Lees Valley, A pleasant drive

LEES VALLEY,           GRADE: 1. An easy drive but you have to watch the Okuku ford between Okuku saddle and Lees pass. If the river is running dirty take care before crossing. Watch for stock on the Okuku section as the road is not fenced. Single lane formed farm track so watch for oncomming traffic. This area makes a good snow trip in winter.

ACCESS: Public road with several gates.

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE AREA: Lees Valley, named after George William Lee, the first owner of the Wharfdale station near by on the east bank of the Ashley River. An amateur rider, he was known locally as “Jockey Lee”.

OTHER COMMENTS: A pleasant Sunday drive, picnics in Summer, snow in Winter.

FISHING: The mid reaches of the gorge look good but watch out for the sandfly's, some of the most viscous I've ever come across.
