About the "DIDJA KNOW?"© Weekly Series
How well do you know your Scripture? St. Jerome is noted for saying "to be ignorant of scripture is to be ignorant of Christ." Your spiritual life will contain a huge vacuum if you do not reflect frequently on God's word!
There are a lot of questions or charges that get thrown at Catholics, who often are caught off guard and who do not know the appropriate answer from Holy Scripture. Therefore, every Catholic should be familiar with "Apologetics," which the Catholic Encyclopedia (on-line) describes as:
a verbal defense against a verbal attack, a disproving of a false accusation, or a justification of an action or line of conduct wrongly made the object of censure.
This series of reflections called "Didja Know?"© will take two basic approaches. (1) A first approach will look at the weekly Sunday mass readings, and provide material which "breaks open" the scripture, and also ties it into official church magisterial teaching (usually the Catechism of the Catholic Church). (2) A second approach will occasionally present a common issue, a question or charge that is routinely asked of Catholics. In response to that question, an Answer will be provided, with documented official Church teaching.
It is hoped that you will find this "Didja Know?"© series helpful. It is intended to be a useful tool to help everyone meditate on the scripture message, and thereby deepen our relationship to Christ. It is also intended to help our families speak the truth with love and with knowledge, in matters of faith and morals.
This series will be presented weekly [although it starts in mid-2003 on this website, the series began in 1997]. If you wish, you may collect these brochures for future use, or use them as an at-home study tool for your family gatherings.
We are aware of many cases in which families copy these to take to shut-ins or those in hospital. Feel free to do so! Deacon Paul Rooney Mary Our Queen Parish, Omaha
