Here we see another piece of my reviving traditional arts section. It is my very first attempt at traditional basketry in the Hidatsa style of burden work. It was constructed around a year ago in the summer of 2003 from non traditional materials, the wood runners are wicker rattan and the weavers are made from the same material dyed red. The braces are made from wicker rattan core. The dark weavers are interlaced down one side under the basket frame and up the other side. Thus causing an bit and bite effect that is pleasing to the eye. Here I have chose to use the Hidatsa band lighting design with traditional checkered pattern breaks. As you can see It was taken to American Indian Higher Education Consortium and took a award of honorable mention. Which considering the other traditional basketry there is a proud achievement to not only Native thought process but to the Hidatsa who worked so tirelessly to create such a style.
