One Clear Example of
Abusing Luke 6:38

By John Rhinehart

Chip Ingram, on his program Living On The Edge, did a study on How to Discover Your Spiritual Gifts, Pt2 (10/19/04), as he uses Luke 6:38 totally out of context even though, he himself states that others have used this verse out of context as he states:
“When you use it you get back than what you give. Does that sound biblical? Isn't it. Give and it will be . . See, we always take that verse, Lk 6:38, it applies to money but read Luke 6:28 in context. It’s not a financial context. It’s a timeless principle: give and it will be given unto you. Give what? Give your time; give your heart; give your gift; give your love; give your friendship; ‘Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.’ Give more away that most matters to you and you'll find you'll be given more of that coming back to you.”
Chip accuses others of taking this verse out of context and he does the very same thing to drive his ‘doctrine of giving.” Let God be true and every many a liar. If Chip, and others, would honestly speak the Word of Truth much confusion would fade away. The Word is very clear what we are to ‘give.’ For if one would read verse before it, v37, the answer is clear.
"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. Lk 6:37
If we ‘give’ this type of non-judging; non-condemning and to forgiveness, men will do the same for us. Yet, many ministers use this verse out-of-context to enforce their unbiblical doctrines.
