WHAT DO I DO NOW?

IF YOUR PET IS LOST

Immediately call your area shelters and Humane Societies to report that your pet is missing. Include surrounding areas as animals wander and people who find pets often take them to different parish shelters.

Check the shelters IN PERSON at least every three days.

Ask to check the isolation areas at the shelters and ask employees if your pet is on the "dead list"

Run lost ads in the newspapers (most papers will do this for free, ask).

Check found ads daily, do this for at least six weeks, animals travel and may be in a neighborhood a few days before they are recognized as stray.

Place flyers around your neighborhood and at the major road intersections near your home. Remember, a dog can travel 5 to 8 miles a day, so don't limit the signs to just your neighborhood. MAKE MAJOR PORTIONS OF FLYER ("LOST" AND THE PHONE NUMBER) LARGE ENOUGH TO BE READ FROM A CAR.

Ask your neighbors if they have seen your pet.

Talk to passers-by and stop in at businesses in your area. Check alleys, playgrounds, parks, under parked vehicles and road side ditches, calling your animal as you go. Cats are likely to become stranded in trees or shut in garages, storage sheds or on roof tops.

Alert your mail carrier and paper carrier to be on the lookout for your pet.

Offer a reward if you can.

Call all vets in your area (go through the yellow pages) including emergency clinics.

If your pet is wearing a rabies tag, make sure the vet who vaccinated it has your current phone number.

When your pet is found be sure to "follow up" with all of those people/agencies who were kind enough to help you look.

IF YOU"VE FOUND A PET

Keep the pet that you found either indoors or in a fenced area while you look for its owner. Feed/water the animal daily.

If the animal is hurt or sick, either take it to your local vet or call a humane society or rescue group for help.

Call shelter/humane groups and report finding the pet. Be sure to call and cancel your report when the owner is found.

Place flyers around your neighborhood and at the major road intersections where the pet was found.

If you don't know the breed or the dog or cat ask a vet or expert to help you identify the breed.

Place found ads in the local papers (most papers will do this for free)

Call all vets in the area and report a found pet.

If the pet has a tag, call the number on the tag.

HOW TO PREVENT YOUR PET FROM GETTING LOST

Spay or Neuter as soon as possible. Both male and female pets that are not spayed or neutered are much more likely to go looking for companionship.

Make sure that your pet has on a collar with rabies tag and a current ID tag AT ALL TIMES. Cats can wear stretch collars with flat tags that are riveted directly onto the collar.

Keep cats indoors. When dogs are let outside, they should be in a fenced yard or on a leash. Leash laws apply to cats as well as dogs.

Consider having your pet microchipped. Most vets will microchip your pet at a reasonable cost.
