Cheerleaders Face Adversity
Changes Raise Hopes for Fewer Difficulties in Upcoming Season

As sports teams begin preparing for this year's season, the Washington High School cheerleading squad anticipates several significant changes.
Perhaps the most notable obstacle the team faces is the challenge of replacing varsity coach who recently resigned from the position. According to the associate principal, no reason was given for resignation. The coach was unavailable for comment. The principal stated, "We were unhappy with some of the situations that were occurring; it was time for a change." She continued, "We have no specific qualifications or criteria, although this person must have strong leadership skills and must like dealing with kids. However, he or she does not necessarily have to have been a cheerleader."
Another significant change lies in the tryout process. This year, cheerleaders must maintain a 2.0 grade point average and have no F's; however, they will be held to these standards. "Cheerleading is a year-long extracurricular activity. [The cheerleaders] need to realize that school had better come before anything else."
Despite these sources of adversity, the girls are still looking forward to the Fall season. One member of the squad said, "I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of talent this year's tryouts will produce. I hope things go a lot smoother next year." |
