Read this before shopping at Home Comfort on Glenwood Avenue in Raleigh NC

Ever have one of those experiences when you get screwed no matter what you do?

My story starts with shopping for a new mattress. All I wanted was something that slept better than our old one. Since we bought the old one at Home Comfort, I decided to try them again. . . . .Big Mistake.

I should have known right off that I was going to get screwed when this Gary Condit look-alike started showing me mattresses. I told him that I was looking for a full sized mattress for me and my wife. Right away he starts telling me how much better off we would be to switch to a Queen size (and for only a little more money).

"Our bed is an antique and it isn't wide enough for a queen size mattress", I argued. "No problem", he said, "You can buy these adjustable bed frames that will fit right on your bed and make it wide enough for a queen sized mattress." "You'll be amazed at how much better you'll both sleep with all the extra room", he added. It sounded really good to me (must have been groggy from not sleeping well) and so I spend extra bucks for a wider mattress and an adjustable bed frame.

Two days later, the delivery guys show up. They bring in the new mattresses, take out the old ones, put the new frames on the bed, and toss the new mattresses on. Well, the bed frames work great as far as making the bed wider but the new mattress and box springs are way taller than the old ones were, plus the new frames were higher off the floor as well. The box springs themselves came up as high as the foot board of the bed and the mattress was on top of that. Standing next to the bed, the mattress comes up above my waist! I said something along the lines of " I had no idea they were so tall". The delivery guys laughed and said that a lot of people were shocked when they saw that because in the store the mattresses are on floor, even if there's a bed frame around them.

So when the wife gets home and sees that she's going to need a stepstool to get into bed, we head back to Home Comfort to have a talk with the Condit-look-alike-salesman. When we tell him our problem, he laughs (Home Comfort is just full of funny people) and says, "Yes that's a pretty common thing that happens when folks get new mattresses. Not only are they making them bigger now but you also stepped up a size as well". (He didn't bother to mention this little fact when he was SELLING the mattress) Then he goes into this story about one lady who had the same problem and twisted her ankle getting out bed because she forgot how high up she was sleeping. He seemed to think this was particularly funny. I didn't see the humor but at this point not much was funny anyway.

"So what can we do now", we asked. "Well", our friendly smiling salesman replied, "We can't take the mattress back. I do have nice queen sized bed on sale I can sell you but it'll have to be ordered and it takes two weeks to get here".

We graciously declined his offer . . .

In the end we did buy a new bed from a really nice salesman at Bedroom Express (right across Glenwood Avenue from Home Scumfort). We plan to get the whole suite eventually but it WON'T be from HOME SCUMFORT and it WON'T be from any salesman who looks like a politician.
