The Counterfeit Christianity of Today's Evangelicals
"And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?” (Luke 6:46)
[Edited 11/21/04]

Introduction
Before touching on the particulars of the premise expressed in the title of this article (i.e., that modern Evangelicalism is a counterfeit Christianity), it is necessary to first define the subject of it (i.e., the Evangelicals). In this document, an Evangelical is defined as one who professes certain basic tenets of biblical Christianity such as a belief in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His sacrificial, atoning death and bodily resurrection, the Holy Trinity, salvation by faith, and the need for personal conversion. This definition encompasses millions of Americans who practice their religion under the umbrella of a denominational name such as Baptist, Presbyterian, Methodist, or among one of the many lesser-known denominations, as well as in thousands of independent congregations across the United States. This definition excludes such groups as the so-called Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, and Roman Catholics, along with the many liberal denominations, all of whom openly deny, in various ways, some or all of the aforementioned biblical beliefs. An Evangelical congregation is, in the minds of most Americans, a synonymous term for an assembly of Bible-believing Christians.

However, the Christian life, if it be defined in accordance with the Bible, is “a common course of humility, self-denial, renunciation of the world, poverty of spirit, and heavenly affection.” It requires a turning away from the materialistic, entertainment-filled, self-indulgent way of life that is common in modern America. And it is quite obvious to those with “eyes to see” (in the spiritual sense), that the people in today's Evangelical denominations don't live that kind of a life. The truth is that modern Evangelicals live their lives in rebellion to God and in service to their own selfish, worldly desires, and almost the entirety of their religion consists of nothing more than giving lip service to a few basic scriptural truths and making an appearance at a building once or twice per week.

And though it bears the name of Christianity, the fact is that modern Evangelicalism is not biblical Christianity, it is only the religion of self-love with a pseudo-Christian veneer. It is a counterfeit Christianity, which has been redefined so as to accommodate the infatuation that its worldly adherents have with accumulating worldly gain and satisfying their carnal desires, rather than demanding repentance for self-pleasing and requiring mortification of fleshly lusts. And though modern Evangelicals continue to profess the so-called foundational truths of the Bible, in many ways they add to and subtract from the teachings of the Holy Scriptures in violation of God's commandments not to do so (Deut. 4:2, 12:32, Pro. 30:6, Mat. 5:18, Rev. 22:18-19). Just as has been the case numerous times in the past among those who professed godliness, they do nothing more than honor God with their lips, while they have removed their hearts far from Him.

The purpose of this document is to define the typical modern Evangelical and his ways, and also to expose in particular the many anti-scriptural characteristics common to them, that true Christians may more easily discern both them and their counterfeit Christianity from the true Christians and the genuine evangelical faith. It should be kept in mind that the observations above and below regarding the disciples of modern Evangelicalism are generalizations only. They should not be taken as absolutes that are meant to apply to every member of every Evangelical congregation to the same degree and without exception.

A History of Repeated Apostasy in the Church
Just as it was necessary to define the subject of this article before proceeding to expound upon the particulars of its premise, so it is necessary for the reader to first understand that the present apostasy is nothing that the church has not been through before. Throughout history, the church has been repeatedly subverted from within its own ranks, to the point where that which is commonly regarded as the church has degenerated until it is not the church at all, and its supposed worship of God has been reduced to an empty shell of ritualistic formalities which are practiced by those who merely present an external show of religious devotion, and who give lip service to biblical truth, while they habitually ignore God's commandments in their daily lives.

This was the case in the days of Isaiah the prophet, when the children of Israel had rebelled against God and forsaken His commandments:
“Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the LORD, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward.” (Isa. 1:4)

“Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD.” (Isa. 30:8-9)
They were continuing to practice the outward ceremonies of the law of Moses, but even though the ceremonial functions of the Temple worship were instituted by the Lord for the children of Israel, He did not accept them when performed by these sinful people:
"The multitude of your sacrifices—what are they to me?" says the LORD. "I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations--I cannot bear your evil assemblies. Your New Moon festivals and your appointed feasts my soul hates. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. When you spread out your hands in prayer, I will hide my eyes from you; even if you offer many prayers, I will not listen. Your hands are full of blood” (Isa. 1:11-15)
Though in word the multitudes of Israelites professed to trust in God, He said that they were far from Him at heart:

“this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me” (Isa. 29:13)
He called them to repent and obey the word of the Lord:
“Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight! Stop doing wrong, learn to do right! Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow. "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.” (Isa. 1:16-18)
But they did not repent:
“They are prophesying lies to you in my name. I have not sent them," declares the LORD.” (Jer. 29:9)
And so only a remnant was going to be saved:

“Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah.” (Isa. 1:9)

