I blame Andrew, the first love of my life for ever getting me into Squeeze's music. I nicked one of his tapes and after listening to it constantly for a night I was hooked.
I bought 'Frank' on tape about 7 years ago in Oxford when I was studying for my A levels. I remember dancing around my room to 'Dr Jazz' on full blast on my tiny stereo, but still managing to disturb the other 6 students I was living with. I was so tempted to make my name even longer by being called Chandima Tushari Oolamalawaladollar Nethisinghe, but my friends wouldn't go for it!! 'Dr Jazz' is a song that has got me through all of my exams up to degree level, as just before I go out to take an exam I cheer myself up with that song, and find myself singing it in my head halfway through the exam when I was supposed to be writing essays on International Trade.
Whilst studying for an A-Level in English Language, I desperately wanted the opportunity to be able to say that "Her hair hung across her face Like a bush hangs across a wall" was the best simile ever. But the chance never arose.
I picked my tape up again recently when someone crashed into the back of my car and I had to have a courtesy car which actually had a tape player. It just seemed so appropriate as at the time I was seeing a divorced man, who lived with his 10 year old son, and told me ominous stories about his wife. 'Can of Worms' just seemed so appropriate for him, if I changed the sexes. I only started to panic when I saw myself as the friend on the sofa.
I often find myself dancing round the kitchen cooking or drying up to this tape and it just reminds me of the great times I've had. Slaughtered Gutted and Heartbroken reminds me of all the times I have been, and although it's written in a male perspective, it still rings true!!
And finally, the lyrics for She Doesn't Have To Shave provides me with a great line to use on my boyfriend in the morning when he's in the bathroom covered in shaving foam!!
