Proposal:

The world that George Orwell created in 1984 is very different from that of which we live in. George Orwell’s world is restricted, fearful and controlled. From the government authorities to the actions society produces, one could see that the world in 1984 is far from being a state with freedoms. All these characteristics describe a world that is best defined as being a dystopia. A dystopian world is defined (according to Merriam Webster dictionary online) as an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives. As a reader, one thinks that our world today is nothing like Oceania, yet through out the novel there are many similarities that relate to historical world events that show the symptoms of a dystopian world.. The fear of a Thoughtcrimes, telescreens watching your every move and simply not being able to trust anyone are the main characteristics of a dystopia described in 1984. George Orwell focuses the dystopian characteristics on the structure of the state as well as the structure of society, giving the reader dread and fear of this world being illustrated.

Although the world we live in is not a dystopia, the historical past has shown many symptoms of a dystopian society through dictatorship, a bloodthirsty generation, and total control of the whole society. In this proposal I would like to (1) show that Orwell writes about clear parallelisms of our history in the book and (2) that the world today has shown symptoms of a dystopian world compared to what is written in 1984.