“For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return” (Isa. 10:22)
The same was true in the time of Jeremiah the prophet. All of the people -- even the religious leaders -- dealt wickedly:
“For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.” (Jer. 6:13)
They had forsaken the old paths, and would not return to them:
“This is what the LORD says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, `We will not walk in it.'(Jer. 6:16)
And they took no delight in the word of God:
“To whom can I speak and give warning? Who will listen to me? Their ears are closed so they cannot hear. The word of the LORD is offensive to them; they find no pleasure in it. (Jer. 6:10)
But they continued to go through the motions as if they were true believers. They observed the outward ceremonies as if they believed that doing so would somehow fulfill their obligation to God. But He rejected their false show of worship:
“To what purpose cometh there to me incense from Sheba, and the sweet cane from a far country? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable, nor your sacrifices sweet unto me.” (Jer. 6:20)
God rebuked these disobedient people for trusting in the lie that their worship rituals were acceptable just because they were being performed in the place dedicated to His name:
“Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.” (Jer. 7:4)
And though they took no delight in obeying it, they hypocritically continued to listen to the word of God spoken by the prophets. They professed the love of God with their mouths but in their covetous hearts they were estranged from Him. The Lord revealed their deceit through the prophet Ezekiel (a contemporary of Jeremiah):
"As for you, son of man, your countrymen are talking together about you by the walls and at the doors of the houses, saying to each other, `Come and hear the message that has come from the LORD.' My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice. With their mouths they express devotion, but their hearts are greedy for unjust gain. Indeed, to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but do not put them into practice.” (Eze. 33:30-32)
Many of those who professed to be the people of God -- including prominent church leaders -- showed their professions to be false, not only by rejecting the commandments of the Lord, but also by persecuting the prophets whom God sent unto them telling them to repent:
“But as soon as Jeremiah finished telling all the people everything the LORD had commanded him to say, the priests, the prophets and all the people seized him and said, "You must die!” (Jer. 26:8)
And because they would not repent, only a small remnant of them was spared:
“Jeremiah the prophet and said to him, "Please hear our petition and pray to the LORD your God for this entire remnant. For as you now see, though we were once many, now only a few are left.” (Jer. 42:2)
Likewise, in the days when Jesus Christ walked the earth, many of the Israelites continued to practice the rites of the Temple sacrificial system while rebelling against God's commandments in many ways. In first-century Palestine, the Pharisees were believed to be the most faithful adherents to the biblical religion because of their elaborate shows of pretended adherence to the law of God. Paul said that they were “the most strictest sect” of the Jews' religion (Acts 26:5). That is, they were esteemed to be the denomination, which most exactly observed the precepts of the law. But Christ revealed that the Pharisees were really hypocritical evildoers who only outwardly appeared righteous:
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean. Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean. In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness. (Mat. 23:25-28)
In fact, Christ not only showed that the Pharisees and their ilk were greatly erring from scriptural teaching but he also declared that they were not God's people at all, though they could trace their fleshly lineage back to Abraham:
“I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.”(John 8:37)

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.” (John 8:44)

“He that is of God hears God’s words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.” (John 8:47)
Just as had happened in the days of the prophets, the religion of the Jews in Christ's time had degenerated into the performance of an external show of rituals while “the weightier matters of the law” were ignored (Mat. 23:23), and many of those who identified themselves as God's people, the Jews, really were not Jews at all. They were “of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie” (Rev. 3:9) All of the Jews claimed to be the people of God, but just as in Isaiah's time, many of them only honored God in word, while being far from God in heart. And so Christ condemned them with Isaiah's words:

He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:" `These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” (Mark 7:6)
And though they all professed to be the people of God, the great majority of the Jews rejected the message of repentance preached by Christ and the apostles, just as their fathers had done in the time of the prophets.
"You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! (Acts 7:51)
So Paul applied the words of Isaiah to them:
“Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved.” (Rom. 9:27)
And just as their fathers had persecuted and killed the prophets before him, so they persecuted and killed the greatest Prophet of them all, Jesus Christ:
“Was there ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him” (Acts 7:52)
After the coming of Christ, when the kingdom was extended to the Gentile nations, the same phenomenon occurred. The professing Christians began to turn away from the truth and over the centuries became more and more corrupt until that which was commonly-regarded by men as the church -- the many and far-flung assemblies under the dominion of the Roman pope -- had degenerated into a great synagogue of Satan filled with ungodly men who did little more than give lip service to the faith while performing a series of weekly rituals which they falsely regarded as worship. Though the Romanists could trace their lineage back to the early Christian church, and professed to be the true Christians, they testified that they were not of God by the fact that they greatly added to and diminished from God's commandments, against the express will of God (Deut. 4:2, 12:32). Though God raised up men to testify against the perversions of the professing church, most of the professing Christians never turned from their errors (or turned to new ones), and again only a remnant was saved. And just as the leaders of the pseudo-Jews had persecuted the prophets whom God raised up to testify against their manifold defections from righteousness, so the leaders of the pseudo-Christians persecuted those who preached against their abominations.

The Ungodliness of Today's Evangelicals Described in General
It needs to be understood by the reader that habitual, willful, and unrepentant rebellion against God's commandments is always only an outward manifestation of an inward spiritual condition. Man in his natural state is, at heart, an enemy of God. His will is bitterly opposed to the will of God. Without the supernatural spiritual change that the Bible refers to as being “born again,” (a change which man cannot effect upon himself), he is not able to conform his life to the word of God.
“Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.” (Rom. 8:7)
And thus it is with today's Evangelicals. It is evident from the multitude of ways in which they disregard the word of God, and from the fact there is little difference between their ways of life and the lives of those who do not profess Christ, that the overwhelming majority of them have not been born of God. They have “no heart to live a godly life.” They know nothing of repentance. They know nothing of self-denial. The desire to live a life in service to God and to their fellow man is alien to their hearts. They are covetous and disobedient people who live for their own pleasure -- vainly pursuing their own desires and ambitions, rather than seeking the far more excellent blessings to be found in pursuit of godliness. Their mind-set and way of life is entirely conformed to this world. Because they are unregenerate they do not, and indeed cannot, live their lives in accordance with scriptural precepts.

