I---- Trout Fishing

Dave Hill, first time out and a 7½lb brown
and a 4½lb Rainbow. How's that for a beginner?

One of the great things about my 4WD is that it takes me to some great places to pursue my other great passion, fishing! The body is no longer able to do the long hard tramps, climb to the tops hunting, but the 4WD still gets me out there. There is nothing better than to cast a line in a river surrounded by some of the best scenery in the world.

"What a valley, what a river and my! what a country"

These pages will contain some of my favorite fishing spots, not a website, just some great fishing places.
I have split the pages into three section to match the Fish & Game Districts:

|| South Canterbury  fishing  District  || North Canterbury fishing District  || West coast Fishing District

Spin Fishing: East Coast and Highcountry Rivers & Lakes
For the East Coast  rivers I uses the following in the clear water of mountain snow fed and spring fed waters & lakes:
Tasmainian Devil Nos. 50 (Frog), 52 (Hornet),  63 (Prettyfish), and for sea run trout at the river mouths try No. 59 (Whitebait).
The old favourite Black and Gold Tobby still works well.
I have been using Rapalas lately. You need to use a Countdown CD5  sinking to get a good cast. They all seem to work. Take the belly hook off to cut down on the snags, at $16 a throw I hate loosing them. Use CD5 Rapala's on a 6lb line and be aware that some monofilament nylons, especially the cheap ones, don't like the "Rapalla knot". I use 6lb Maxima monofilament line. A rule of thumb, the more expensive the mono the better it is.

Clear snow and spring fed streams and rivers are best stalked and fly fished. If you do try spinning use a bright small "Tassie", No 63 (Pretty Fish) on 4lb line is my favourite, or a small Rapalla, CD3 Minnow (Bully imitation), the bright orange "Perch" seems to work well during a fresh when the water is discolored. Don't be disappointed if the don't take them but watching them follow in gives you a real buzz.
