A Kiss Before Dying

And that’s when I took his life

In an instant it was all over

Death leaves the dead without strife

And so it left me with her

She, for whom his heart yearned

She, for whom he his family turned

She, for whom he our marital vows burned

She, for whom he my love spurned

She had no role in this

Save that she was perfect

She pushed him not in this

It was their souls which fit

He loved me still I know

Even at the time of his death

All the care did he show

Even as I stifled his breath

Yet love to him was empty

For it wasn’t in me he sought

It was she who had in he

The meaning of true love taught

I did not grudge his touch

Nor did I deny him mine

But what I saw in him lurch

Was her name before mine

And in that instant of carnal pleasure

The meaning of togetherness I did measure

For he took her name as would one

Whose life had found the chosen one

And my hands around his neck I clasped

As I lay above him spread

And when he so suddenly gasped

Was it with lust or dread

There was no inquest

They let me rest

There will be though

When I meet her next, for ……