One of the most obvious manifestations of the Evangelicals' ungodly nature is in their dualistic and anti-biblical concept of worship. The Bible teaches that to worship God is to offer one's self as a living sacrifice to God by devoting his life to the furtherance of God's kingdom and by faithfully applying the commandments of God to his entire life. But today's Evangelicals, in their blindness, have effectively reduced worship to participating in a ”series of daily or weekly devotional activities. The true Christian worships God in spirit at all times and he manifests that spirit of worship by diligently seeking out the will of God in the Holy Scriptures and by conforming his entire life to all of the Bible's teaching. But the Evangelical -- being at heart still in rebellion to God -- partitions the Bible off from his everyday life, and convinces himself in his deluded mind that his few hours of “worship services” somehow bring him closer to the God that he does not know. And this is no less true of the more biblically knowledgeable ones, than it is of the average biblically ignorant Evangelical. Even those among them who profess doctrine that is in accordance with much of the teachings of Scripture, share the same characteristic of partitioning the Bible off almost entirely from their daily lives.

In this regard they are very similar to the professing church in the Middle Ages, according to an historian's description:
“They fulfilled all the external obligations of the faith and they would have been shocked if they had been told they were not good Christians. But they tended more and more to put their religion in a separate compartment where it would have little influence on their daily life.” ("The Course of Civilization” - Strayer, Gatzke, and Harbison)
And, in fact, the tendency for professing Christians to classify their faith is a trait which has repeatedly manifested itself in all ages. Consider the following observation made by William Law in 1729 regarding the professing church of the post-reformation era:
“Many Christians are careful to observe certain times, places, and rituals of worship; but when the service of the church is over, they are but like those that profess no regard for religion. In their manner of life, in their cares and worries, fears and pleasures, indulgences and diversions, it is often impossible to distinguish professing Christians from the rankest unbelievers, until they once again unite to sing of their love and devotion to Jesus. Little wonder that the skeptic makes such false standard-bearers the object of his scorn and jest, because he sees that their devotion goes no deeper than the words they use in song and prayer. How can this be called Christianity, when such a manner of life finds its proper condemnation in every page of the New Testament?”
And so it continues to this day. Observing his everyday way of life, it is virtually impossible to distinguish the modern Evangelical from those who make no profession of the Christian religion, and his attitude to the word of God is 180 degrees opposite from that of the true Christian's. The true Christian diligently searches out the will of God in the Scriptures and diligently applies the teachings therein to all facets of his life, no matter the cost for doing so. He makes himself a piece of clay in the hands of God (See Romans 9:20, 21) by molding himself to all of the Bible's precepts. The counterfeit Christian of Evangelicalism, on the other hand, makes the word of God a piece of clay by molding it to fit his own selfish will. Those parts of Scripture, which would conflict with his comfortable, self-serving life if they were obeyed, are either ignored, or they are distorted by convenient misinterpretation and thereby rendered void. In cases where he is confronted by someone who points out his transgressions of the word of God, he always has numerous excuses at the ready, such as: “That was just a cultural thing,” “That was only for the Jews,” “Things are different now,” “We're under grace not under law,” “God isn't finished with me yet,” “None of the Christians I know do that,” “We can differ on this point because it is not a foundational doctrine,” and many more. And when all else fails, he can always turn to his one-line, catch-all excuse of: “We're all sinners, you know,” as if the fact that true Christians still commit a certain amount of sin through weakness of the flesh is a license for him to willfully ignore the commandments of God. Although he has a copy, or even multiple copies, of the Bible (often modern “easy-to-read” perversions) -- and, in some cases, will even regularly read it -- he irrationally treats the Bible as if it were a “lucky” rabbit's foot by which he will receive blessings for the acts of merely carrying and reading it, all the while ignoring its teachings because he has no heart to obey what it tells him that he must do.

The modern Evangelical gives no thought to self-denial, he's too busy pursuing the American dream of self-fulfillment. He deludes himself into believing that he can be a faithful Christian yet enjoy all of the prosperity and comforts that this life (especially in this nation) has to offer. He wants to be a friend of the world and a friend of God, though the Bible plainly states that to be a friend of the world is to be God's enemy and that such are spiritual adulterers (James 4:4). Though the Scriptures plainly tell him that in order to be saved he must have a faith that makes him willing to forsake all things, including all of his possessions, his own family members, and even his own life (Luke 14:26-33), he is rarely willing to suffer even minor discomfort in order to be faithful to biblical precepts, much less will he ever be willing to suffer the loss of all things that he may win Christ, as was Paul (Philip. 3:8). He does not want to accept “that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God” (Acts 14:22), and no one in his so-called church ever impresses upon him the fact that he must.

He may be a member of one of the few congregations, which teach some accurate scriptural doctrines, and he may have a proper understanding of such things as the sovereignty of God, (although it’s hard to believe the way he does if he truly knows and understands that God is Sovereign) the Holy Trinity, justification by faith, etc. But he has not heard a message, which confronts him with the guilt of his sin and demands that he repent of it, which would serve to either drive him from the assembly or convert him (the Evangelicals don't preach such a message). Therefore, though he continues to attend weekly meetings and perform the outward observances of religious devotion, he has not repented of his sins and he remains unconverted. Consequently, being in his natural state (in the bondage of sin), he is neither willing nor able to conform his life to the will of God, even if he were in an assembly, which taught him how to keep God's commandments in his daily life (he is not, because such discipleship is not practiced among the Evangelicals). Following the example of all the other blind men around him, the Evangelical ignores the many exhortations and warnings in the Scriptures which plainly declare that God's people must diligently seek out and observe all of God's teaching in the Scriptures (Deut. 11:13-17, Deut. 28, Psalm 119:4, John 15:10, Heb. 11:6). He acts as though obeying the will of God is optional, and that the only obligations of his faith are to profess “the foundational truths” of the Bible, and to participate in a few hours of religious ceremonies.

