PATRIOT GIRLS CLAIM WIN OVER RICHMOND COUNTY
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, April 12th, 2006
All of the scoring was in the first half as the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team grabbed a 5-1 conference victory at Richmond County Monday evening.
Latanya Cain scored three times in the last 19 minutes of the first half to break the match open against the Raiders. She goes into tonight’s 7 p.m. contest at home against Hoke County with 31 goals and 13 assists for the season. The sophomore needs two more goals to tie the team record of 33 she co-holds with Laura Peters.
The win improved Pinecrest to 9-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 12-3-1 overall this season. It was the Patriots’ 67th consecutive conference victory. Richmond drops to 5-5-0 and 8-9-0.
After a handball by one of the Richmond players in the penalty box, Fields opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a penalty kick. It was the senior’s 13th goal of the season. A few minutes later, Lynch picked up her 12th, finishing a cross off the foot of Brittney Dishner with her first touch.
The Raiders quickly countered with a score by Amber Teeters, making it 2-1 before Cain went on her three-goal spree. Katelyn Burwell went most of the way in the goal for the Patriots with Morgan Saunders, finishing up.
Tonight’s varsity match will be preceded by a jayvee contest between the two teams, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Pinecrest jayvee team remained unbeaten in league play with a 5-2 victory over Richmond.
An effort is being made to move the starting time of Thursday’s non-conference match against Lee County up to 4 p.m. There is no jayvee game scheduled for that evening.
Broughton, 13-0-1, the first-ranked 4-A team in the state has shut out three more opponents since defeating the Pinecrest 6-1 10 days ago.
The goal scored by Cain in that match remains the only one scored against the team from Raleigh this season.
