Sarah’s Wedding Day

Chintz-y china sets, towels and Hoovers
Sit along side the flowery patterned duvet covers
Clogging up the scenery
In her mother’s conservatory
Cards queue up to be the first
To get put up on the shelf

Ribbons, bows and taffeta
Silver and white wrapping paper
Ripped to shreds and packed tight in the bin
Along with the 5 years spent living in sin
Rushing back and forth to the shops and to the venue
Tying burgundy ribbons round the menus

Flapping around
Like an owl round a barn
Trying to find a dress
Flapping around
Like a bat round an attic
Tidying up the mess
Flapping around
Like a moth round a light bulb
Hoping the groom will be on time
Flapping around
Like a bride before her wedding
But everything will turn out fine
On Sarah’s wedding day.

It’s the big day. It’s finally here.
8.30 in the morning tiara inserted in hair.
The relative reptiles have crept out
Of the moor lands and the woodwork
Seated on the wrong side
Of the aisle

Flapping around
Like an owl round a barn
Trying to fit in the dress
Flapping around
Like a bat round an attic
Making more and more mess
Flapping around
Like a moth round a light bulb
Hope the groom turns up on time
Flapping around
Like a bride just before her wedding
But everything will be fine
On Sarah’s wedding day.

I do’s giggled through tears
The ring manages not to disappear
Out through confetti across wet gravel
The bride and her train travel
Across to the reception for bucks fizz
Food and speeches and all that biz

Flapping around
Like an owl round a barn
Trying not to step on the dress
Flapping around
Like a bat round an attic
Finally they can kiss
Flapping around
Like a moth round a light bulb
The groom was there on time
Flapping around
Like a bride at her wedding
But everything was turning out fine
On Sarah’s wedding day.

Scary wallpaper jumps out at me
Flashing disco lights so I can’t see
Glen Tilbrook look a-likes trying to mosh
As grannies sit and look on with disparaging looks
As others clog up the bars
The last smooch is ours

Flapping around
Like an owl round a barn
Can finally get out of that dress
Flapping around
Like a bat round an attic
Watching drunk guests make a mess
Flapping around
Like a moth round a light bulb
Everyone had a great time
Flapping around
Like a bride at the end of her wedding
But everything went fine
On Sarah’s wedding day.