It needs to be mentioned that there are many among the Evangelicals whose religion extends beyond the aforementioned characteristic of merely making an appearance at a building once or twice per week. There are certain of them who, out of zeal for their religion, will do much in service to their particular organization. But as Paul the apostle wrote of some in his day:
“they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge” (Rom. 10:2)
In this statement Paul was referring to his unregenerate brethren according to the flesh who, though they professed to be the people of God, and performed many works, which they believed to be in service to God, actually worshipped Him vainly. And so it is among today's Evangelicals. There are many of them who devote themselves to various forms of ministry work which they believe are being done in service to God, but they, having no spiritual understanding and being largely ignorant of biblical precepts and their proper application, do their works in vain. One need only to examine the many anti-scriptural and worldly “evangelism” programs being zealously practiced by them -- such as
door-knocking interrogation teams,
tent revivals,
stadium crusades,
musical, drama, and video presentations,
sports ministries, and
various “evangelism through entertainment” programs -- to understand the futility of their efforts.
In none of these events does true gospel preaching take place, but in most cases a feel-good message is delivered which is designed to elicit an emotional response from the carnal-minded. Consequently, these activities serve to swell the membership roles of their assemblies with additional unregenerate congregants who produce no fruit of holiness, but true Christian conversions rarely, if ever, occur as a result of them. The Evangelicals who do such things only serve to delude others into a false hope of salvation -- as they themselves are deluded -- and they do not in any way serve God through their efforts. In this they are much like a certain group of first-century religious sectarians of whom it was said: “you compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, you make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Mat. 23:15) It should also be pointed out that there are some who not only loyally and conscientiously attend weekly or semi-weekly ceremonies, and zealously work toward the propagation of their religion, but are also quite diligent in their study of theology. However, there is no value in seeking out scriptural truth, while failing to conform one's life to the precepts found therein, which is the almost universal trait of the more educated men among the Evangelicals. God condemned this mindset through the prophet Isaiah:
"Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet. Declare to my people their rebellion and to the house of Jacob their sins. For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God. They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them. Isa. 58:1-2)
Though they were transgressing the law of God in many ways, they delighted “in approaching to God” and learning “the ordinances of justice” as if they were “a nation that did righteousness” which “forsook not the ordinance of God.” This is certainly the case with many of the more intellectual disciples of Evangelicalism who “strain at gnats while swallowing camels” by endlessly speculating on points of theological minutiae, while failing to keep the simplest of God's commandments during their daily lives.

Of course, in spite of all of the evidence to the contrary, the Evangelicals really do believe that they are Christians. Despite the biblical warning against doing so (2 Cor. 10:12), they judge themselves by comparing themselves to the other professing Christians around them. The Evangelical looks at all of the other people in his congregation and he sees that they are just like him. They all call themselves Christians, so he thinks that he is a Christian, too. Because he thinks, speaks, acts, and looks just like the other deluded fools around him, he thinks that he is safe. He never goes to the Bible to determine what a faithful Christian really is, because if he did so he would be forced to conclude that the people to whom he is comparing himself are not Christians, and neither is he.

A Counterfeit Gospel for a Counterfeit Christianity
At this point it might be objected that the preachers of Evangelicalism preach from the Bible and they stress the need for one to be born again. And since God has promised that His word shall not return unto Him void (Isa. 55:11), it might be asked how it can be possible that the overwhelming majority of the Evangelicals have not been converted.

Faithful biblical preaching is communicating scriptural truth in a doctrinally accurate manner and also in following the example set forth by the biblical preachers as to how that truth is to be communicated. Almost all of the Evangelical preachers sprinkle Bible verses into their preaching and there are some truths (among many errors) communicated in many of their sermons, but very few of them accurately expound biblical doctrine with any degree of thoroughness and consistency, and none of them preach the gospel according to biblical example.

Although it is not the preached word which regenerates, it is important that the gospel be preached in accordance with biblical example in order to bring forth the fruits of faith and repentance, and it cannot be expected that the Lord will give increase where it is not. True gospel preaching contains several elements, all of which are essential to converting sinners. Those elements are:
(1) a defining of particular sins by the word of God and an attempt to convince the hearers of their guilt of those sins,

(2) a declaration of what the Bible says about God's punishment for sin

(3) a declaration of both the need for repentance and of the forgiveness of sins through faith in Christ, and

(4) a clear command to repent and believe.
If any of these elements are left out, the message becomes ineffective. If sin is not properly defined, attempts to convince sinners of their guilt will fail. If they are not convinced of their sinfulness, they will not tremble with the fear of suffering God's wrath. If they have no fear of suffering God's wrath, they will not yearn for forgiveness and desire to turn away from sin. And if they do not yearn for forgiveness and desire to turn away from sin, they will not obey the command to “repent you and believe the gospel.”

