You say,`I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. Rev. 3:17
And this is the State of the Church: that it is ‘rich’ and does not need the Lords help anymore, for they believe, or have their faith in the ‘dollar.’
How did the Laodicea Church get to be that way? By false teachers within the gates.
This is a topic so dear to the hearts of pastors: The Tithe. This tithe is misapplied in today's church. The tithe was and is an Old Testament requirement and does not belong in the New Testament church. There is much debate about this on the Internet and within the church denominations. And the truth is, that many false teacher teach that ‘money’ is a big part of God’s dealing with man and their blessings. How far from the truth that is.
From ministries like Crown Financial, to churches, its money, money, money. This is why we do not see today, any ‘men of faith’ like those listed in Hebrew Chapter 11. We believe ‘faith’ equates to money. And in God’s Word that is false teaching! “If only we had the money, this ministry can move on to bigger and greater things in the Lord.” Ever heard statements similarly to that one?
This is most likely the key verse that many false teachers used to convince others that the tithe is for today’s believers. It is true that the Old Testament Tithe was for the ‘storehouse’ but for the New Testament, there is a different ‘storehouse’:"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, `How do we rob you?' In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse--the whole nation of you--because you are robbing me. Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Mal 3:8-10
Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth." Jn 4:21-24
The Storehouse has moved from a building to the body of the believer:
"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body." 1Cor 6:19,20The Storehouse today, is a moveable one not one that is fixed. Not one that you have to travel to worship God. This is why God did not instruct the church to incorporate the tithe because there were no building to take care of and no building that God lives in today.
"All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need." Acts 4:32-35This is how God wants us to use money today. This is totally different that what is described in Mal. 3:8-10. It was not to be used on a building, but was ‘distributed to anyone as he need.’ Now if you will notice that the Apostles did not refuse the money or made any statement about only giving 10% (the tithe). As the following verses shows, the money was not to be given for some build but for the SERVICE OF THE SAINTS:
"In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food." Acts 6:1No 10% tithing here:
"So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, "It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word." Acts 6:2-4
"Now about the collection for God's people: Do what I told the Galatian churches to do. On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made." 1Cor 16:1,2Give to help the saints pleases God:
"And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity. For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints. And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God's will. So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But just as you excel in everything--in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us--see that you also excel in this grace of giving." 1Cor 8:1-7Giving makes other saints equal:
"And here is my advice about what is best for you in this matter: Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what he does not have. Our desire is not that others might be relieved while you are hard pressed, but that there might be equality. At the present time your plenty will supply what they need, so that in turn their plenty will supply what you need. Then there will be equality, as it is written: "He who gathered much did not have too much, and he who gathered little did not have too little." 2Cor 8:10-15No tithing for the storehouse here:
"There is no need for me to write to you about this service to the saints. For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting about it to the Macedonians, telling them that since last year you in Achaia were ready to give; and your enthusiasm has stirred most of them to action." 2Cor 9:1,2Again, God love that give cheerfully:
"Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work." 2Cor 9:6-9Again, this money is for the ‘service’ of supplying the needs of God’s people:
This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God. Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, men will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ, and for your generosity in sharing with them and with everyone else. Those who teach that believers must give a tithe is unscriptural:
And in their prayers for you their hearts will go out to you, because of the surpassing grace God has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" 2Cor 9:12-15
If anyone teaches false doctrines and does not agree to the sound instruction of our Lord Jesus Christ and to godly teaching, he is conceited and understands nothing. He has an unhealthy interest in controversies and quarrels about words that result in envy, strife, malicious talk, evil suspicions and constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain. 1Tim 6:3-5Yes, God wants to give for the need of the saints. However, he has never instructed the saints (the church) to give money or tithe to maintain a building.
In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. 1Cor 9:14This does not mean maintaining a building but to give to those who preach the gospel.
Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. 2Cor 2:17
Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, `Who is the LORD?' Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. Pr 30:7-9
Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?" Heb 13:5,6
