Tarra's PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) Page

In 1996 I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is a common cause of infertility and effects about 1 out of 10 women, many of whom go undiagnosed.

PCOS is one of the most common hormone disorders among women in their child bearing years. Women with PCOS are at higher risk for ovarian cancer, heart disease, strokes, adult on-set diabetes as well as other serious health problems. Women with PCOS may have one, two, or many of the following symptoms: Infertility, miscarriages (some studies now show that women with PCOS have up to a 63% chance of miscarriage), insulin resistance, weight gain & difficulty losing it, amenorrhea (irregular or no menstrual cycle), endometrial hyperplasia and cancer, facial hair, mood swings, depression, & anxiety problems.

I was extremely lucky to receive successful treatment for the infertility and now have five wonderful children. (3 were with the help of a fertility drug called "Clomid" and my last two were with the help of a medication called "Glucophage" which treats PCOS in general, and has been shown as effective as Clomid in treating the infertility!) Most women with PCOS are not as lucky and have a much more difficult battle in that area. We have been so blessed!

There is NO CURE for this disease and because there isn't a lot of money in it for anyone who cures PCOS, it isn't being studied enough and may never be "cured".

I am now the Director of Online Communities as well as the North Dakota contact for the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome Association. Please contact me at Tarra@PCOSupport.org if I can help you or someone you know in anyway!

Following are links are for more information about PCOS (and more professional info than mine!) If you know someone who may have this disease and not realize it please tell them about this page. You could save a life!