The Evangelical preachers declare God's forgiveness through faith in Christ, but they only vaguely define sin and refer to it in an indirect and non-convicting way. They do not thoroughly expound upon the commandments of God, they do not give explicit examples of ways in which those commandments are transgressed, they do not plainly declare the frightening reality of God's wrath and punishment for sinners, and they do not demand from their hearers God's requirement for repentance of sin. Thus, they preach a feel-good message, which is really a counterfeit gospel because it does not contain the unpleasant elements of truth that are ordinarily necessary for conversions to occur. Why do they preach such a message? Most likely because preaching a convicting, confrontational message of repentance is very offensive to many people. It would, therefore, serve to drive many of their congregants away, and likely cost them their jobs. So in giving diligence to avoid offending sinners, they shrink back from confronting them with the unpleasant truth that they need to hear, and thereby they offend the God whom they claim to serve. For this reason, few, if any, true conversions are occurring in today's Evangelical congregations. Not that God can't grant repentance without the gospel being properly preached (no doubt, He can do so without preaching at all). God can use unfaithful preachers to save sinners, if He chooses to do so. But it is very unlikely that He will bless their preaching with an increase. When there is no repentance preached, we should not ordinarily expect repentance to be produced, and when no repentance is produced, it is certain that there is no forgiveness of sins. But it might be further objected that the preachers of modern Evangelicalism talk about sin and repentance, and sometimes even quote the biblical commands to repent.

It is true that they speak about sin but, as stated above, when they do so it is only in a non-confrontational way. They will sometimes make general first-person plural statements such as: “We are all sinners,” or third-person references to instances of sin in the Bible such as: “What he did was sinful,” or third person references to sins prevalent in American society such as: “What they do is wrong.” But they very rarely, if ever, look the people in their audience in the eyes and make direct, confrontational, second-person statements such as: “Many of you here today are guilty of this particular sin, and you need to repent of it.”

Furthermore, Evangelicals rarely, if ever, properly define sin. Consequently, many sins go largely unnoticed. For example, many of their preachers will point out the truth that “you can't claim to be a Christian and live like the devil.” And a man who is, for example, a habitual drunkard and fornicator would eventually come under some kind of church discipline in most of their congregations (although it is doubtful that he would be disciplined according to scriptural precepts). On the other hand, a man who greedily pursues worldly prosperity, lives for his own pleasure and gain, and knows nothing of self-denial, would, if ever, be disciplined in an Evangelical congregation. The covetous man is just as much “living like the devil” as the drunken fornicator, and Christians are commanded to turn away from both (1 Cor. 5:11), but the covetous man's sin is not recognized in their congregations because many of his fellow congregants are engaging in similar behavior, and no one ever clearly confronts them with their sin -- much less do they require repentance of it.

It is also true that some of the their preachers occasionally will speak about repentance. But preaching repentance is more than merely preaching sermons, which teach truths about repentance. One can teach about repentance without actually telling anyone to repent. For instance, in a sermon about repentance a preacher can show where it is exemplified in the Bible and how it was preached in the Bible, and he can even quote the biblical passages in which the prophets and apostles told their hearers to repent, yet never directly confront his audience with their own sinfulness and specifically tell them to repent. In other words, a man can preach a sermon, which teaches truths about repentance, yet do so in a detached doctrinal manner or in an otherwise non-confrontational way, which produces no conviction in his hearers and, therefore, does not produce repentance. This is the case with the preachers of Evangelicalism, if they talk about repentance at all.

Though it cannot be denied that many of the sermons preached by them contain a certain amount of truth and are in accordance with the Bible on some points, there are also many heretical doctrines being mixed in with the truth that they preach. However, the greatest infidelity of the modern Evangelical preachers lies not so much in what they declare, but rather in what they fail to declare. For example, in their preaching they are often heard making declarations such as: “We are all guilty before God.” or “You must repent of your sins.” Although these statements are true, they are only generalizations which are too vague, in and of themselves, to produce convictions of guilt and bring forth repentance in those who hear them. It is obvious that men cannot repent of their wrongdoing unless they understand exactly what it is that they have done wrong. Therefore, they must hear preaching which exposes the guilt of particular sins and demands repentance for them, rather than preaching which only speaks of sin and repentance in general terms. The message that sinners need to hear, and which today's Evangelical preachers fail to declare, is one in which individual commandments of God are expounded upon, specific examples of ways in which those commandments can be transgressed are given, and the audience is confronted -- in direct, second-person terms -- with the fact that each one among them who is guilty of the particular sins just defined, must face up to his guilt and turn from those sins if he is to be saved from the wrath of God.

Likewise, it is useless to proclaim general exhortations of the Christian's responsibility to live a holy life in obedience to the will of God -- which modern Evangelicals sometimes do -- unless one thoroughly expounds upon the commandments of God, both teaching and exemplifying how to put those commandments into practice throughout a Christian's everyday life -- which modern Evangelicals never do. And even this will not be wholly effective if those who remain unrepentant, habitually ignore the commandments of God, and continue to live for their own pleasure, are not disfellowshipped from the congregation according to biblical principles of church discipline, but are instead allowed to remain among, and thereby infect, those who in godly sincerity conform their lives to His will. But church discipline is another point on which today's Evangelicals completely fail to fulfill scriptural obligations, and considering their level of scriptural disobedience, one must wonder if there would be a man left standing among them if such discipline were to be uniformly practiced.

