*********INTRODUCTION*********
In the home of Mr. John Wimbush---------In a few minutes I will be
interviewing him to get a better understanding of how regular people lived
their lives, coped with changes and crisis, and understood their role in the
world, but before I begin I think it is important that we know a little bit
about your background, Mr. Wimbush. So, Mr. Wimbush, why don’t we start with
the names of your parents?
My father was named William A. Wimbush. My mother was named Lilly
Wimbush.
Do you have any brothers and sisters?
It was eleven of us.
How many brothers?
I had 3 brothers and that
would make seven sisters.
Where is your birthplace?
What city in
I guess it was in
How long have you lived in
I have lived in
Can you recall the date of the first television?
I would say it’s somewhere around 1945.
Describe the first television and tell me how it’s different from
today’s television?
Yes, I think when I was first introduced to television; my brother
had one and he lived in
Name a few household appliances and tell how they have changed
your life?
The television- it opened up our vision to things that were going on
in other parts of the world. Anytime you have knowledge of the things that’s
going on it’s a great impact on your life. The washing machine- I like washing
machines and dryers where you can wash your clothes dry them and put them back
on our wash your clothes and dry them and put them back on the bed. The
telephone has been a very important thing in life. You can get in touch with
your friends. With me being a old bachelor I can just stay here and call and
not have to travel or walk several miles for my date. I can stay at home on my
date and talk and stay in contact with my church members, even though they live
on the other end of the county. It just made it so much more comfortable that
you can stay and have everything right in front of your dwelling.
We all know that computers are used for many different things in
many different places, but do you feel that computers have affected the country
in a positive or negative way?
I think they have affected the country in a positive way, but I am
frightened by the negative ways that they can be used.
What type of negative ways frightens you?
Hackers, people stealing others identity, people forging stuff,
having people come up with dates of young children and leading them off some
place and kidnapping them. It’s so many things because it can be used for a
criminal act as well as positive. I am thinking about that because they were
talking about how many ways people can use computers for the wrong reasons.
