Grandpa's Stories

The piece you see here is a piece I created based on a story in Hidatsa Myth concerning two mythical beings who created a constellation known as the milky way here on my home reservation.
Once long ago a buffalo agreed to race a magical horse by the name of Ember Tail. They started their race with the buffalo in the lead and as they ran they kicked up dust from the cosmos, this path is what we call the milky way today. As time past and the race continued it is thought that many times Ember Tail passed the buffalo for the lead but eventually he "played" out and began to lose to the buffalo.
Thus this is where I have chosen to show you an image wrought by my hands.
Due to this being a Hidatsa myth story and in interest of cultural continuity, I showed this picture to my father, (who told me the above story) for approval ( which he gave) before being shown at the
2004 American Higher Education Consortium where it took an award of excellence
