Doula comes from the Greek word meaning "female servant". Today, doulas are women who assist in labor by encouraging and providing emotional support to the mother and those she chooses to have present for this miracle, the birth of her child.
What does a doula do?
A doula is responsible for the non-clinical side of the care of the mother. The doula assists with relaxation, massage, movement, positioning, and visualization.
We recognize childbirth as a key life experience that the mother and father will remember all their lives.
We understand the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labor as well as the partners.
We will assist the Mother and Father in preparing for and carrying out their CHOICES for the birth.
We will stay by the side of the laboring couple throughout the entire labor.
We will provide an objective viewpoint, as well as helping you get the information you need to make decisions that you feel empowered by.
We will facilitate good communication between the laboring Mother, Father, and provider.
Does this mean I can't have medication during labor?
A doula is not there to make medical decisions for you. She is there to assist you and empower you with your choices. She will let you know the pros and cons of all medication and meA doula is responsible for the non-clinical side of the care of the mother.
What if I plan to have my baby at a hospital?
As your doula, I will accompany you to the hospital or birthing center of your choice. I am very familiar with all the hospitals in our area. I will also assist you at home with your doctor/midwife if you choose to have a home birth.
When do I call you?
I ask that you call me when you think your labor is beginning. I will join you at your house when you feel that you need me. I am on call twenty-four hours a day seven days a week. You can always reach me.
What is the cost?
It is our belief that no woman should be denied the value of having a doula present at the birth of her child. We have in the past bartered, donated and used a sliding scale for our services. If you are in a financial situation, please speak to us.
By having us as your doula, you are allowing us to donate our services to women in need, such as unwed mothers, mothers in dire straits and spouses of deployed service members.
The cost of a doula assisting with your labor is $450.