But lest the reader mistakenly think that the aforementioned observations regarding today's gospel preaching are peculiar to the writer of this document, or that this form of preaching is something which has cropped up only in the last few years, this quote of Arthur Pink is provided which was excerpted from a tract entitled “The Gospel of Satan” written by him over fifty years ago:
“A yet more specious form of Satan's gospel is to move preachers to present the atoning sacrifice of Christ and then tell their hearers that all God requires from them is to ‘believe’ in His Son. Thereby thousands of impenitent souls are deluded into thinking that they have been saved. But Christ said, ‘Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish’ (Luke 13:3). To ‘repent’ is to hate sin, to sorrow over, to turn from it. It is the result of the Spirit's making the heart contrite before God. None except a broken heart can savingly believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Again, thousands are deceived into supposing that they have ‘accepted Christ’ as their ‘personal Saviour’, who has not first received Him as their LORD. The Son of God did not come here to save people in their sins, but ‘from their sins’ (Matthew 1:21). To be saved from sins, is to be saved from ignoring and despising the authority of God, it is to abandon the course of self-will and self-pleasing, it is to ‘forsake our way’ (Isa. 55:7). It is to surrender to God's authority, to yield to His dominion, to give us over to be ruled by Him. The one who has never taken Christ's ‘yoke’ upon him, who is not truly and diligently seeking to please Him in all the details of his life, and yet supposes that he is ’resting on the Finished Work of Christ’ is deluded by the Devil.”

Particular Anti-Christian Traits Found Among Today's Evangelicals
Listed below are some of the many ways in which the beliefs and practices of today's Evangelicals differ from the beliefs and practices of true Christians. One should keep in mind that the effects of ungodliness are not to be confused with the cause. As stated earlier in this document, habitual, willful, and unrepentant rebellion against God's commandments is always only an outward manifestation of an inward spiritual condition. The Evangelicals' ungodly ways are only a testimony to the fact that they have not been born of God. The following is a list of some of the more obvious of their many ungodly traits, that the godly may more easily recognize them and their counterfeit Christianity. Again, it should be kept in mind that the observations below regarding the adherents of modern Evangelicalism are generalizations only. They should not be taken as absolutes that are meant to apply to every member of every Evangelical congregation to the same degree and without exception.

Christian principles of self-denial and sacrifice are largely alien to modern Evangelicals. Many covetously pursue wealth and material things, live for the fulfillment of their own ambitions and desires, and spend much of their time entertaining themselves. But the Scriptures condemn those who live for pleasure as being dead already (1 Tim. 5:6), and the covetous are said to be idol worshippers who have no inheritance in the kingdom of God (Eph. 5:5).

The true worship of God is not limited to certain times and places, and it does not consist of the performance of outward rituals. True worship is an inward spiritual love of God which the believer bears in his heart at all times, and which he manifests by diligently observing the commandments of God in all facets of his life. But of this worship, the great majority of today's Evangelicals know nothing. They have a dualistic concept of the worship of God in which worship is thought to be the performance of devotional ceremonies for brief periods in particular situations. Thus, one hears them erroneously refer to weekly church meetings as “worship services,” and they make an anti-biblical delineation between what they call their “spiritual life” and the other parts of their lives in which the teachings of the Bible are largely ignored.

The preachers of modern Evangelicalism preach a "false feel-good" gospel which does not confront those in the audience with their sins and does not demand repentance from its hearers. Thus, it fails to produce true conversions (this has been more fully explained under the previous heading).

Among today's Evangelicals, the Christian's responsibility to keep the commandments of God is treated as if it is an option rather than an obligation. Though they may deny it with their words, they act as though Jesus Christ not only fulfilled the law but also destroyed it completely, and that Christians are now free to do whatever is right in their own eyes. Many of them go so far as to portray those who diligently observe the commandments as being guilty of sinful legalism or of trying to earn salvation by works.

The adherents of Evangelicalism are largely "ignorant" of the Holy Scriptures. There are some, who can quote facts and figures from the Bible and recite Bible verses, but very few of them understand the Bible well enough to compose an exegetical defense of their beliefs, and many of them believe that they have no responsibility to do so. This, they think, is the job of the professional clergymen. But those who claim that their beliefs are derived from the Bible must be able to establish and defend them from the Bible if they are going to profess them as truth. However, the great majority of Evangelicals can do nothing more in support of their professed beliefs than cough up a “proof text” or two (at best), and when further questioned state: “You'll have to ask my pastor about that.”

As is the case with all false forms of Christianity, apostate Evangelicalism makes the word of God subordinate to the teachings of man. This is usually manifested in one or more of the following ways:

(1) Loyalty to the doctrines of a particular sect or creed, regardless of the fact that the adherent is unable to biblically exegete said doctrines himself,

(2) imposition upon the Bible of modern “politically correct” (i.e., worldly) concepts of truth and morality, and a refusal to abandon these presuppositions when they are shown to disagree with the word of God,

(3) adherence to an artificial and inflexible method of Bible interpretation, to which the Scriptures must be conformed, regardless of the inconsistencies that the system creates.

If Evangelicals have a test of faithfulness at all, it is one in which profession is overemphasized, and practice is de-emphasized. That is, they give credence to the doctrines that one professes to believe, but little or no attention is paid to the daily practice of godly living, or lack thereof. In most cases, as long as one expresses agreement with a statement of faith (whether that statement is brief or lengthy, modern or ancient), and refrains from the habitual practice of the most blatant forms of wickedness, he is counted a Christian.

