PATRIOT GIRLS PREP FOR STATE PLAYOFFS
By Charlie Bergman: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, April 30th, 2008
The 10th-ranked in 4-A Pinecrest girls will be seeking their 16th victory in a row when they entertain Seventy-First in a Mid-Southeastern Conference soccer match this evening at 6 p.m.
In a preliminary contest at 4 p.m., the Southern Middle and West Pine Middle School teams square off.
Pinecrest is headed for a first-round state 4-A playoff match against the fourth seed from the Tri-8 Conference next Tuesday.
Last Friday night, the Patriots moved to 16-1-1 overall with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Cary (4-12), a member of the Tri-8.
The Patriots took an early lead when Lyndsey Anderson finished a pass from Sarah White. But the Imps tied the game before halftime on a direct kick, and then took a 2-1 lead early in the second period on another direct kick.
The visitors maintained the advantage until the Pats' Latanya Cain scored her 41st and 42nd goals of the season during the final 10 minutes of the match.
With its 11th consecutive conference title already clinched, the Patriots take a 12-0 league mark into tonight's game against Seventy-First. They complete conference and regular-season play with a home makeup game against Westover at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Pinecrest has outscored its opponents 108-16 this year and posted 11 shutouts. The Patriot record for the most wins in a row in a season is 21, set by the 2004 squad.
The Pinecrest junior varsity team went into Tuesday's game against Cardinal Gibbons with a record of 11-1-1. Coach Ray Blatz's squad finished conference play with a record of 9-0, allowing just one goal the entire season.
A challenging non-league schedule resulted in wins over East Chapel Hill (its varsity is ranked No. 1 in 4-A) and Lumberton. The Pats tied Hoggard and suffered their only loss to Leesville Road.

Season:   Goals Scored: 108    Goals Allowed: 16     Overall Record: 16-1-1    Conference Record: 12-0-0
