Next Evening

DISCLAIMERS: This is my attempt at a better ending to Last Knight. I wrote this in an effort to get rid of the bad taste it left. It's been lurking on my hard drive since then (Feb.'97) and hasn't been beta-read. It's been revised once and spell checked so it should be readable. This is my first fanfic so please don't flame.

Forever Knight and its characters belong to someone else (if they belonged to me, I wouldn't have written this). Permission to archive on fkfanfic.com and the ftp site. If anyone else wants to archive this, I'm flattered, just drop me a line telling me where it is so I can visit.

Next Evening (01/01)
By Emma Lighton

Nick closed his eyes, waiting to feel the stake plunge through his back. Somewhere in the distance he heard his phone ring and his answering machine pick up. As he felt the stake pierce his flesh, bringing him sweet oblivion, he recognized the voice leaving the message. Then darkness overcame him.

"...Hasta la bye-bye."

Nick sat up with a jerk. As he stared at the familiar contents of the loft, he tried to remember why he was expecting to see damned souls writhing in torment or possibly fluffy clouds and pearly gates. The nightmare receded before he could grasp it again and was replaced by a heavy feeling in his stomach and slight pounding in his temples.

As he headed down stairs to get breakfast, his gaze fell on the table containing his phone, answering machine and a glass containing the dregs of Nat's latest concoction. He grabbed the glass and poured the remains down the sink.

"I guess Nat's going to have to try something else." Nick muttered to himself as he hit the play button on the answering machine.

"Hey, Nick rise and shine." Schanke's familiar voice said as it rose from the speaker. "I just got the word that Cohen's taking a transfer, and yours truly is getting promoted to captain. Myra wants you to come over tomorrow to help us celebrate. Don't worry about Dollard, a couple of uniforms are taking him to Alberta. Oh, and Nick I'll need you to come in a bit early so I can introduce you to your new partner. She's a little green, but she's a good cop. See ya tonight. Hasta la bye-bye."

Nick frowned at the machine and headed back to the bedroom to get dressed. He'd just have to try to talk Schanke out of giving him another partner. Then again, he'd got use to working with one, how bad could it be?