Modern Evangelicalism is sectarian in nature. Rather than having one Christian church teaching one system of doctrine and having numerous local congregations, as in the Bible, Evangelicals divide themselves into multitudes of sects (denominations) which have no connection to one another, and teach many different and conflicting doctrines, yet are all acknowledged by them to be branches of one Christian church.

An anti-scriptural essential/nonessential doctrinal delineation is almost universally maintained throughout Evangelicalism. Because they cannot come to agreement on matters of the faith, they have reduced Christianity to a list of 4-6 basic doctrines that are deemed “essential” by them. There is no biblical justification for such a distinction, but it helps them to create an artificial semblance of unity because it allows them to set aside doctrines on which they disagree, rather than come to a true unity based on mutual adherence to the truth. And all who profess these few “essential” beliefs are counted as Christians by them, regardless of how many other biblical doctrines they pervert or how many of God's commandments they ignore.

A false concept of love is commonly held by today's Evangelicals. To many of them, loving people is accepting them “just as they are,” and to confront them with their sins and tell them that they must repent, is considered unloving and sinfully judgmental. Thus they, in effect, equate expressing love with tolerating sin. But to love our fellow Christians is to correct them of their sinful ways, not to leave them in sin; and to love God is to admonish our fellow Christians when they break His commandments, not to look the other way when they are broken.

Biblical principles of separation are almost completely ignored by today's counterfeit Christians. They have fellowship with their heathen and nominal Christian relatives and friends. They send their children to schools and colleges populated with non-Christian students and ungodly teachers. And they fail to separate themselves, as the Scriptures require, from those who profess Christ but continue to live in habitual sin, and from those who profess heretical beliefs. And it is certain that Evangelicals do not in any way consider themselves to be a separate society. They refer to the heathen society in which they live as “our society.” And so they pledge allegiance to it, elect the ungodly leaders of it, enforce the unjust laws of it, and kill other people in wars for it.

Evangelicals have a very shallow form of fellowship. Most of them are strangers to the other members of their churches outside of the few hours of congregational assembly. They want to continue to live an individualistic life rather than being part of a close-knit fellowship (as believers were in the biblical Christian churches), so they limit their fellowship to an hour or two of superficial conversation per week. The last thing the Evangelicals want is to be in a church where they would be expected to obey the scriptural commands to “be subject one to another” (1Pet. 5:5), “confess your faults one to another” (James 5:16), “pray one for another” (James 5:16), “bear ye one another's burdens” (Gal. 6:2), “love one another” (John 15:17), “admonish one another” (Rom. 15:14), “exhort one another” (Heb. 3:13), and “teach one another” (Col. 3:16). They would rather have the professional ministry handle most of these things, or ignore these precepts altogether.

In keeping with their dualistic mindset, today's Evangelicals make a division between biblical precepts and secular laws, and they see no evil in being involved in the enacting or enforcing of civil ordinances which add to or subtract from the commandments of God. But it is wrong to punish other men for things that the Scriptures do not define as evil, and wrong to excuse men from being punished for things that the Scriptures do define as evil. Christians should obey every ordinance of man, even those that lack biblical justification, unless such obedience requires the commission of a sinful act. But they cannot be involved in legislating or enforcing anti-scriptural laws, and anti-scriptural forms of punishment, upon others. Evangelicals do not recognize these limitations and they, to a large extent, derive their concepts of law from the corrupt and ever-changing ordinances of the heathen government which rules over them, rather than from the pure and never-changing word of God.

Evangelicals often view sin as something less than a manifestation of evil, and thus they excuse it rather than demand repentance for it. This is largely due to the assimilation of the false teachings of heathen psychology into their beliefs. For instance, it is not unusual to find Evangelicals who believe that the evil of gluttony is merely an “eating disorder,” and that habitual drunkenness is caused by the “disease of alcoholism.” In their eyes, sin does not need to be repented of, it merely requires therapy. But there is no repentance for sin where repentance is not demanded, and without repentance there can be no forgiveness of sin.

Many of today's Evangelicals have mystical beliefs incorporated into their so-called Christianity. It's not uncommon to hear them say “I felt led by the Lord” to do this or even “God told me” to do that, as if they have received some kind of supernatural guidance or revelation as to what actions they should take. But in reality, they are only following their own will and ascribing it to the direction of God. The Lord gives His people wisdom through the knowledge of His Word and the understanding of His Spirit, and He teaches them by putting them into circumstances where their wisdom is exercised. He does not lead His people through feelings or impressions, and all forms of supernatural communication have ceased now that we have the complete revelation of God in the Holy Scriptures.

There is a tendency among Evangelicals to pervert the Holy Scriptures through the production and use of paraphrases and dumped-down, sometimes gender-neutralized, translations. They often refer to the Bible as the word of God but most of them do not understand what this means, and they do not reverence it as if it really is. For this reason, they place a premium on ease of reading rather than accuracy of translation.

Biblical principles of church discipline are almost entirely ignored, and it is an extremely rare event for anyone to be disfellowshipped from an Evangelical congregation. Not only do they tolerate and overlook one another's sins, but they are largely unaware of them due to the fact that they are strangers to one another outside of their few hours of congregational gatherings.

There is a great deal of worldly, anti-scriptural “evangelism” being practiced in Evangelicalism through music, drama, sports, games, etc., but little or no biblical evangelism, which is nothing more or less than preaching the gospel according to scriptural example.

