The Rushing family began as slaves on a farm owned by
a Slave Owner named Rushing that lived in what was
then Anson County - Now "White Store Area" of Union County.

The property is located just at the Anson County and Union County Line off of Huggins Rd on a hill back in the woods, there is a Rushing burial ground there and the remains of an old houes.

There were 3 of the Rushing Brothers (white). One
of them lived in Virginia and was considered an Outlaw
to the war by the Union Army during the Civil war.

This brother was chased into NC. After finding out
that he had a brother in Anson County the Union army
went to this brothers farm (where the slave were that
became the Rushing"s) looking for the Outlaw brother.

When the family refused to tell where the outlaw
brother was, The Army ordered that one(1) person be
killed each day until they found the outlaw brother.
The Army proceeded to execute 3 people before they
were told where the outlaw brother was.

One of the people executed was a Slave.

The Rushing family built monuments of stone for each
person executed and the monuments are still visible today.

At the end of the Civil war when the Slave were freed
they took the name of their slave owner
(which was the custom at the time).

All of the Slaves left the farm walking - going
somewhere, anywhere away from slavery,
some of them walked in a North Easterly direction into
the area that is now Marshville NC, and settled there,
the others walked in South westerly direction towards
what is now Lancaster SC.

Our family came out of the Lancaster group.
