A SHORT HISTORY OF THE AREA:

The route from Waikari to Lake Sumner over Jacks Pass was the route used by early settlers in the 1860,s moving to the West Coast Gold fields over Harper Pass at the head of the Hurunui river. The lake was discovered in 1857 by Canterbury Provincial Engineer, Edward Dobson, and it was presumably he who named it, in honour of the Most Reverend John Bird Sumner, Archbishop of Canterbury 1848–62