The Christian church has a God-mandated responsibility to provide for those in need among them. But the elderly and indigent among Evangelicals are largely supported by funds involuntarily collected from unbelievers in the form of Social Security, Medicare, etc, and by insurance plans into which Evangelicals pool their money with the heathen. Rarely, if ever, are they supported entirely by their congregations, which often devote much of their money to grandiose building projects and many other biblically-unsupportable ventures.

Evangelicals do not practice the voluntary sharing of possessions as the biblical Christian church did, and some of them even wickedly equate the practice with ungodly government-mandated socialism or communism.

Festival days which have no biblical foundation, are of pagan origin, and are blasphemously labeled as Christian (e.g., X-Mass, Easter, etc.), are wholeheartedly celebrated by today's Evangelicals.

The meetings of today's so-called Evangelical churches bear very little resemblance to the simple meetings of the early Christian churches. Their formal and ritualistic “worship services” are often more like highly choreographed theatrical presentations, conducted in plush, cathedral-like temples, in which the congregants are little more than spectators.

Most, if not all, of today's Evangelical denominations have instituted non-biblical requirements for church officers while also setting aside biblical requirements. For example, most of them insist that pastors have college and/or seminary degrees, but very few require any level of skillfulness in doctrinal exposition.

Many extra-biblical offices, and in many cases entire administrative bureaucracies, have been added by Evangelicals to the two biblical offices of elder and deacon.

The Scriptures forbid the exaltation of men through the use of religious titles, but this is a common practice among today's Evangelicals.

Evangelicals usually have one preeminent man among them who effectively rules the congregation, rather than several men who are of equal rank, as in the biblical Christian churches. Often a hierarchy of authority exists in their assemblies (Senior Pastor, Associate Pastor, etc.), which is against biblical prohibition. And even in congregations which have a plurality of elders, it is usually the case that one of them has greater authority and, in effect, rules over the others. Thus, they follow the example of the dictatorial Diotrephes who is condemned in the Scriptures, rather than the example of the apostolic church.

An anti-biblical clergymen/laymen delineation is maintained among most of the their congregations (though it is not always explicitly stated as such). In the biblical churches, pastors and teachers were local men who were members of the church exercising their particular gifts. But in Evangelicalism, the pastorate consists of a distinct class of men who are usually recruited from outside of the assembly, some of whom make a lifelong career of traveling from congregation to congregation as professional dispensers of religious services.

Those who act as pastors among the Evangelicals, are most often trained in distant seminary schools instead of discipled in the local congregations according to New Testament example.

It is often taught that the practice of giving ten-percent of one's income to the church (tithing), is obligatory upon the adherents of Evangelicalism. Their leaders do not trust the congregants to willingly provide enough money to pay for their salaries and bloated congregational budgets, so they have conveniently imported this Old Testament ordinance into the New Testament church.

In most cases, neither baptism nor the Lord's supper are practiced according to scriptural example among modern Evangelicals

Evangelicals often allow, and sometimes even encourage, their women to forsake wifely and motherly responsibilities, and place their children in day care facilities, in order to pursue careers outside of the home.

The Bible forbids women from wearing mannish clothing and sporting short hair. But both are commonplace among today's Evangelicals.

Scriptural requirements for the physical disciplining of children are often disregarded by Evangelicals.

If Evangelicals attempt to teach anything of the word of God to their children, they often do so through a conduit of pretense, nonsense, and levity (e.g., games, videos, cartoons, coloring books, puppet shows, etc.) They have no reverence for the word of God, and their children certainly won't.

Biblical admonitions to stay out of debt and not lend or borrow with usury (interest), are almost entirely ignored among Evangelicals today, both individually and congregationally.

Evangelicals often profane the Holy Scriptures and the names of God by using them as slogans on bumper stickers and T-shirts, and even inserting them into well-known advertising jingles.

The use of idolatrous icons and symbols (e.g., crosses, representations of “angels,” pictures of “Jesus”, etc.) is widespread among Evangelicals, and such things are often found on their web sites, upon their printed material, and in their meeting places .

Modesty in dress is an alien principle to modern Evangelicals. Many of them think nothing of having their women exhibit themselves in a skimpy bikini bathing suit.

Competitive athletics programs, which teach ungodly principles to children, are wholeheartedly endorsed and practiced by Evangelicals.

A common practice among Evangelicals is that they “Christianize” the filthy, foolish, and otherwise ungodly things of the world so that they might partake in them. In their minds, cleaning up the words a bit and applying a Christian label can sanctify any form of entertainment that the heathen enjoy. (e.g., “Christian” rock music, “Christian” romance novels, "Christian" radio, etc.)

Evangelicals often attribute evil to certain substances and forbid their moderate use in contradiction to the word of God (such as alcoholic beverages and tobacco), while hypocritically allowing the moderate use of other substances (such as the stimulant beverages coffee and tea, as well as sedative, pain-killing, and anti-depressant drugs).

The so-called churches of the Evangelicals are usually incorporated by them as if they are businesses, thereby making the heathen civil government their head. This is done for the sake of receiving a tax break for members of the congregation.

Erroneous references to buildings and locations as if they are holy places (e.g., the church meeting house is “a house of God,” the room where the congregation assembles is “the sanctuary,” and Palestine is “the Holy Land”), is another trait common to modern Evangelicalism. Whether intentional or not, such misapplication of biblical nomenclature serves to promote a superstitious attachment to edifices and parcels of land.

The practice of denominating through the use of a sectarian and/or a congregational name, is a practice which is not found in the Bible, but is universally practiced by today's Evangelical organizations.
