An overtime goal by John Kropp has advanced the Pinecrest boys to the third round of the state 4-A soccer playoffs. The Patriots and Pine Forest had played for 97 minutes Saturday night when Matt Carriker carried the ball down the right side of the field. He cut into the Trojan penalty box and unloaded a shot that was knocked down by the goalkeeper. Kropp stepped into the loose ball and put it in the net for a 1-0 Patriot lead. The home team avoided one last Trojan threat before time ran out in the second overtime period. Under pressure throughout, the visitors defended their goal gallantly. The Patriots finished with a 32 to seven advantage in shots and a 14 to three edge in corner kicks. The No. 1 seeded Patriots from the Mid-Southeastern Conference also went into overtime periods to defeat West Johnson 3-1 on Wednesday in first-round playoff game. The next opponent for Pinecrest (19-2-3) is Wilmington Ashley (15-4-3), the second seed from the Mideastern Conference. Ashley defeated Terry Sanford 4-3 in overtime, also on Saturday. The two teams will meet at Pinecrest on Wednesday. <-Previous 10-29-08 vs West Johnston (Second Round, State Tourn. W, 3-1) 11-5-08 vs #14 Ashley (Third Round, State Tourn. W, 1-0) Next-> |
