But, I thoroughly enjoyed my
Cullen Skink Pie!
(A scrumptious sort of
“Quiche,” containing
haddock, potatoes & vegetables!)

Ah!
Having sipped and supped,
we were OFF to
ANOTHER CASTLE!

Come with US
to
DRUM
CASTLE!!!
