Introduction to
Lifestyle
Education through
Discipleship
Being L.E.D.
by God is more than just a methodology for
home schooling; it is an entire way of looking at and living
Life. As applied to home schooling it rests on natural,
purposeful Real Life activities, not artificially contrived
meaningless assignments. It more involves life skills and
real world experiences than workbook pages and True/False
tests. It focuses on learning math skills in order to
balance a budget (something the government hasn't learned),
triple a recipe, or buy the correct amount of wallpaper for
the living room, as well as knowing how to keep books for a
home business. It focuses on learning to read, write, and
reason well in order to effectively communicate the Gospel
of Jesus Christ. It focuses on reading true stories of men
and women of God who accomplished His will for them and
thereby set a standard for us to press toward. It focuses on
observing His mighty creation in awe and wonderment of both
it's vastness and preciseness. It focuses on learning life
skills pertinent to the child's future; teaching our sons to
be providers for their families whether their interest and
skill lie in carpentry, auto mechanics, farming or computers;
and to be spiritual leaders and teachers of their future
families. It requires teaching our daughters to be keepers-
at-home, through cooking, sewing, and homemaking skills, and
to be helpmeets for their future husbands in teaching and
business, and in developing the interests and skills God has
placed in them. Even if your child ends up not called to be
married, none of these skills are wasted.
This is not the broad based education the world speaks of,
but rather the narrow way that our Lord speaks of. His road
is narrow, the world's is broad. He says to train up
(narrow) a child in the way he should go. His way provides a
purpose for living: To serve God and glorify Him forever.
Because Discipleship is a Lifetime process for us as well
as our children, and because we and our children are all
individuals, L.E.D. cannot
consist of a 'set in cement' curriculum. We can only
recommend and develop resources that are consistent with the
philosophy of L.E.D. As we
are being changed from glory to glory we are doing just that
, developing resources for our family, which will also help
to equip you for your journey. But they are only
tools, not blueprints. Examples given are the practical
application for our family; the way the Holy Spirit
has L.E.D. us. They may or
may not be applicable to your family. The philosophy
of L.E.D. consist of
principles. How those principles are applied in your family
may be very different than how they're applied in our family, but I pray the principles will provide a firm foundation, as you set Jesus Christ as your cornerstone, and build by the blueprints of the Holy Spirit.
