The Pinecrest girls’ soccer team trailed most of the way before defeating Jack Britt 3-2 in overtime Wednesday night.
Sara Cole tapped in a cross from Erin Cooper four minutes into the first 10-minute overtime for the game winner.
Nikki Jones launched a long, high shot from the left side in the 71st minute to draw the Patriots even at 2-2.
The victory keeps the Pats’ Mid-Southeastern Conference slate clean at 3-0, while Jack Britt, 4-3-1 overall, was playing its first league match of the season.
On a night of frustration that saw visiting Pinecrest hit the post with shots numerous times, and have two goals disallowed by offside calls, the Bucs’ scored twice on free kicks.
Melissa Lewis gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute when her direct kick from about 22 yards landed high in the net. The Patriots tied it in the 32nd minute on a goal by Katie Fields off a pass from Toni Giangrande.
But six minutes later, the Bucs were awarded an indirect kick in the Patriot penalty area on an obstruction call. Again Lewis connected and it stayed that way until the late goal by Jones.
Jack Britt goalkeeper Rosemary Perez kept her team in the game as the Patriots out-shot their hosts by a wide margin. Pinecrest goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell saw only one shot other than the free kicks.
Perez and the Patriots’ Lisa Southerland both had to leave the game with injuries.
In the opener, the Pinecrest junior varsity squad handed the Bucs their first loss of the season. With Brittany Dishner and Sarah Patnode providing the goals, the Patriots posted a 2-1 win in remaining undefeated for the season. Dishner also had an assist for the Patriots, as did DeAnne Jackson. Pinecrest’s Jillian Murray started her first game in goal.
Tonight, the Patriots (5-1) travel to Lumberton for a 7 p.m. non-conference match. A junior-varsity contest is scheduled for 5:30.
