Engine Swap

I understand that it is possible to swap the 16V 1.8 with the 1.8T...
How much would that cost?
what would need to be done to the car for that (using a 1986 Scirocco 16V)
is it a direct bolt?
your engine section says that the 1.8T is the basic 1.8 VW engine with 5
valves and a turbo.
is there a weight issue that needs to be taken into account (how much does a
1.8 16V weigh compared to a 1.8T)
is a 1.8T engine easily acquired as a crate motor or is there a need for a
donor car?
I am planning on buying a 1986 Scirocco 16V, but the engine has 145k miles
on it. The man I am buying it from is the original owner and has taken very
good care of the car. It would be nice, however to put a more modern engine
into the car. The car will cost around $1800. if a 1.8T were to be
transplanted, would it almost definately break $10k?
thanks

The weight of the two engines is virtually identical.  Installation is time
consuming, mostly due tot he exhaust and wiring.  Crate motors really aren't
availablle, we use used engines from an Audi A4's or Passat's. A complete
swap including big intercooler, ecu mod and custom downpipe (@220HP)is
@$7500.00, including a clutch, but no transmission work.

About how long would it take?
would we be required to find the donor car?
and even though there is no transmission work done, does there NEED to be
transmission work done after a time?
thanks
Jared

The price includes the engine and parts from a donor car.  I would suggest
at the least the trans be rebuilt ($1095.00).  You may wish to install a
Quaiffe limited slip differential($1095.00 if done during a rebuild)to
handle the tremdous power.
From the time you dropped the car it would be @7 weeks

Change of plans now
would the same $8k price apply to transplanting a 1.8T with a G60 Corrado?
or is there more work involved?
and would you give trade in for the G60 engine?
My friend is thinking of selling his G60 because of the problems of
maintaining a G60, but he really likes the Corrado. He is thinking of
getting a VR6 but that will cost him around $12k for a nice Corrado VR6.
Is the 1.8T a reliable engine?
is it more reliable than a VR6?
Ive heard that the VR6 takes a ton of oil and its like $30 for an oil filter
for the VR6?
is the cost of maintaining a 1.8T less than that of a VR6?
thanks
Jared

Yes the same price would apply and the G60 Corrado is probably the best car
to do the swap into. It already has the 02A transmission as well as the
better suspension.  If you wanted to save a few buck you could even reuse
the stock G60 intercooler.
A 1.8T should prove to be somewhat more reliable than the VR6 as well as
cheaper to maintain

just wondering...
you guys arent going to be moving from Walpole in the next year or so?
We have decided that a 1.8T Corrado would be the best way to go, but we
still need to pay the car off and the money for the transplant. Overall it
should take about a year and a half.
My friend and I discussed this last night and we have agreed to take this
course of action. its just going to take some time

No plans to move.  It might even be cheaper as I expect the price of engine
to come down

About how many miles would be on the donor engine?
is there a way to get a low mileage engine if we spend more or do you just
give us the engine most readily available?

At this point they are all pretty low miles. Say 40,000 on the high end to
10,000 on the low, it really depends on what's available

one last thing on a G60 to 1.8T swap
the 1.8T you drop in (220hp), is it street legal?
Im asking this because most of the 1.8T swaps I see are for racing only.
and what do you do to get the hp from 150 to 220?
220hp is like a Stage 4 upgrade to a 1.8T.
unless its a GreedSpeed, but the GreedSpeed upgrade loses lots of power in
both torque and hp in the low range. to give it better top end.
is there a power gain all across the board on your 1.8T? if not all across
the board, what is the maximum loss and at what rpms?
thanks

The chip is not CARB exempt, however at all but full throttle is completely emmisions compliant.  To get to 220Hp:
Garrett 1 bar chip (normally will give 200hp with no other mod)
Custom 2.5" downpipe to stock G60 cat which flows more than the stock 1.8T unit
Custom intercooler that is easily twice the size of the stock A4 unit
This gives an estimated 220Hp
The power is up everywhere, there is no low RPM loss as the small turbo is retained

will it cost any money to remove the engine (G60)?
and will we get trade in on the charger and engine?
this is very important to us, as a $7500 loan is hard to get, any extra
money we could get for the engine or charger would be ideal. If not, would
it be possible for us to get the engine so we could sell it?
we are also hoping that by next summer (when we are planning on doing the
swap) the price may be down around $6000-6500.
We want to get a core trade for the engine either way, whether it be from
you or through another buyer.

Jared and Kris.

Removing your engine is included in the swap, we would not give you any
credit for your engine, but it is certainly yours to sell.

ok,
its streetable. thats good
now, what kind of gas do we need to use?
your page says they are racing engines and need racing fuel.
is this particular one in need or 100 octane (which is not easily attainable
around here)
94 would be better, but some places around here sell 97
what is your minimum octane rating on the 1.8T swap?

Super unleaded works fine
