I remember as a child, how I would try,
just for the fun of it!
Street skate, up and down the hill,
hoping that my speed would decrease,
just in time, not to run
the stop sign!
"Wow, what a rush!"
Skates back then had keys.
You had to adjust them,
according to the length
and width of your sneakers.
They didn't have stoppers on the front.
The stopper was you, yourself!
And how skilled you were,
with control of mind and body.
My instincts, saved my life,
quite a few times as well as skills.
Didn't have the protection of...
helments, knee and elbow pads.
When I fell the very first time,
I saw it before it happened
I could have avoided it but somehow,
stupidly I wanted to feel,
what the out come would be.
I didn't break any bones.
Just put a whole in the knee of my jeans,
and knocked a little skin,
off my elbow and hand.
Oh the pavement, didn't soften for me,
not one bit.
It actually angered me more then it hurt.
I could feel the pain,
but the anger made me think.
I thought next time I were to fall,
I would make sure,
it was on the curve grass.
And I would pray,
no dog poop would be there,to greet me.
Ever played street ROLLER DERBY?
In Baltimore, back in the 70's,
during the summer months,
it was as common,
as the ice cream man,
every evening.
My how I miss,
that Good Humor, ice cream truck.
I could hear it coming,
blocks away, by the music it played.
Oh, he sometimes would ring bells.
Sort of like saying...
Last chance to hit your moms up
for dat quater b4 I pull off!
LOL..Sometimes you could see kids,
running the truck down to the next block.
Those were my youthful days!

until I could stand on my own.
I wobbled but didn't fall.
It was your strength,
that renewed mine.
It is your nimbus light,
that still shines,
In the darkest hours.
No matter how far away,
You're the
"Star",
which all evenings await.
